I think you need to brush up on your metal literature, I could recommend a fair few books on heavy metal, all supporting the general consensus that Black Sabbath were the first.

I know it was sung by Martin, and I had the lyrics in it's own segment... If only last.fm had let me use a row break... And my writing made it look like Dio was the singer... But I wrote it more of a justification of why I put Martin before Ozzy! :D Since it is such a kick ass song, Headless Cross. The intro and Martins vocals totally blew me off, what a pleasent surprise it was! :D

as for the singers, I think that the "better" singers overall are: Dio=Gillan>Martin>Ozzy>Hughes. Can't decide between Gillan and Dio... but I love his performances in Deep Purple too much to go for Dio, and Dio, well, he is an amazing singer! :------) "AT THE HEADLESS CROSS! Ozzy era>Dio era>Martin era>Gillan era>Hughes era. IMO. Something for the Sabbath fan to look up is this cool live recording of Black Sabbath, with Ian Gillan. Or just follow this link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEaJWYV_wXQ I was really surprised to hear such a good version of Black Sabbath without Ozzy, and Ian utilizes his voice in a bit different manner than he usually does, a bit darker etc. Pretty cool.

That's a senseless discussion. I prefer Dio, but nevertheless the work with Ozzy is great, no question. I wonder why some people can't just listen to the music and have a good time...There's no accounting for taste, so neither Ozzy nor Dio should be discredited!

I really feel some people over-estimate Ozzy's role in Sabbath. Without doubt his stage presence/antics played a part in their popularity, and he had a great voice. But I don't think it's true to say "He WAS Black Sabbath". Iommi was Black Sabbath. He did most of the writing and crafted the riffs, the single most important thing in heavy metal music. Iommi made Sabbath what it was. Ozzy undoubtedly added to that, but I really don't see him as the "lord of metal" or any such.

For me Black sabbath is with Ozzy. However anyone who says that Sabbath without Ozzy sucks seriously needs to look into heaven and Hell, It's an amazing album and a giant leap forward compared to the last albums with Ozzy.

I really like Sab' with Dio but acording to me, Black Sabbath IS Ozzy Osbourne, and Ozzy Osbounre IS Black Sabbath. I think Sabotage is their best, Ozzy sounds really fantastic in this album... really really good one.
