1990’lı yılların en önemli rock/grunge gruplarından biri olan Alice In Chains, 1987 yılında Seattle’da, vokalde Layne Staley, vokal ve gitarda Jerry Cantrell, bas gitarda Mike Starr ve bateride Sean Kinney tarafından kuruldu. Bir çok açıdan 90’lı yılların başında ortaya çıkan heavy metal gruplarından biri olarak kabul edilen Alice In Chains; Van Halen metal’iyle post-punk stilini benimsedi kendine, böylece grup kendine hard rock’la akustik dokunuşların birleştiği nihilist bir sound geliştirdi. Onlar metal fanları için oldukça sert bulunurken şarkı sözlerinde ele aldıkları karanlık konularla Seattle çıkışlı grunge gruplarıyla anılmalarına sebep oldu. Ne var ki yaşanan bu bölünmeyle grup ikinci albümüyle bir çok platin albüm ödülünü aldı. 1992 yılında piyasaya sürdükleri Dirt ise grubun bölünmesine sebep oldu. Gitarist Jerry Cantrell her zaman için piyasadan yana bir tavır sergilerken solist Layne Staley istenmeyen underground kültürden etkilenmişti. Bu tip gerginlikler grubun ilk yıllarında adını duyurmasına sebep oldu fakat Dirt’le birlikte Alice In Chains uluslararası gerilimlerden uzak kalamadı bir yandan da bu onların potansiyellerini sonuna kadar kullanmasını engelledi. Layne Staley grubu, 80’li yılların ortasında lisedeyken Alice N Chains adıyla kurdu. O dönemde bir «glam rock» grubunda bulunan Staley; Jarry Cantrell’le 1987 yılında Music Bank adlı müzisyenlerin topluca kaldığı bir prova deposunda tanıştı ve ikili grubun adını Alice in Chains olarak değiştirerek birlikte çalışmaya başladı.

I also think that AIC sometimes remind me of Black Sabbath. If you would ask me "how so?" then I would say that the answer lies in the sound. Where "sound" is everything that streams out of the speakers.

"Oh yeah, and Inez is not even close to being as good as Starr. Anyone who knows bass can tell you this." - Funny you should say that. I've had this same debate with a friend of mine who plays bass, and he thinks Inez is better (while I, like yourself, think Starr is far superior). It really comes down to a subjective opinion. They're comparable in skill and it really goes down to what your favorite riff is. ----- Anyhoo, I really like the new song and was pleasantly surprised by Duvall's performance. I'm a little disappointed in the lack of a solo however, but that's just a minor beef. If the whole album is this good, then I'm happy.

I agree, new song is really good and it needs no defence. H&H sounds like AiC? I don't think so, but the roots of this music are the same because Iommi is the master of heavy riffs and it goes without saying.

I just cannot believe all the negativity surrounding this new stuff. Face it, it kills all they've done in the past. This is a NEW chapter. They're not trying to be the 'Chains of the past....and good for them. Sure they have they elements of the old AIC, but this is quite refreshing. Duvall can sing, Cantrell can sing. I wish them luck and this album is going to give them the much needed boost for there career in this stale music market we live in today. At least they don't sound like Nickelback or fucking Hinder! Let the legend live on and enjoy this ripping ass new music! I've seen Duvall with AIC live during the acoustic tour and couldn't ask for anything more. Besides, Jerry did most of the vocals anyways. I'am sure some of you have favorite bands that replaced their singer during some point. Do you hate them? AIC, do what you gotta do for you and not for your fans. Seems like you've lost most of your "fans" lately anyways. They new songs kicks my ass! Glad it's not grunge.

What are you claiming now, that "kangaroo boy" or "dingo boy" isn't trash talking Australia? Please. This was clearly a pot shot at Australian stereotypes, as nowhere have I stated my fondness of these animals, hence you couldn't ascertain that these "insults" would offend me, and only me. I haven't said anything derogatory about Portugal, and Lord knows there's a shitload to criticise that place about.

A simple typo isn't the same thing as huge grammatical errors, lack of line breaks etc, but I'll concede this to you if it'll make you feel better. Funny that you can't think of anything better than "kangaroo boy", although surely "dingo boy" is a contender for witty remark of the year - is this meant to be an insult?
