This looked fun.
1. How did you get into 29?
I got into
The Promise Ring soon after I discovered
Cap'n Jazz, I believe. Once I listened to CJ enough, I started to branch out and listen to the members' new bands. The Promise Ring happened to be one of those bands, along with
Joan of Arc,
Owls,
Friend/Enemy,
Ghosts and Vodka, and
Noyes.
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
The first song I heard by
El Ten Eleven was
"My Only Swerving". The bar/none website had an mp3 of it, and the band sounded interesting enough -- so I gave it a listen. It continues to be my second favorite song by the band, next to
"Connie".
3. How many albums by 13 do you own?
I own just one
Deerhunter album --
"Cryptograms". I guess I'll get around to picking up "Fluorescent Grey", but it's not top priority.
4. What is your favorite song by 15?
Tough.
Bright Eyes has always been a band that I have to listen to an entire album through to appreciate wholly. My girlfriend got me into the song "
Poison Oak" -- very beautiful. I'd have to say "
Weather Reports" or "
Drunk Kid Catholic" are my favorites, with the latter coming just a bit ahead.
5. What is your favorite song by 5?
Easily, easily "
The Purple Bottle".
Animal Collective are brilliant, and they somehow turned that song into audio crack. I'm a fiend for it.
6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
Not too many.
The Appleseed Cast isn't a very cheery band. I'd probably say "
The Page", that's the first that comes to mind.
7. What is your favorite song by 10?
If you would have asked me this a year ago - I would probably list my top ten favorite
Cap'n Jazz songs instead. Now that I'm not as obsessed as I was as a High School senior looking for an escape -- I'd say "
Forget Who We Are" is my favorite, with "
Little League" a close second. The former is a live recording, but is so full of passion, it's practically irresistible. The band played fucking basements the majority of their three or four career, yet they're so precise - the song is so tight instrumentally, even though Cap'n is now smiled up on for their sloppy composure.
8. What is a good memory you have involving 30?
Driving home from seeing
Owen,
Aloha, and Anathallo with my girlfriend. She fell asleep halfway through the album, leaving me to appreciate it by myself with the tear of the street below us as the only other sound.
9. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
I assume everyone would say
Battles's "Atlas" makes them happy, but "Tonto" is my song. I think the first time I heard it was at this nice coffee shop called Inman Perk, and I fell completely in love.
10. How many times have you seen 25 live?
None, sadly.
Birthmark doesn't tour much since Nate is tied up with Joan of Arc and Make Believe.
11. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
"Buses/No Buses". I remember hearing a lot about
Bear vs. Shark maybe my sophomore or junior year of high school. I remember looking them up on purevolume in class one day, and not liking "Buses/No Buses" very much at all. I gave the band another listen soon after that, and ended up realizing that they were perfect for me. Glad I saw them live before they broke up. What a show...
12. What is your favorite album by 11?
He's only had one proper release, so I'd say that, though his various EPs are also quite good.
13. Who is a favorite member of 1?
Tim Kinsella has seen me out of a lot of tough times, but I'd have to say
Sam Zurick is my favorite member of Joan of Arc. I'm fortunate enough to have interviewed him and have talked to him occasionally since then, and what a goofy guy. Very intelligent in the most tongue and cheek way possible.
14. Have you ever seen 14 live?
Yes, just recently actually.
Explosions in the Sky's last tour for a while to be exact. It was stunning. More than I could have hoped for from a band I've been listening to for longer than I can remember.
15. What is a good memory involving 27?
Good memories of
Deerhoof? Maybe the first time I heard "Choco Fight". Or hearing my friend Connor's interpretation of their live show. "The bunny's going to get you!!" or some shit like that.
16. What is your favorite song by 16?
The Love of Everything's "Too Much Happy Wet Hair" kills me every time.
17. What is your favorite album by 18?
Idiot Pilot -
Strange We Should Meet Here.
Wolves is terrible...
18. What is your favorite song by 21?
When I saw
Maritime play "Protein and Poison" live, I declared there and then (five feet from Davey Von Bohlen) that that was my favorite song.
19. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
"Bros". I must have listened to it about ten times that night.
20. What is your favorite album by 2?
"You, You're A History In Rust" is not only my favorite
Do Make Say Think Album -- it's possibly the best album I physically own.
21. What is you favorite song by 3?
"Equinox", I'd say. Either that or "Weekend". It's hard to pick a favorite among Aloha songs.
22. What is you favorite song by 8?
"Therapists" is incredible.
23. How many times have you seen 17 live?
Twice. Once when he came to Atlanta with The Appleseed Cast. And then my girlfriend and I drove up to Virginia to see him at some festival. Never have been disappointed by Owen.
24. What is the worst song by 12?
American Football did not write one bad song. I love them all, but...
"But the Regrets Are Killing Me"?
25. What was the first song you ever heard by 25?
"Engwish Bwudd", probably.
26. What is you favorite album by 7?
My favorite
Modest Mouse album used to be This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About, but Building Nothing Out of Something has relinquished it of its thrown.
27. What is your favorite song by 24?
blink-182's "Mutt".
28. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy?
Braid's "Breathe In" puts a smile on my face.
29. What is your favorite album by 4?
Their new album, actually. Going to the Bone Church. Though, all the
Make Believe albums are quite good.
30. How many albums do you own by 20?
I have all of them on my computer, but physically own only one --
World Class Listening Problem
