  • Overlooked Albums of Genius #3 - Second Ring

    22 Oca 2009, 23:41 yazan soulfinger

Okay, folks break out your meal money for this one. The first two albums in my series of journals weren't classics from start to finish but were worth owning...

THIS album however is a bonafied, genuine, certified classic from the first second to the last note. Canadian funk fusion band Moses Mayes turns out a masterpiece with this one as they expand their sound to include the services of vocalists unlike their 2004 LP Needle to the Groove (another classic).

The album does divide itself into two pretty distinct but highly gelled halves. Either the song is a beautiful excursion into full-blown funk fusion or it delivers a dance floor killer. All the while they include ingenious turn table scratches that add a signature sound to the Moses groove.

On the Lonnie Liston Smith and The Brand New Heavies side of things we have extended gems like Space and Time (Elevate), ÇalRemind and ÇalIntrafusion. As mentioned earlier, the grooves are always strong but every song has constant shifts in the musical performance that keep things interesting and let you that this is the work of a band and not the work of computerized program. Plus ÇalCause I Just Hav'ta gives you a good ol' 70s party vibe as the band's name is chanted over some pretty bossy horns which then eases on up for some elastic bass lines that would make Larry Graham jealous. Okay, maybe not jealous but he would dig it.

The vocalists are utilised on the outstanding ÇalTell Me, ÇalElevate and ÇalBeing. The first two of those songs would be massive club/radio hits if there were any justice in the world, but life just ain't fair dammit.

Well, ignorance is no longer an excuse for you dear reader. Get on up and youtube Moses Mayes to find some of their live perforances and check out their free tracks here on last.fm.

  • Overlooked Albums of Genius #1 - Moving Violation

    12 Oca 2009, 02:37 yazan soulfinger

NOTE: Since I've some spare time, I've decided to disclose some pretty good albums that seem to have been lost to the dust bins of history...

For the first installment of this series, I bring to the light Moving Violation by The Jackson 5 (Last.fm has the tracks listed under the two-for-one cd Dancing Machine/Moving Violation). The album, upon its release, charted #6 R&B and #36 Pop in 1975.

This album is notable because a) it is the last one by the Jackson 5 for Motown and the last before they changed their name to The Jacksons, precipitated by Motown's legal actions against J5 and b) the full on disco-funk explosion that marked their later with Epic and Philly International comes to the fore here augmented by a few ballads to slow the pace a tad.

    Cream of the Crop

ÇalForever Came Today kicks the album off right with MJ handling most of the lead vocals with worthy help from Jermaine. The song, originally done by The Supremes, is slightly marred by cheesy, over the top backing vocals chanting "forever and ever" but when they hush up and let the Jacksons handle the vocals and let the bass take control, this song is not to be taken lightly on the dance floor proven by its status as a #1 Disco and #1 Club Play single (backed with "Body Language"). Radio play was harder to come by as it reached a more-than-respectable #6 on the R&B singles chart but only managed a #60 showing on the pop side of things.

Honey Love slows the pace just a tad and is notable for the impressive emphasis on group harmonies as Michael gets nary a second of solo time that isn't augmented by the other group members. The lyrics aren't too thought-provoking as they implore a woman with that sweet sweet honey love to dance.

Body Language (Do The Love Dance), as previously mentioned, was a #1 Club Play hit coupled with "Forever Came Today" and that distinction is darn well worthy. The funkiest track on the album features an excellent breakdown mid-song, a bass line that calls out for some popping and locking, and stellar clavinet work throughout.

All I Do Is Think Of You is the best of the album's slower tracks as the boys describe their high school crush on some vixen who has them thinking all day long about her. A serious nod to Philly Soul (although it lacks the more impressive orchestration in favor of a more minimalist approach). This one only hit #16 R&B but would later be revived by R&B vocal quintet Troop in 1990 for a smash #1 R&B hit. Both versions are worthy seeking out.

As far as filler goes, this is pretty good!
Moving Violation is more mid-tempo dance floor fun, while Çal(You Were Made) Especially for Me could easily have found itself on a contemporary The O'Jays album. ÇalBreezy rounds out the more mellow numbers as it takes you an easy ride. It's pleasing while listened to, but easily forgotten afterward. ÇalCall Of The Wild and Time Explosion are reminiscent of Undisputed Truth's latter-era funk jams. Not throw aways by any means, but it does seem weird to hear the J5 in a psychedelic-funk workout.

Not the best Jackson 5 album, but it deserves some playing time and not a single track makes you want to hit the skip button since "Time Explosion" is the last track and you can just hit the stop button.

  • 100 Favorite Albums (That I Own)

    19 Mar 2008, 07:27 yazan soulfinger

In an effort to kill time while I waste away working the graveyard shift, I've decided to list my 100 favorite albums.

    DISCLAIMERS
    1) The list was made only out of albums I own
    2) These are MY FAVORITE albums, not the best ever
    3) Some artists were allowed only 2 or 3 albums so as to give the list more variety. Sorry Isleys and Zep.

    1980s: 6 / 1990s: 5 / 2000s: 6

    10 Şub 2008, 04:47 yazan TMoor

A new Last.fm friend recently asked me my favorite songs of all time. I can't compile a list that narrow, but it did get me to thinking about the music I've listened to over the years.

Like the first song I remember hearing: "Hit the Road Jack" by Ray Charles. I was 3.

The first song I ever learned, my older brother taught me:

    It's a me
    It's a me Oh Lord
Standin' in the need of prayer

I grew up on Top 40 radio and remember first paying attention to rotation with "Another Saturday Night" by Sam Cooke. The concept of "crossover" music was years away for me.

One year my older sister came back from summer vacation with a stack of albums that I quickly appropriated. Artists like Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Friends of Distinction, Junior Walker & the All-Stars. She also had a coupla things I just couldn't get with: A mopped female vocal quartet called The Beatle Buddies and a female country singer. All I remember about her was a cover of Bobbie Gentry's "Ode To Billie Joe." And then there were the two albums that I eventually would wear out by the newly renamed Diana Ross & The Supremes: "Reflections" and "Love Child" -- which began my fascination with the group and its troubling lead singer. Especially the latter collection and specifically the title tune. It answered important questions in my life that I didn't know how to pose at the time. And it was the first time a song's lyrics ever resonated with me.

I started my own music collection (of 45 singles) with the 90-cent purchase of Laura Lee's "Women's Love Rights."

I was in junior high school when I was exposed to "Black radio." In heavy rotation at the time were gems such as "Master of Eyes (The Deepness of Your Eyes)" by Aretha Franklin, "Midnight Train to Georgia" by Gladys Knight & The Pips, "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye.

The first album I ever bought was "Rags to Rufus" by Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan.

I was a college freshman studying in my dorm room. Normally I liked to study by the school (or one of the city) radio station's quiet-storm airings. This particular day one show ended and another began. No segue, no anouncement -- just a sensual jazz guitar intro and even more sensual vocals: "You're so late getting home from the office./Did you miss your train?/Were you caught in the rain?" Nancy Wilson's "Guess Who I Saw Today" was my introduction to jazz. Years before, I'd seen Sarah Vaughan on a TV talk show. I didn't know who she was. The host made a big deal over the guest as did my mother. I wasn't impressed. Frankly, I thought she sounded like a man. It wasn't until college that I heard "Key Largo" and "Gloomy Sunday" and fell in love with that voice. My quote for years had been: Nancy Wilson turned me on to jazz, but Sarah Vaughan turned me out.

Later on during my college years -- while I was seriously feelin' Patti LaBelle, Patti Austin, Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, Roberta Flack, Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, The Emotions and, of course, Aretha Franklin -- a friend lent me an album cassette called "You Know How to Love Me," beginning a lifelong love affair with Phyllis Hyman.

Sometime in the early '90s, I found that I'd begun liking fewer and fewer of the top Billboard titles until finally I recognized practically none. Ultimately I wound up a devotee of Grown Folks' music, largely smooth- jazz vocalists and instrumentalists. Some of the young'uns today consistently act like they got some musical sense: India.Arie, Chanté Moore, John Legend, Corinne Bailey Rae, Melinda Doolittle. And Janet Jackson. And despite everything, evenWhitney Houston, too. But especially India.Arie.

At this point in my life, the music's gotta seriously come right or not at all.

  • [Vinyl Fetish] The Supremes A' Go-Go & Lamont Dozier

    13 Mar 2007, 20:15 yazan IanAR

I love this album - Supremes A' Go-Go! It's one of those treasured vinyl records I inherited, from my dad. Since Motown/Universal have not seen fit to detail this great album, I'll do so here.

    Tracks - Side One
    1. Love Is Like an Itching in My Heart (Brian Holland/Lamont Dozier/Edward Holland, Jr)
    2. This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You) (Holland-Dozier-Holland, Sylvia Moy)
    3. ÇalYou Can't Hurry Love (Holland-Dozier-Holland)
    4. Shake Me, Wake Me (When It's Over) (Holland-Dozier-Holland)
    5. Baby I Need Your Loving (Holland-Dozier-Holland)
    6. These Boots Are Made For Walkin' (Lee Hazlewood)

    Tracks - Side Two
    1. I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) (Holland-Dozier-Holland)
    2. Get Ready (Smokey Robinson)
    3. Put Yourself in My Place (Holland-Dozier-Holland, John Thornton)
    4. Money (That's What I Want) (Berry Gordy, Jr., Janie Bradford)
    5. Come and Get These Memories (Holland-Dozier-Holland)
    6. Hang on Sloopy (Wes Farrell, Bert Russell)

    Personnel
    • Diana Ross: lead vocals
Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson: background vocals
Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, Hal Davis, Frank Wilson: producers
      The Funk Brothers: instrumentation

    Lamont Dozier

The basic data, above, is sourced from Wikipedia.org and's piquanted my interest in Lamont Dozier! Since the early 80s, and the days on Caister and Bournemouth jazz/soul weekenders*, I've loved the euphoric dancefloor hit: ÇalGoing Back to My Roots. It's near the top of my charts, currently, at #266 in my all-time track chart, i.e. it's getting played more than monthly (pretty good going with someone on my wide-ranging tastes).

Note to self: Must tag more of The Supremes.

    * - Inspired by, likes of: (Dr.) Bob Jones, Chris Bangs, Sean French, Bob Masters & Gilles Peterson.

    - Shake it, but don't break it! Ian MySpace.com/ScrawlAudio
