    Fine Fender Rhodes Tunes

    JazzFanatics
I've got a special love for Fender Rhodes pianoes. The sound and the tone is just perfect.
I've got a piano myself but I'm way behind players like Hancock, Jan Hammer and Zawinul. They've always amazed me the most.
Now I'm wondering if there is any other pianists I've missed or CD's I've forgotten to listen to. Any Fender Rhodes favourites?
I can easily say that Hancock's "Return of the Headhunters" and Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" (especially Jan Hammer's extraordinary solo on Red Baron) is classic masterpieces.
    Right!?

Check out 'Einar', the artist. And listen to his songs!

    Hi

-> Checkout Clare Fischer's 'Latin Patterns' (I think it's a compilation) -- very nice Rhodes sounds, if you like latin stuff.

-> There is a great intro by Joe Sample on 'Scratch' from The Crusaders. He plays the warm sounding suitcase model -- probably a Mark I.

Maybe some more will cross my mind...

    Greetings,
    hupf

I really like the album 'from left to right' from Bill Evans where he plays both piano and Fender Rhodes at the same time !

we have one at home but it's years since my father played it!
I really wanna learn how to play it! I know some songs
of Chick Corea, were he used the Fender, and it't gorgeous!

    Check The Philadelphia Experiment

On the album The Philadelphia Experiment, Christian McBride shows he knows how to play the electric bass and is acoompanied by Uri Caine who plays almost all the time on a Fender Rhodes. Really groovy record!

    Check out Return to Forever

It was Chick Corea's old group in the 70s. You should definitely check out Light as a Feather (the deluxe edition if you can find it).

  • I also own a Fender Rhodes (a mark I stage model), I love playing it. Most of the recommendations here are good. One of my other favorite Rhodes players is George Duke when he was playing with Cannonball Adderley and Frank Zappa (don't like his solo stuff all that much, though).

I second the recommendation of Uri Caine, he kicks major ass on the Rhodes (check out his playing on the "Bedrock" album, or with Dave Douglas). Another kick-ass electric piano album is a compilation called the "Funkiest band you've never heard" by an semi-obscure 70s fusion outfit called "Catalyst". I don't know the name of their keys player, but he smokes.

If you like progrock as well as jazzrock, also check out two bands from the 70s called Hatfield and the North and National Health, killer playing on their albums.

Joe Sample of the Crusaders is just amazing, I can't believe how underrated this band is -maybe because they're way too melodic&catchy?! Also I love Herbie Hancock's "Mr. Hands": astounding fender rhodes + slap bass, although purists might find the record a bit disco-influenced.

There some really great tracks that feature Dave Kikoski on the rhodes on Ingrid Jensen's album "Higher Grounds".

  • Fender Rhodes Tag Recommendations?

    Hi folks!

I just renewed my interest in fender rhodes sounds when I rediscovered Light as a Feather. I wanted to tag the tracks and wondered what would be the best tag to use.
I found , and but none of them seem to be in widespread use.

It would be great if people would start tagging their favourite fender rhodes tracks and artists to share their recommendations.

Any suggestions for a descriptive tag?

  • Just for the record, I started to use the tag as it is more specific than and used more often than .

  • deep fender rhodes

Joe Sample plays Rhodes really nice.

Joe Sample plays Rhodes a lot in his solo abums and in those of the Crusaders. A Rainy Day in Monterey is a good example.
