Biyografi

Atheist, Florida, ABD’li death metal grubu. 1984 yılında «Oblivion» adıyla, gitarist (sonradan vokale de geçen) Kelly Shaefer ve davulcu Mark tarafından kuruldu. Mark’ın görevine daha sonra davulcu Steve Flynn getirildi. Roger Patterson daha sonra bas gitarist olarak gruba girdi. 1985’in başlarında isimlerini R.A.V.A.G.E (Raging Atheists Vowing A Gory End) olarak değiştirdiler. Bu isim altında gruba Scrappy lakaplı bir vokal aldılar. Scrappy aslen hiç bir kayıtlarında bulunmadı. İlk demo 1985’de «Kill or be Killed», Rotting in Hell demo olarak da bilinen adla yayınlandı ve ikinci demo da 1987’de On the Slay adıyla, solo gitarda Mark Scwartzberg ile beraber kaydedildi ve yayınlandı.

R.A.V.A.G.E olarak son demolarını çıkardıktan sonra isimlerini Atheist olrak değiştirdiler. Bu isimle 2 demo yayınladılar, Hell Hath No Mercy(‘87) ve Beyond(‘88). Debut albümleri «Piece of Time»ı 1988’de Mean Machine şirketinden yayınladılar. 1989’da tekrar bir demo geldi fakat şirket battı ve bunun üzerine grup 1990’da «Active» şirketinden yayınladı bu demoyu. 91’de basist Roger Patterson bir trafik kazasında yaiamını yitirdi ve yerini Tony Choy alındı, yeni üyeyler ikinci albümleri, bugün klasiklerden olan «Unquestionable Presence»ı kaydettiler. Atheist 1992’de bir süreliğine dağıldı ve 93’de yeniden birleşti. Elements adlı son albümlerini kaydettikten sonra ikinci kez dağıldılar.

Relapse Records grubun 3 albümünü yeniden bastı ve 2005’de R.A.V.A.G.E’in de materyallerini barındıran bir plak koleksiyonu çıkardı. Eski davulcu Steve Flynn de projesi Gnostic ile meşgul. www.gnosticmusic.com

    I don't see anything wrong with the production there. It's decent. The album itself, tho, is rather meh. Or maybe it just seems that way because I think of it as an Atheist album.

    IMHO in Jupiter there is a huge lack of a real bass player. I wonder why Choy (or some other good bass player) didn't join the recordings. There is no fretless, only pick-played bass by the guitarist Jonathan Thompson.

    What do you mean a pain in the ass? Difficult? I'm going to have to give Jupiter some listens with some headphones though since it's been a long time since I listened to it and always with my poor laptop speakers. Am I incorrect in recalling a small section of fretless bass in Jupiter though?

    to answer to Steve and traszomator, i can't imagine an Atheist record without the Choy's growl of fretted bass too. I love and play fretless, but in this case conversion to fretless is useless. Btw, the bass work of Jupiter (done by the guitar guy) is a pain in the ass. That's a big problem.

    Piece of Time > all. In fact, I think that they went progressively worse on each new album. That isn't to say that any of the albums is musically a failure.

    Exactly, the percussive bass is a huge part of their sound. The mere thought of a full-time conversion to fretless is objectively stupid.
