Headphone problem?

I'll copy the first post, and general problem:

5G 60GB iPod destroys right earphone

Got an iPod in December. Very shiny, very nice.

After a week, the right bud of the earphones Apple provided suddenly died. Slight annoyance, but not a problem; I used my Sony earphones instead.

Ten days later, the right earpiece started to crackle, and proceeded to stop working at all. Rather more annoying, but they were old earphones after all.

Bought myself a shiny new pair of £30 ambient-noise-reducing earphones with the vaguely surgical-seeming rubber ear pieces. Barely five days had passed when, yes, the right-hand half of the new headphones failed between one track and the next.

Now, they say that once is happenstance, twice is coincidence and three times is enemy action, so... anyone else suffered/heard of this problem? Apple were singularly unforthcoming when I phoned then, but did at least offer a free pair of bog-standard earphones (for my iPod to consume, no doubt)

Now I'm thinking of buying an iPod, but with $400 Bose headphones, I'm wondering if I should risk it. Has anyone had a problem at all like this? There are 11 pages of posts on that website from people with that problem..

I haven't heard anything like that. I never used the standard Apple headphones and just used my $10 headphones from Wal-Mart. And I haven't had a problem.

  • I havent had any problems. If you dont want to risk runing your headphones, either make sure that the sound check is off on the iPod, and that the volume adjustment is set to 0% on your songs within your library. You could just keep the volume down on your iPod, but i wouldnt worry, if your worried about wrecking your headphones, then test your iPod with a cheap pair first.

Thats so weird. I actually have been having a similar problem for over a month now. Instead of just cutting out, the right ear crackles and goes in and out occasionally. But it never stays out and its always random. I wonder why its always the right ear. Sorry I'm not much help, but I just thought I'd let you know that you're not the only one. Best of luck!

Three pairs have done this now.. sigh..

I have had three different pairs of earbuds lose sound in the right side only. Two pairs were ipod branded, and one sony. No I am not sure what I am going to do. I do not want to buy any more headphones if they are going to go out after a few months.

A friend of mine has that problem with her 2nd Gen 4GB Nano, except it's the left side that goes instead of the right. I didn't think that other people had a similar problem.

    or you can by phillips

  • I have the same problem!

I had been using a mediocre-ish pair of Sony earphones with my ipod (5th gen, about 3 years old now) for probably a year, then about 2 months ago, the right side of my earphones stopped working. I thought oh it must just be the earphones. I continued using it for about 2 more weeks (with the ipod only) before the left side also stopped working. (Note that the earphones themselves were permanently damaged, I tried them with other devices and again only the left side worked (initially), and then later the left side also died.) So I dumped it.

Then I bought a cheap pair of no-brand earphones (4 euros), and within 10 days of use (with the ipod only), the right side stopped working. Then a day or two later the left side also stopped working. (Again, the earphones themselves were not working anymore. Tested with other devices.) So I thought, argh what a junk pair of made-in-China earphones. Dumped it.

Then over the past week, I had been using a pair of good JVC headphones (albeit about 4 years old now) with my ipod. Just moments ago the right side died (it faded in and out of silence before being completely dead now) while I was listening to my iPod. Again, tested with other devices, and yes it seems like the right side of my JVC headphones are now permanently dead (as with the other two pairs of earphones)
(Incidentally I had been using these headphones on and off with this same ipod over the previous year without anything going wrong.)

So it would appear that my iPod is somehow killing my ear/headphones? Is this possible? Any solutions?

Ive went through so many pairs of ipod earphones they always break after a few weeks but they are the only ones I really like so I just keep buying them at €20 a pop!

    happened to me too...

i wanted an ipod but couldnt afford it, so i bought a non-brand £30 japanese one. it works really well apart from that ive realised one of the earphones breaks, then the other sometimes goes altogether as well!
i thought it was because i buy cheap ones and they cant take being bashed around in my bag, but they always have the same problem... the right one is always louder than the left, then the right goes altogether...
if someone could help it would be great! i cant afford to keep buying more earphones, even from pound shops because the price does add up. i think the problem is with my mp3 personally but not sure if its the same for anyone else. i never had this problem before! its annoying because most of my songs have panning and i cant hear the vocal track :(
