I finally saw The Big Lebowski the other night. I thought John Goodman and Steve Buscemi were hilarious, but overall the movie was a little bit of a let down for me. I guess I was expecting a little more considering how often people shit themselves over it.

I agtee with you on that one...I, sadly, get bored watching that movie.

Meh, I love Barton Fink and Fargo more than The Big Lebowski.

Barton Fink was a little weird for me, but I agree with Fargo... much better than the Big Lebowski. Maybe not quite as funny, but one of the finest films of the 90s.

Fargo... now that was a great film.
I haven't seen either Barton Fink or The Big Lebowski. They are both "to see" movies.

  • My top 3 favorite movies would probably be American Beauty, Amelie, and Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice.

If you've never heard of the last one, look into it. It's about the wave of pseudo-sexual permissiveness in the late 60's. Natalie Wood is stunning and brilliant. It's also absolutely hilarious.

  • My 3 favourite movies of all time would be Goodfellas, Dr Strangelove and my overall favourite, The Wizard of Oz.

I just saw White Water Summer with Kevin Bacon and Sean Astin. 80s zaniness at its finest!

I'm still to see Dr Strangelove... My mumma says it's boring.. All my friends recommend it though. I don't think my mums a kubrick fan outside of the shining anyway.

    Thread Revival!

OK, so the Bob Dylan documentary Dont Look Back has been one of my favorite movies since I saw it a few years back and I recently saw it again and it was still amazing.
Then, with my new Netflix account, I got "I am Trying to Break Your Heart", which is the story of Wilco making Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It's a good mix of performances and the tensions in a band and it really shows how combustible bands can be when working on an album.
But anywho, the point is, I really liked these movies for giving me perspective on artists beyond just their music. It's great to see Bob Dylan acting like a giant dickhole to the press and the fans who freaked when he went electric. It's also great to see the human side of Jeff Tweedy when his son is crying because the Claw Machine stole his quarter. So Elitists, do you know of any other documentarys filmed in this style? Let me know, I wish there were more movies like these but obviously it would be tough to get access to the artists granted, especially as much as both filmmakers seem to enjoy.

I didn't like I Am Trying to Break Your Heart as a straight up documentary, just because there was no driving force behind the events in the film. People explain what's happening to you instead of you actually seeing the events occur. That being said, it's a great document of Wilco with some fantastic live performances. I guess what I mean to say is that as a Wilco fan, I loved it, but as a movie fan, I didn't really dig it that much.

Two movies you should check out Graham: Dig! (documents Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols, and may be one of the best documentaries in general that I have seen) and Gimme Shelter, a document of the Rolling Stones at Altamont (where the Hell's Angels who'd been hired for security killed people).

Two more recent music documentaries I've loved are The Devil and Daniel Johnston (about Daniel Johnston obviously) and We Jam Econo, a very fine film about The Minutemen. The We Jam Econo DVD has some outstanding live footage as extras, just real quality stuff.

While we're on the topic of documentaries, I just watched Scared Straight. Prisoners threatening to rape 15-year-olds back in the 70s? Good times!

Man, that new Spiderman movie is pretty lame. Too much stuff going on - if I had gone to get popcorn in the middle of it, I'd have been screwed.

I actually thought it was the best of the bunch so far. If nothing else, it was incredibly funny (i.e. the French restaurant, the Jazz club, Peter Parker being the most emo person EVER haha). Anywho, I liked it.

that movie sucked some big balls.

i laughed aloud at some of the questionable choices bruckheimer made...for instance: american flag draped patriotically behind spidey during his triumphant return?? fuck that. if i wanted faggotry i would go rent The Beastmaster...at least he could talk to animals for christsake. all spiderman seems to be able to do is cry and gyrate his hips like a complete bag-o-douche.

i think he should have stuck with the hot blonde

  • "Crumb" is the best documentary I've seen probably. "The Times of Harvey Milk" is really good too.

Barton Fink is the best Coen film, by a margin. Well Fargo is pretty close. But those two are heads above the rest.

Christ. Can I just express how terrible American Beauty is?

But the best movies I've seen recently are...
    Advise and Consent
    Swoon
    All That Jazz
    Inland Empire
The Fly- Cronenberg is really one of the best filmmakers of the day.
    Seconds
    Point Blank
    Targets
Little Children- jesus christ, this is one of the very best films of 06, see it now.
Silverlake Life: The View from Here- one of the saddest films I've seen.
    Parting Glances

    Good stuff...

    Everything goes to hell anyway..."

Point Blank had some great moments overall, really great, but the movie just didn't add up for me.

And I really hated Crumb. I found Crumb himself to be extremely uninteresting, and the only parts that ended up getting my attention were the focus on the brother. I definitely know I'm in the minority on that, though, as it seems everybody and their cousin who has seen Crumb has loved it. I've probably already said it, but Hoop Dreams is my favorite documentary of all time.

American Beauty wasn't terrible, but I've seen better midlife crisis movies. Like The Weatherman with Nicholas Cage, that was a great movie.

The Fly is a fantastic movie that I revisited about a year ago. Cronenberg is good, though some of his movies (Videodrome and Naked Lunch) left bad feelings in my stomach.

    spiderman sucked big balls
that whole middle part with the emo thing and whatnot, I could tell it was supposed to be intentionally funny but it came off realy bad and even it started just being unintentionally funny and from there the movie was ruined. anything that happened, from dialogue that we normally wouldve heard as passable became horrible and different visual things became ridiculous, such as when the huge sandman hand falls or the aforementioned USA Flag. It also didn't help that we had one of those guys behind us who yelled completely obvious things at the movie.

Example: The sandman is attacking spiderman and then you see Harry swoop in on his glider and throws a grenade. The grenade gets lodged in the sandmans neck and you can hear it start beeping down to explosion. The guy behind feels the need to yell "UH BUH BYE!" at the screen. it was admittedly pretty hilarious but it didn't help the movie.

That being said, the CGI stuff was amazing, except for Venoms talking, which just looked weird. And I will still line up to see spiderman 4-6, what can I say, I'm a sucker.
