• Étoile - world & symphonic progressive meets kraut rock - is out!

    6 Tem 2009, 18:19 yazan Hoxerijo

Fourth release by Hox Vox, it's a concept album about stars - both intended as prima ballerinas and cosmic bodies - and their issues.

Genre is a series of various kind of mix with world music, symphonic progressive, a bit of contemporary and kraut electronics, always with the free approach of Rock in Opposition tradition (from Zappa to Henry Cow): sometime resulting in complex structures with mindbending pairings of melodies with subtle detuned arrangments. Record start with a Residents-like intro sung by a couple of real pigs, then a piece of math/art rock, sounding like a too dry death metal. Then from Rhythmbox the record starts wedging prog, contemporary, world and electronics.

Record is available here at Last.FM

You can also download it from Hox Vox HQ website, a single zip archive with the 13 songs and booklet.

The record as usual is free to listen, download and spread, as it's released with a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Unported License.

    Enjoy.

  • Stevie's Dear Disco?

    3 Tem 2009, 11:09 yazan IanAR

I stumbled upon My Dear Disco's ÇalWhite Lies today, which showed enough potential to skim their 2008 album - Dancethink LP.

Then I noticed that track four - a Stevie Wonder cover, ÇalAll I Do - is a ' free download' (0c download). Now, the album's a DIY release (i.e. not from a label we might expect to have any special leverage on ÇalAll I Do), so how are they in a position to give away copies / plays of the song?

It seems like either: My Dear Disco have very deep pockets, Stevie's been kind enough to forgo royalties* or some lawyers are waiting for My Dear Disco to get very deep pockets (so they can empty them). If the band aim to get picked-up by a major and it's anything like the last option, despite what looks like some quite hefty PR, I wonder how such a liability would compromise due diligence in a label signing.

    * - Clarence Paul & morris Broadnax are also credited for the song's lyrics.

I'm not down-on My Dear Disco, to my ears they have good potential, but this looked like an odd use of a song and I've failed to find it written about elsewhere. If you know more about this release or have other ideas about the usage / licensing, please comment.

    Format: File, MP3, 320k

    Track List:

Williams Park is in St. Petersburg, Florida, United States. It is the city's first park and encompasses an entire city block between 4th and 3rd Streets North and between 2nd and 1st Avenues North. Founded in 1888 and originally named "City Park," it was changed to Williams Park in honor of the founder of St. Petersburg, John Constantine Williams Sr.

The park is the center of the downtown business district and has been the venue for numerous political and civic rallies and celebrations for more than one hundred years. In 1964, Richard Nixon used the bandstand to speak to a large group gathered in the park on behalf of then presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. Many downtown workers flock to the park in good weather for picnics during their lunch breaks. At one time, the park was surrounded by prestigious department and retail stores. In the past 25 years, most of them have moved away to malls and other areas away from the city center. The bandstand plays a prominent role in the park and one has been there since 1894.

The bandstand is still used for many outdoor concerts during the noon hour and on weekends, but for groups which tend to attract smaller crowds.

The park is also a haven to the city's homeless population.

    05. ÇalChemodulator 5
    06. ÇalChemodulator 6

Siegmar Fricke started his first musical experiments in 1981 using tape-recorders and shortwave-radio signals to create collages of musique-concrète. After intense activities in the European tape-scene between 1985 and 1993 he founded the project Efficient Refineries together with Miguel A. Ruiz from Madrid who is already active in the Spanish electronic scene since the 80s. Further CD-collaborations and reworkings with the Italian sound-artist Maurizio Bianchi were realized. Siegmar Fricke released many net-albums all around the world with studies of clinical soundscapes ("Pharmakustik").All full-length CD entitled "Subdural Space" in high-quality digisleeve has been released on the Japanese label KUBITSURI TAPES in October 2008.

Chemodulator comprises the sum of innovative experiences resulting from daily explorations and research in pharmakustik sound-symbiosis. The machinistic fluidity of rusty analogue frequencies melting with dismembered rhythmical particles and unvoiced robotix forms completely new organic tissues of constantly permutating electron-transfer. CHEMODULATOR is the forceful electrolytic answer to the border areas of increativity and commercial corrosion.

    Release info:

Words by Thierry Massard @ noCo...mment:

Try to catch a protean asteroid, try to classify a acceleration place out of the box!

For sure, that bypass is impalpable...a shimmering surprise coordinated by an alchemist without blinkers. The nines...not the exception that proves hypothetical rules, enthusiastic, enterprising, after 32 notable references, ZhangJW have decided to call together new incomers (except Syndrôm) to be sure to give new avenues of investigation and jump over the trap of the first compilation exercice.

The leap is as graceful and elegant, as the reception carries a multitude of impressions and plurial feelings, without forgetting to mention the humor of some of the guests for their peking host - Alternately, an inspired lethargic dub, a dark blue frantic nostalgia, an unfinished and masterly track, a hit from Moscow or Esa giving us a strange ritournelle as a possible closure, a decoy.

The nine directions of that "S" are multiplied, for sure, but dotted with authentic free electrons in autonomy - particles in emulsion, crystallized for a moment, before a new mad rush, but I digress. Then, what about other assumptions, the classicism of a few times spent through the hills which are becoming more surprising and lyrical, or maybe the quiet and solid dematerialization of soundscapes orchestrated by a Sorin Paun at his best, saved in extremis in a scenographic loop history, a mysterious next door, finally closed by an off voice, on a laconic "bacteria bacteria" previously demonstrated through orientalism by Materia Prima as a high definitive testimony on monitors.

Finally, is it still really necessary to specify that "the nines" is not a nice illustrated catalog...
