Tanım

The Arc Agency, Fair Weather Records, WRTC, and City Ablaze present:

The Kids Are Alright: A benefit for the Bastos Family and The Tommy Fund

This show was originally meant to serve as sort of a release show for a compilation album that Fair Weather Records recently released called The Kids Are Alright. The plan was to get at least a couple of bands off the comp to do a show and donate all the proceeds to The Tommy Fund, which is the charity that this compilation is based around. We were well into planning this out when something came up.

My friend Kayla announced that her 16 year old brother had just been diagnosed with T-Cell Leukemia and that she would be planning a benefit show to help her family cover the medical costs because they were already in a tight spot to begin with. I wanted to help somehow and thought it made sense to combine efforts since both causes are very closely related, so we did just that.

Admission is a minimum donation of $8, but you are more than welcome to donate as much as you'd like. 100% of proceeds from this show will be going straight to the two causes.

The lineup is as follows:

TIGERS JAW
Tigers Jaw’s penetrating melodies remain more contagious than an airborne virus and the harmonies give us those sweet, sweet roller coaster highs. The buzz of the guitars sets our blood boiling, the rhythm section pounds a hypnotic beat through our skulls and the familiar warmth of the keys wash over Spirit Desire in waves of fuzzy sound. Still, none of it would sound so memorable without the band’s subtle restraint and its ability to create tension and excitement in such a short amount of time. The songs on this 7-inch never pull their punches – they just keep you guessing when and where that knockout uppercut will land. Maybe the reason why Tigers Jaw impresses me so much is not for the qualities it shares with the previously mentioned touchstones but rather for the way it circumvents conventional notions of indie, pop and and punk while still keeping the proceedings high-energy, instantly engaging and a just little bit raw. It’s a skewed yet timeless approach to songwriting that makes the anticipation of whatever they do next that much more intense.

END OF A YEAR SELF DEFENSE FAMILY
Your favorite band’s favorite band, Cohoes New York’s End of a Year Self Defense Family enjoys a distinct renown within the punk community. Well-respected and critically lauded but difficult and idiosyncratic, the band has done things their way almost to a fault. Eschewing sing-alongs and easy anthems in favor of personal lyrics, End of a Year Self Defense Family stands apart from their contemporaries in punk and hardcore. Their strangely tense guitar-work framed within otherwise hook laden songs lends the band an unmistakable sound. Opting to be heavy in emotional rather than heavy in sound.

After first gaining attention through a full-length on seminal hardcore label Revelation Records, End of a Year Self Defense Family took to the 7”EP format with a rare zeal. The result was EP’s and splits from a dozen labels in half-a-dozen countries. Genuinely uninterested in genres and expectations, End of a Year Self Defense Family released these records on a wide variety of labels while touring the world over.

Building on the post everything sound they’ve continued to pioneer, End of a Year Self Defense Family returns to the full-length format with boundless creative energy. “You Are Beneath Me” is the band’s most focused work to date. Expanding greatly on the recent 7″EP material they’ve built their name on. Dense and anxiety-ridden, “You Are Beneath Me” approaches punk in a hyper-personal and singularly artistic manner. Not afraid to be confrontational, honest, and pure in every way. Proving that End of a Year Self Defense Family continue to be a true breath of fresh air in today’s independent music world.
