  If you like darker stuff, like deathrock, post-punk, goth-rock, neofolk, dark ambient, or industrial, there is now a group here on last.fm, called FREE DARK MUSIC, with tons of connected artists within these genres who upload and share their tracks for free. And if you don't like those genres, the group is there anyway.

  if you oppose the RIAA, simply do not buy or download music by artists who are supported by the RIAA. better yet, don't buy any music. eventually the industry will collapse and the only music left will be made by artists who have no interest in profit. there are thousands of artists currently that release music for free under the (already mentioned) creative commons license. see some of the most recent releases here: http://www.phlow.de/netlabels/index.php/New_Netlabel_Releases

  A lot of artists spread their music for free. Instead of downloading huge amounts of tracks from P2P, just support Creative Commons musicians. :)

  The reign of the RIAA extortionists is coming to an end soon now that Harvard Law School professor Charles Nesson has stopped waiting for the RIAA to go after a harvard student and has taken up the case of a Boston College student.   Also, some majors (RIAA friends, evil) were taking on "off" artists taking risks because they could afford it - one-hit wonders were the safety and pretty much paid for those acts who needed time to build up the fan base as all "unusual" music does. See Radiohead who are somehow the hymn of the anti-RIAA. Those began with EMI - go to the list of the enemies. Would they get to where they are without EMI? Try to seriously think where everybody knows Radiohead from.

  Not giving you my oppinion, just the facts: 1. The fans love the indie (not RIAA) artist, they share and promote its music via p2p, IM and so forth; 2. The artist sells less, gains less, has less to spend in studio; 3. The next album, if it is to be made at all, is made in a week (recording, mix, mastering); 3. The quality is, to say the least, low, the fans are disappointed, pretty much ditch the artist; 4. Artist's label drops the artist / Indie label is no longer viable - no money / Self-produced artist has fallen into oblivion; 5. Majors release another batch of clones the non-protesting mass simply buy paying the RIAA blooduckers, the revolted anti-RIAA folks won't consume such music (or won't they?); 6. Majors are taking even less risks taking on new projects and go with the well-established scheme: tested artists, tested recording studios. In the end indie artists, labels and recording studios close down, majors always find a way, people hate RIAA listening to Franz Ferdinand ;)
