Half way through the year some how, and more new good music than ever. If last year was the year of
The Horrors for me, then this year so far has been the year of
HEALTH, must be a kind of musical chinease new year celebration for me. One of the highlights of this half of the year has to be when I saw
HEALTH for the first time in Leeds, which totally hooked me on their once confusing noise rock which has well and truely made my last 6 months. Other live treats have come from bands such as
Ulterior at the Bodega (Nottingham) whose live show was well up there with
HEALTH's performance but for wholey different reasons. This was a more static affair, with strobe lighting and mist filled room provide the main effects for the bands psychadelic sounds. Other attractions came in the shape of
We Are The Physics,
Lightspeed Champion (both Faversham, Leeds),
Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man and
Operator Please (both Leadmill, Sheffield). The traditional start of summer, came in the shape of the Dot to Dot Festival in Nottingham, where the likes of my new favourites
Iglu & Hartly,
XX Teens,
Hatcham Social and
The Mae Shi improved the weekend event from the short drenched effort of the previous year.
As for Albums, again my band of the moment
HEALTH came up with the goods with two spectacular albums in 6 months, with their remix album being especially pleasing. Along with the noise rockers came
Crystal Castles' self titled album, which came close to beating
HEALTH's efforts. Along with
Crystal Castles came the most anticipated album of these months, "Antidotes" from math-rockers
Foals which was well worth the wait, especially the special edition second CD.
Well what of the next 6 months. Onwards and upwards we go, I say, with Leeds Festival only around the corner, the Transgressive Records tour,
Late of the Pier's debut album and hopefully some more physical releases by the hottest bands around at this moment;
Teengirl Fantasy,
Fryars,
Electricity In Our Homes and
White Lies.
Happy Bi-Annual Celebrations to be shared by all!
