    Best genesis album?

I just found "I can't Dance" lying around, and fell in love with the group. Is there an ultimate best album by this group? a pinnacle of their musical genius? I'm trying to find one to get...

    thanks,
    Umi

Check out the favourite album thread, where we voted for a longer time for the best album. Of course, it's the opinion of those who took the effort and checked in every day. If you ask around, you'll probably get every album named as answer to your question - earlier or later.
I personally feel that Foxtrot and Selling England By The Pound are the best albums, but basically, all are very good. :-)

    Dr. Martinus -
Join the group True Genesis - we have a lot of fun there ... :-)

If you really want to get a good overview of the band, I would suggest the Platinum Collection. It has songs from just about every studio recorded album Genesis released. However, the collection is mostly stuff from the Phil Collins era of Genesis, but that was a 20 year span as opposed to Peter Gabriel's 6 years and Ray Wilson's 1 year, so it makes sense. So, try that, you should get a pretty good idea of what Genesis is like and what era you like best.

If you liked I Can't Dance you'd probably enjoy the rock years of the group more than the Invisible Touch/We Can't Dance years. Get Abacab.

Get into Gabriel albums if you like Abacab.

Nah its "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", of course. Phil once said that this is his favourite one because it's so full of music and i totally agree ;)
You can listen to it a hundred times and you will still find parts that you didn't notice before (btw it's the same with the lyrics: read them a hundred times and you still won't understand them ;)).

You gotta get in to get out...

my favorite at the time is caught between foxtrot and selling england. Lamb is good, i've listened to it through a few times, but near the end of the album it can get sorta boring for me

Selling England by the pound is the best album; this album has great songs, an excellent quality, etc... Foxtrot has the best Genesis song(Supper's Ready). The lamb lies down on Broadway has the best concept.

    Best pop album: Invisible Touch
(contains only pop-hits except one good song called Dominoes and one instrumental song called The Brazilian)

Best progrock album: artist=Genesis]Selling England by the Pound[/album] and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway are the two albums that usually come up with a tie. The lamb.. has its plus becouse of the bizarr concept that's kind of is interesting to look in to.
Selling England.. in my opinion has better material.

Then there is the album which became Genesis commersial breaktrough
    Duke

Trespass, absolutely. All the songs are perfect, except Stagnation. Trespass is really nice name and it contains the best song from Genesis, White Mountain. <3

To me it's Selling England By The Pound and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

  • Hmmm, that question is too tough for me, but I'll take a shot! With Peter as frontman, I think it would be a toss up between Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme.....and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. With Phil, my favorites are Wind and Wuthering, and Trick of the Tail.
If you liked "I Can't Dance", you may not like the earlier material. They are two completely different groups. OK, that's just my opinion ;)

    The golden age

The golden age albums: Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

Phill Collins in this period was an incredible drumer. He had a similar level that Bill Bruford, for example.

Peter Gabriel is one of the best singers in that period.

Steve Hacket had an incredible period. Just listen Firth of Firth.

Tony Banks was an excellent period, and he was (I think) the main music creator in Genesis. A king in the mellotron.

The best period of Mike Rutherford, better than Mike and the Mechanics (jajaja)
