    Favourite Covers

I'd be interested to know what are everyones favourite covers of Vans songs. I'll start off with mine.

In 2001 on the night before New Years Eve the Frames played a long late night acoustic session on a radio station in Dublin. It turned out to be an amazing session, the band were on fire, this wasn't long after the death of the great Mic Christopher and as Glen said during the session it had given them a different perspective on life. Anyway they played covers of Into The Mystic and Astral Weeks which were simply beautiful. If you want to try and find a copy of session it's on a bootleg called 'Here Comes The Night'. PM me if you really need a copy and I'll see what I can do.

On the Waterboys tours in 1986 they played one of their early songs called 'The Thrill is Gone' (Not related to the B.B. King song) which they merged into a cover of And The Healing Has Begun. They have also covered Sweet Thing on their album Fishermans Blues. I think Steve Wickhams fiddle playing really adds something special on these covers.

So what interesting covers have you found?

  • I love to hear those.. I haven't heard anybody cover astral weeks. I have heard Into the mystic before though from somebody else but it must not have been good cause I don't remember who did it. Its about near impossible to replace Vans voice.

Jeff Buckley did some beautiful renditions of Vans material in his time.

The cover of The Way Young Lovers Do on the expanded Sin-E was fabulous, though he played it quite often it's my personal favourite, as well as a bootleg of him singing Sweet Thing with a female journalist is wicked too.

"And the healing has begun" by the Water Boys - very Vanesque...

There is also this very bizarre cover of a Japanese Techno band (can't remember the name) covering "Moondance". Very interesting and probably not endorsed by Van ;-)

doors version of gloria is brilliant and seducing ;)

  • er... none that I've ever heard!

They usually bowdlerize his essence to death. But I see I'll have to go and listen to the recommendations, anyway. Now Van's covers is another matter!
