    Arcana

    The Evpatoria Report

  • 30 things I don't think you should really know about my favorite 30 artists

    14 Ağu 2008, 21:13 yazan cosimatropina

I recently discovered this and found it interesting to look on my top 30 artists a little closer...

    1. How did you get into 29?
Wednesday 13 came free with my new boyfriend. *g*

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
That's ÇalWinter's Dancing by Art Of Empathy which I got from the sampler "Autumn calls - winter awaits" which you can download for free at http://lunarhypnosis.com/.

    3. What's your favorite song by 14?
That's ÇalLove Me to the End by Deine Lakaien.

    4. What is your favorite album by 16?
Chopin didn't really make albums, so... But I like his nocturnes the best.

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own?
I own two albums by Faith and the Muse.

    6. What is your favorite song by 17?
That's clearly ÇalKiss by London After Midnight.

    7. Is there a song by 7 that makes you sad?
    ÇalInnocent Child by Arcana.

    8. What is your favorite album by 15?
I guess it's Pretty Hate Machine by Nine Inch Nails because it's so aggressive and rough.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5?
Oh that's tough. Diary of Dreams made a lot of different amazing songs... But if I had to choose I would pick Bird Without Wings II, I guess...

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
Stillste Stund doesn't really make happy music, so, no...

    11. What is your favorite album by 12?
At the moment I only own Maaäet by Tenhi. It is soooooo wonderful dark folk!

    12. What is your favorite song by 10?
Silke Bischoff - Small and Tired (Unplugged). It always makes me sad and brings back pictures of the past.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 20?
Soko Friedhof... Well, I remember their latest show I saw and there were some of those typical neon-cyber-guys who seemed to take the "music" very serious and did some very ridiculous dancing which was kinda funny. :)

    14. What is your favorite song by 8?
Portishead - ÇalRoads. No song has ever made me more sad...

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy?
Subaudition - Raindrops. It's like walking through a forest wet with summer rain.

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live?
Backworld - haven't seen them yet...

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
Omnia - Etrezomp-ni Kelted. And I still love it so much. :)

    18. What is your favorite album by 11?
Love Is Colder Than Death - Teignmouth. Good old darkwave...

    19. Who is a favorite member of 1?
That's not hard. It's Peter Spilles from Project Pitchfork. He is such a charismatic singer, I always get the feeling that I don't have enough arms and legs to express all my feeling in dancing when I get the chance to see this incredible band live.

    20. Have you ever seen 24 live?
    Qntal - Sadly, no.

    21. What is a good memory involving 27?
The Cure - I remember myself jumping and dancing around wildly through my parent's living room while singing Lovecats when I was maybe 15. :)

    22. What is your favorite song by 28?
That's ÇalLieber einsam mit den Freien fallen by Sagittarius - such a lovely piano piece.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 9?
Romowe Rikoito - I guess that has to be ÇalA Sea-Spell. Wonderful neofolk by the way!

    24. What is your favorite album by 18?
Goethes Erben - Nichts bleibt wie es war. It's their best imho.

    25. What is your favorite song by 21?
Eric Fish - Im Spiegel. I can listen to it ten times, though my general opinion about him is very ambivalent... (Does this word exist in English? :))

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26?
Letzte Instanz, oh gods... I really can't tell, that's been some years by now... But it probably was one from Kalter Glanz.

    27. What is your favorite album by 3?
Weh - The coffee's cold in the morning, the beer's warm at night. The title tells enough... :)

    28. What is your favorite song by 4?
Dornenreich - that is really really hard to decide, because every song is a unique masterpeace that gives me the shivers... The first album I owned was Her von welken Nächten and it must have been Wer hat Angst vor Einsamkeit? that impressed me most in those days. And it still impresses me.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 2?
Cranes - That was ÇalShining Road. That's a bit strange because it is such a dreamy, sunny song and I fell in love with their darker stuff later...

    30. What is your favorite song by 30?
Chamber - L'Orchestre de Chambre Noir - Toscana.

Wow, that's a long list, but it was fun to create it. And now I'll stop boring the world... *g*

  • Atmospheric Music, Chapter V

    Atmospheric Music, Chapter V
    Capitalized For Awesome.

Atmosphere is something that is generally subjective and can manifest itself in many ways. This is the fifth installment of a journal series where I rant on, recommend and explain some albums that I found to be very atmospheric in their nature. This is NOT a journal where I talk about my favorite albums overall. To read the previous journal Click Here.

Here are a few albums from artists that I've been obsessing over recently:

    17. Infidel?/Castro! - "Bioentropic Damage Fractal"
    Experimental / Avant-garde / Noise / Post-Rock

Experimental? Yes, to the point of plain weird and risking an overdose. I love this album so much I'm almost willing to call it my favorite album ever even though I hate all this "my favorite genre is" or "my favorite artist is" etc. etc. No ill will towards you who namedrop your favorites but I don't find my taste to be so easily pigeonholed. Bioentropic Damage Fractal is a melting pot of mixed sounds, sometimes done with "proper instruments" sometimes just whatever. From random and chaotic electronic grind to 20 minute long post-rockish ambient noise pieces. I really like the grind tracks, they're fun, constantly changing leaving you not knowing what to think really, but it's at the long atmospheric ambient operas where it's really at considering what kind of journal this is. The contrast is enormous, from extremely distractive grind to slow soundscape music. Which might answer the question why they're so unknown, I mean, someone who's into the one polarity wouldn't instinctively like the other, but then I guess to seek out this kind of music you would have to rather open-minded in the first place. It's just hard for me to fathom that something this great has gotten so little attention, hence I make up theories as to why that might be, it's a natural reflex, makes life easier.

"Let's make a song, start it out almost silent but continuously builds up an tension which rapidly expands the whole time for ten minutes" seriously... How fucking awesome isn't that for a song concept? It's not really that generic reverb-drenched ambient which you imagine it would be either, it's a more dry and noisy sound collage thing. There are so fucking many layers of sound, properly done panning as well, with good balance and sometimes psychedelic of nature, which just enhances the way this monstrosity of sound devours you. It's a gloomy, malicious, melancholic, chaotic double-disc opus which - if something - would suit as a soundtrack for the decay of mankind.

To sum this up: Avant-Garde is for the cool kids.

    18. Bohren & der Club of Gore - "Black Earth"
    Doom Jazz / (Dark) Ambient

Long droning ambient tones immediately captivate me as I begin to listen. The funeral-paced drums sets the tempo of my breathing. The rhodes piano plays a dark melody for me, an emotional one. Bass tones sounding as if they had traveled from the most unfathomable depths of the abyss has begun to tremble me. The bass is later on played with a bow which creates what can only be described as a fearsome sound. The almost silent buzzy noise created by the brush fondling the snare is tingling my ears. Ah the sax... I don't know how long it's been playing for I have forgotten when it begun. It plays me a lonely tune. Which isn't necessarily grieving the absence of company. It's a tone which I can relate to. I frequently find myself to be extremely tired of, and unwilling to participate in the social play that where we all must assume our "role" to survive in today's society. Since when was "survival of the fittest" exchanged with "survival of the most fake"? I often find myself trying to isolate myself from others, however I always fail because I am a wheel in society. Therefore this tone represents to me, a sense of belonging, I have found what I was looking for. It does not make me feel ecstatic, elated, hearty or happy. Yet despite all it's melancholic glory, it does make my heart pound hard and in a way makes me feel happy.
That was a slightly romanticized rant but whatever rite?

    19. ZandoZ Corp. - "Suffocating Egos"
Rhythmic Noise / IDM / Industrial

Suffocating Egos' atmosphere is very futuristic in it's nature, though it's not the corny sci-fi sound you might be imagining, it is a dark and dystopian cyberpunk atmosphere. Despite that imagining what kind of music would accompany a book or something is something so subjective, it is how I interpret it. I bet that people who are as familiar and appreciate cyberpunk-fiction as much as I do would agree. This highly unknown Brazilian combines rhythmic noise, IDM and industrial into a quite disturbing concoction. Industrial melodies and IDM ambiances with chaotic rhythms put on top, perhaps too noisy to be called IDM rhythms. The melodies usually aren't very special and kept quite simple but they're something that makes otherwise chaotic music pleasant to listen to... Well, pleasant in a subjective way :} I wouldn't exactly call this easy-listening if you understand what I mean. Anyways, what makes the melodies good is the great variety in sound with no melody sounding as the other. As well as how those are weaved together in all the layers to together create what is the mechanic sounding atmosphere of Suffocating Egos.

    20. Genghis Tron - "Board Up The House"
    Experimental / Electronic / Grindcore

Though admittedly it's far from my favorite Genghis Tron album. I much prefer the more direct approach of Dead Mountain Mouth. Despite that, I believe this to be their most atmospheric album hence why I chose this one. It feels pretty much like a natural successor to their older works and takes a more progressive approach than Dead Mountain Mouth which took a more progressive approach than Cloak of Love which was purely experimental. While all this progressive wankery with complicated fingerplay and chaotic transitions between rhythms and riffs is more than often frowned upon, I personally think Genghis Tron does such a good job at this, keeping it at a moderate level, that I think this just doesn't fall under the same umbrella. Allow me to further elaborate; this is GOOD while the other is BAD which leads us to the conclusion that Genghis Tron =/= Other.

Another thing issue I would like to address is metalheads problem with drum machines. They bitch and whine because it is done electronically and therefore not true and what the fuck who cares. A drum machine can first of all do ANYTHING normal drums can do, absolutely everything, including ghost tones and everything else. That is because you can sample. It can not only do ANYTHING normal drums can do it can also do it ten times better and ten times more dynamic with cutoff volumes and playback velocity etc. The list goes on, there are billions of alternatives. I play drums myself, when I want to make up a rhythm to go with the music I imagine it in my head at first and then play it, the only difference when I use a drum machine is that instead of playing it I draw it, I get the exact same beat, actually I even prefer writing drums with a drum machine because it's faster and I can plough through ideas more quickly. The only area where a drum machine is obsolete is within improvisation, but what-the-fuck would you call metal an improvisational genre? Genghis Tron uses drum machine because with the proper knowledge it just plain sounds better.

Anyways, time to get back on topic. The structure of this album is quite brilliant and you can immediately tell that it's meant as one long song rather than separate works. Some parts are more interlude-ish and some are more meant as choruses, and I don't mean choruses in their traditional sense, I mean it as something that stands out from the rest of the song which just happens to be kind of catchy. I don't even think any song has any choruses in their traditional meaning. The IDM influences are still here, thank God for that (I don't mean God as in God, rather simply as an expression), though not as obvious and frequent as in Dead Mountain Mouth. But at least they don't make the same kind of album over and over again which would just be embarrassing, though that being said this is still very similar to it's predecessor. The slight noise influence seems to have been even further toned down to the point of disappearing completely. Some parts of the album is ambient, but never completely, rather it is often kept in the background which gives the soundscape an obscure feeling with their more recurring and "convenient" synth with heavy and harsh on top. Something that I find myself enjoying is the more on this in comparison to the previous album is the more frequent journeys into clean-oriented singing which are just breathtakingly beautiful, or perhaps that is the wrong word as they can be quite upsetting at times as well, in contrast to the harsh screaming to heavy music it sends shivers down my spine. The melodies send shivers down my spine, especially those of the more interlude oriented songs. This album sends shivers down my spine.

Thank you for reading, if you did. For further reading check out (though the early ones are kinda suckeeeh (not the albums, just my writing about them)):

  • 30k... Or not

    18 Tem 2008, 20:29 yazan Beliyal

No, this is not about my new stats for the celebration of the 30k scrobbled songs. I bet you are so eager to find out why. It's because of the new last.fm :D >_> First it lagged and then it began to show that I have around 500 more songs than I should have. Thus, I missed the 30k song. Yes, I counted back to see which one is it, but the stats were already much different than they were when I reached 30k scrobbles. Around 260 songs more. I waited to see if that screwed up count number is just a bug or is it final. It seems it's final ._. So, yeah, I missed the joy of doing the 30k scrobbles journal and I missed the joy of making my 30k song something I want and not something random. Alright, Quarantine is not really random due to the fact that I raped it brutally. But still >_>... Thank you last.fm >_> This will not be forgotten. No, I swear it. I remember everything and I will get my revenge (??). Now I will do the late 30k scrobbles journal T__T So, no, it's not about 30k, it's about some 30,260 scrobbled tracks. Such a beautiful, round number :D Just like most of my milestones.

    anyway, tl;dr :D

The journal begins here, you can skip the rant.

I don't know when I reached 30k, but I believe it was a few days ago. Still, it is questionable. That song was (most probably) Atrium Carceri - Quarantine.

    Top 10 artists
    1. Therion (3,701)
    2. Diary of Dreams (1,602)
    3. The Vision Bleak (1,498)
    4. Nox Arcana (1,305)
    5. Moonspell (1,201)
    6. The Crüxshadows (1,135)

    8. Arcana (979)
    9. Atrium Carceri (964)
    10. Laibach (923)

    Predictions
Urgh, I don't know. I will just skip predictions since I can't really know what new bands I will discover that will enter my top 10 charts. I just believe that Laibach will get higher on the list. And some other things too probably, like Aesma Daeva will get in the list. With time.

    Top 10 tracks
    1. The Crüxshadows - Carnival (345)
    2. Atrium Carceri - Quarantine (298)

    Top 10 albums
    1. The Vision Bleak - Deathship Has A New Captain (563)
    2. Gothica - The Cliff of Suicide (558)

    9. The Crüxshadows - Wishfire (359)
    10. Gothica - Night Thoughts (343)

    Predictions
Probably some Laibach album will get in the top ten. Maybe some Therion too. And I have no idea when will some album overthrow Deathship O_o

  • Two new Za Frûmi albums released the 4th of July - Dark fantasy music

    5 Tem 2008, 22:23 yazan Waerloga

Waerloga records are very proud to present you with two (!!) new Za Frûmi albums released at the same time.

    Legends act 3 - Cults

    Legends act 4 - Orders

The release date: 4th of July 2008 (Worldwide)

The albums have been in the making during the last year now and pretty soon they realized they wanted to create not one but two releases at the same time.

Za Frûmi has two branches and the two upcoming releases are both in the Legends series. The previously released “Legends act 2 – Vampires” was a big hit and sold almost as good as the now sold out debut back in 2000. Legends act 2 was used in several films and receiving top scores in the dark ambient and fantasy scene. Among many the composer Ennio Morricone really enjoyed Legends act 2.

Both members of Za Frûmi: Simon Kölle (also in Musterion, Abnocto) and Simon Heath ( also in Atrium Carceri, Abnocto) have several other projects on labels such as Cold Meat Industry , Horus CyclicDaemon, Major Label Industries and
Waerloga records. They wanted to dive deep into the world of Za Frûmi and with two albums examine Cults and Orders.

The two digipacked albums have 11 tracks and are proof that Za Frûmi is taking another step forward. In my humble opinion these two releases should have the same extraordinary good welcome as the debut album had even though this is instrumental music (with astonishing vocals and choirs!). The albums redefine the view on the project once again but without going into a new style or spoiling what already was great. The albums are perhaps the darkest and the most complete albums ever released in the genre! This is bold and big words I admit that and you might wonder if this is only hype? I promise you it´s not hype or me trying to sell Za Frûmi. I don´t need to as they already have a big following and are considered a cult act.

    Legends act 3 – CULTS (waer013)

The Cults of the world are seen as primitive and very harsh. They differ from the Orders as many of them live in the wild and in old abandoned temples of doom. The cults all share the common ground in that they worship a deity. Not all of them are sects of murder and blood but some of them most certainly are.

The music on this album is all about the Cults and the different way they approach the world.

    Tracklist:

    1. The Cult of the Great Eye

    2. The Cult of the Dragon Maw

    3. The Cult of the Ysa´ih

    4. The Cult of the Queen of Heaven

    5. The Cult of Nudero

    6. The Cult of Mortalis

    7. The Cult of Helzichor

    8. The Cult of Azoot

    9. The Cult of Genohsa

    10. The Cult of Maelzeth

    11. The Blood Cult of the Nosferatu

    Legends act 4 – ORDERS (waer014)

The Orders of the world are the secret society´s with the power behind the thrones in many cities. They have often carefully graded and progressed teachings which are available only to a very selected few, an elite. The teachings lead to hidden and highly unique truths which bring personal benefits beyond the reach and even the understanding of the uninitiated. Secret rituals, oath´s and obligations vary but are always present. The Orders are esoteric with roots in different mysterious traditions from all over the world. Even though there of course exist military Orders they are set apart from the truly secretive ones with the real knowledge of the dark arts and the complexity of alchemy.

The music on this album is cinematic and explores the Orders of the world of Za Frûmi.
