John Peel Night 2009

Pull Yourself Together are proud to present a wealth of musical entertainment to celebrate the life of John Peel. It is now coming up to five years since John tragically passed away and PYT strongly feel that gone does not mean forgotten. To this end we are organising this one-off special event featuring a diverse line-up of bands small and large, local and national, including a variety of acts whose musical lives have been enriched in some way by John, be that a Peel Session or simply finding inspiration in his shows…

Featuring live sets from

Malcolm Middleton – As part of Arab Strap Malcolm recorded four Peel Sessions and has since gone on to solo success of his own. His most recent LP Waxing Gibbous has been said to ‘keep the gloom flowing’ from his previous solo releases, though it is a ‘good robust Scottish gloom, served with a chaser of wry humour.’ We think that is a good review, but you never can tell.

Sky Larkin – One of our favourite bands, who fully sum up the energy and raw indie pop roots of listening to a Peel show for us. Their debut record The Golden Spike was recorded with John Goodmanson and has rightly earned the band heaps of praise. This date is one of the last on their current UK tour before continuing their assault on America later this year.

The Loves – Another John Peel favourite, The Loves recorded four Peel Sessions, including one on Valentine’s Day at Peel Acres where they ate heart shaped pizzas. The band have a track featured on the upcoming compilation Kats Karavan – The History of the John Peel Show.

Sweet Baboo – Sweet Baboo has been quietly building a reputation with his darkly comical brand of bittersweet, acoustic alt country. It has drawn admiring glances from everyone from Mark Riley and Tom Robinson to Daniel Johnston who asked him to back him up on the Cardiff leg of his European tour. His latest album Hello Wave was released in August 2009.

As if that wasn’t enough we are also delighted that Marc Riley, who has helped to curate the evening, will be on hand as the compére beyond compare and to play a few DJ sets throughout the night. Marc had this to say “I believe I was involved in the 1st 'Tribute to John Peel' gig soon after John’s death…and am touched to be invited to continue that support. My relationship with John existed on several different levels. He was a supporter of the bands I’d been in… he then became a colleague at Radio 1… and eventually – I feel honoured to say – a friend.
John Peel Day is not only a celebration of John’s life – but also of great music, whilst raising money for worthy causes… what more could you ask for”

All proceeds from the night will be split between Diabetes UK and the Musicians Benevolent Fund, raising money for charities which John would have cared about.
