  • How I got into my top 50

    21 May 2008, 09:42 yazan Sabeline

    Because I'm bored and haven't posted a journal in a while. :P

    1. My Chemical Romance - This one's a pretty long story. A few years ago, a friend gave me a mixed cd with two songs (I'm Not Ok and Cemetery Drive, if you care) and I quite enjoyed them, but it wasn't love at first play or anything. Actually, I was going through this insane 'I only listen to dizzyingly fast, noisy post-hardcore bands that nobody else in my life has heard of' stage, so I didn't bother listening to any of their other stuff. Then my sister got into them through a friend, and she got REALLY obsessed. So I listened, and really enjoyed it, but it still didn't develop into the obsession it is now. However, my sister being totally obsessed, she talked our parents into buying us tickets to see them live. I walked out of that arena feeling, melodramatic as it sounds, like every feeling, thought and idea I'd ever had in my life had just come to life in front of my eyes that night. Since then I've been, I confessed, a bit of a rabid MCR fangirl. Hey, we all have our weaknesses.

    2. From First to Last - I used to pretty much live on this Harry Potter fanfic community a couple of years ago, and one of my favourite authors kept banging on in her profile about FFTL. I got curious, so I looked them up (on this site), listened to a 30 second preview of Note To Self, and developed an instant addiction. I went out and bought Dear Diary, and listened to it on repeat for a few weeks straight.

    3. Paramore - This one was really just a case of hearing a band's name mentioned about a gazillion times, buying an album out of mild curiosity, and really really liking it.

    4. Fall Out Boy - God, I used to hate them. Over time, I just succumbed to the catchiness of their music and the allure of Pete Wentz' admittedly pretentious lyrics. They're up there among my favourite bands nowadays.

    5. The Getaway Plan - They were actually supporting at the MCR show I talked about before. I didn't like them much at the time, mostly because I was sick with excitement waiting for MCR to come on, but when they came to play in my city I went along for fun. It was an awesome show, I got really into them and I'll be seeing them for the fourth time this weekend.

    6. I Am Ghost - You know, I don't even remember. It was probably Last.fm, actually. All I remember is hitting Killer Likes Candy on their album, and stopping right there to listen to it on repeat several more times.

    7. The All-American Rejects - I think this was a result of listening to Red Jumpsuit Apparatus' similar artist radio. I don't remember what the song was called, only that I really enjoyed it.

    8. Rasputina - A couple of people on this forum I used to go on were talking about them. So I looked them up, and really liked them.

    9. AFI - My ex-boyfriend was an obsessive fan. Most of my AFI collection was borrowed from him.

    10. Christian Death - I was interested for a while in the gothic and deathrock side of music, and I really took to Christian Death.

    11. Kisschasy - When I was twelve or so, I found a copy of United Paper People for $3 at a second-hand bookstore. I bought it. Been a fan ever since.

    12. Miranda Sex Garden - I think they were recommended to me on last.fm, actually. Yeah, I've found a lot of music via this site.

    13. Panic! At the Disco - Like everyone else, I heard I Write Sins Not Tragedies on the radio. And like everyone else, I got totally obsessed.

    14. The Clash - I borrowed an album from the local library. And liked it. A lot.

    15. Mindless Self Indulgence - Ok, I confess, I started listening to them after Lyn-Z married Gerard. But I really liked their music, so I'd call myself a legitimate fan now instead of a lame obsessive teenie. XD

    16. The Used - Another long story. Back in grade 9 or so, I was really, really depressed. I listened to Simple Plan, Green Day and Evanescence, and I wore a lot of black. These factors led me to be labelled as emo by a pack of ignorant 14-year-olds, and as an ignorant 14-year-old myself I just accepted the label. At some point in that year, we had a themed poetry analysis assignment for English and one girl picked 'emo' as her topic (she was actually one of the popular, preppy group). She used, as one of her 'poems', the lyrics of I'm A Fake by The Used. My 14-year-old mind made a connection: 'hey, so they're emo, and I'm emo...maybe I'd like them.' Needless to say, I DID like them. A lot.

    17. Cobra Starship - My boyfriend is really into them. He played me a couple of songs, and I liked them. :)

    18. Stealing O'neal - They were supporting The Getaway Plan at one of their shows. I bought their EP afterwards and really enjoyed it.

    19. The Cure - I was just curious, so I bought a Greatest Hits cd. And kinda...got addicted.

    20. Fields of the Nephilim - Uh, this would be another one from my goth phase. I still love them though.

    21. Bauhaus - Someone on a forum (same forum as the Rasputina people, actually) recommended them to me.

    22. Morrissey - Went to a second-hand record store. Saw a Morrissey cd (Your Arsenal) for five bucks. Bought it. Glad I did. Very glad.

    23. Underoath - A last.fm discovery, I rather fancy.

    24. Queen - Mum was feeling nostalgic so she bought a Greatest Hits cd. She played it in the car one day, and I just fell in love with Freddie Mercury's vocals.

    25. Black Tape for a Blue Girl - I think they're from last.fm too. I like listening to them when I read. :)

    26. Giacomo Puccini - Borrowed a recording from my dad. Half my family are classical musicians, so I was pretty much raised on it.

    27. Epica - Someone told me they were like a better Nightwish. They are.

    28. Drop Dead, Gorgeous - Found them on last.fm. I don't listen to them anymore...they were my favourite band ages back, when I was going through a really rough time. They bring up bad memories.

    29. Hawthorne Heights - Heard about them on last.fm.

    30. Alphaville - Another moderator on a forum I used to work on was hardcore into them and pretty much ordered me to go listen to them. XD

    31. Cute Is What We Aim For - last.fm, I love you.

    32. The Matches - Another band attributed to my boyfriend. XD

    33. Madina Lake - Read about them in AP mag once when I was bored in the newsagent's. So I bought an album, and liked it.

    34. Iron Maiden - I have to confess, with all requisite guilt, that I first listened to them because Gerard Way talked about them constantly in Life On The Murder Scene as one of his earliest influences. I got really into them after that.

    35. Dead Can Dance - I honestly don't remember.

    36. Faith and the Muse - last.fm

    37. Aiden - Listened to them on MySpace one day because I was bored, and got totally addicted to One Love.

    38. The Dresden Dolls - A friend played Missed Me years ago while I was at her house. Last year, the song randomly got stuck in my head for like a week and I had no idea who it was by. So I googled the lyrics, and found The Dresden Dolls.

    39. Siouxsie and the Banshees - My best friend was obsessed with the Marie Antoinette film. It had a Siouxsie track on the soundtrack, so she made me listen to it and I really liked.

    40. Scary Kids Scaring Kids - Last.fm, I think. I got into them when they had hardly ANY scrobbles, then they suddenly got huge and EVERY scene kid knows about them. Yes, I am resentful. :P

    41. Hungry Lucy - Free downloads on last.fm, hurrah.

    42. Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends played on the radio. I was an angsty preteen and thought it was the deepest song ever.

    43. Senses Fail - last.fm originally, I guess.

    44. Jack Off Jill - A kid on some forum was talking about Strawberry Gashes. I really liked it, so I bought a couple of albums and got pretty obsessed for a while.

    45. Kill Hannah - Now they're a recent obsession. I heard about them over last.fm ages ago, and bought an album a while ago. Hopefully they'll be higher up my charts soon.

    46. The Sisters of Mercy - Another one from the goth phase. As with all those bands, I still adore them.

    47. Sweeney Todd - I shouldn't have this tagged as an artist, it's actually the sountrack from the Tim Burton movie adaptation. But it's more convenient the way I have it tagged.

    48. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Once again, I grew up on a steady diet of classical music. Mozart, along with ABBA, was my earliest musical passion.

    49. Voltaire - My sister forced me to listen to When You're Evil. I thought it was hilarious.

    50. Thursday - I honestly don't know.

  • bands i've seen live

    10 Oca 2008, 16:05 yazan deementia

my sad little master list of most of the bands i've ever seen live, with review commentaries

*this list excludes: crap bands whose names i've forgotten & bands i saw before i knew what good music is

    - Tara Van Flower, Killing The Old Man, Audio Paradox, Vivid, Savior Machine, Fold Zandura, Anaphylaxsis, Regenerator, Aleixa, Judean Radiostatic @ Cornerstone Music Fest (campsite) in Bushnell IL in either 1996, 1997, & 2000
i attended these "christian" festivals w/ my family when i was too silly & shy to attend concerts of my choice. at the time i liked these bands but Tara Van Flower, Alexia & Regenerator are the only ones i'd still listen to.
    - Pigface (w/ Gravity Kills & Godhead) @ The Ranch Bowl in Omaha NE 12/15/2001
Godhead didn't impress me. Gravity Kills were alright for the two songs i recognized. Most of the crowd seemed to be there for them and left afterwards. i thought Pigface was great (admittedly Chris Connelly’s little acoustic set after GK wouldn't have prompted me to stay if i didn't know Pigface). Curse Mackey was climbing around and Meg Lee Chin had awesome girl power and Martin drummed like a machine and they played loads of my fave songs... i only wish En Esch would've been there...
    - V/A @ Projektfest 2002 (The Trocadero & The Hampton Inn) in Philadelphia PA 5/24/2002-5/26/2002
~Unto Ashes - performed well enough for me to be prompted to buy their cd (unless i already owned it, i forget)
~Black Tape for a Blue Girl - beautiful as always, esp w/ the violin & flute
~Voltaire (regular show + acoustic set) - so funny and fun to watch, both his sets were fest highlights for me
~Mira - one of the bands i was most looking forward to and their surprisingly rockin' set didn't disappoint
~Johnny Indovina - i was (and still am) unfamiliar w/ his work but his set was alright
~Lovespirals (regular show + acoustic set) - pretty but it was the last set of the night & i was knackered
~Roach/Obmana - being an atmospheric type project i thought it was rather boring to watch
~Audra (regular show + acoustic set) - loved them beforehand and still do, both sets impressed me
~Mors Syphilitica (regular show + acoustic set) - i only knew 1 song at the time but liked them lots esp Lisa's voice
~Android Lust (acoustic set) - AL is typically electro & kinda harsh so this was a real treat, definite highlight!
~The Mirror Reveals (acoustic set) - unfamiliar at the time but i enjoyed their set... i ought to get a CD by them
~Christopher David (acoustic set) - not so impressed, don't remember why exactly
    - Hungry Lucy & The Dreamside @ Dracula's Ball (Shampoo) in Philadelphia PA 5/26/2002
i didn't know either of these bands at the time. Hungry Lucy sang beautifully & i've since taken to them muchly. this show was The Dreamside's first gig in america & they had fire (literally) but i wasn't so much into them (esp the singer's voice).
    - Idlewild (w/ The French Kicks) @ the Sokol Underground in Omaha NE 3/23/2003
The French Kicks didn't do much for me so i hung back. by the time Idlewild was on i was standing one person back from the little stage and their rockin' performance was well worth the effort.
    - The Faint (w/ Les Savy Fav & Schneider TM) @ the Sokol Auditorium in Omaha NE 4/11/2003
Schneider TM was fairly good, not very visually interesting though. Les Savy Fav was a bit too visually interesting (the singer climbed up to the balcony & at some point i think he may have undid his pants). The Faint was awesome and catchy. Omaha is their hometown so the fairly large crowd responded great; being smack in the center of it i had little choice but to bop along with them.
    - Placebo (w/ Ambulance LTD) @ the 9:30 Club in Washington DC 7/01/2003
my first Placebo gig so i was uber-excited. Brian Molko was ill so Stefan did the talking, which was very nice. at the time i was to excited to care about Ambulance but i've since grown to like them.
    - Placebo (w/ Ambulance LTD) @ the TLA in Philadelphia PA 7/02/2003
even after seeing them the day before i was still totally stoked. this gig was better, Bri seemed less ill and they played more encores.
    - Placebo (w/ stellastarr*) @ the TLA in Philadelphia PA 12/13/2003
Placebo was awesome as usual. i'd bought Stellastarr's cd as soon as i found out they were the openers & so by then was very much into them.
    - Rasputina (w/ Hazard County Girls) @ The Ranch Bowl in Omaha NE 7/27/2004
i was smack in front of Melora w/ maybe one person between us (or perhaps not)... i mean i coulda grabbed her cello. Raspy rocked in a sitting down with cellos kind of way and Mel and her randomness was amusing. HCG were rockin in a different way & i ended up buying their cd.
    - Beep Beep (/w Edie Sedgwick & Medication & Jai Ali Savant) @ The Khyber in Philadelphia PA 4/3/2005
Edie Sedgwick was a guy in a dress that performed songs about celebrities in front of a video backdrop & was highly entertaining. the reason we were at the show was for Beep Beep though & they turned out fun & weird. i have little remembrance of the two other bands.
    - Enon (w/ Thunderbirds Are Now! & Stay Awake) @ Sokol Underground in Omaha NE 6/27/2005
TAN were catchy... but not so much that i checked them out afterwards. Enon was wonderful fun though. they rocked my socks, plus Toko is the epitome of sweet-cute singingness (just made that word up, didn't i?). i don't remember Stay Awake unless they were that boring first band.
    - Voltaire & The Crüxshadows @ Dracula's Ball (Shampoo) in Philadelphia PA 10/31/2005
Voltaire was bitingly funny as usual. The Cruxshadows were great to watch w/ their dancers & Rogue's wanderings through the club & climbing on stuff.
    - The Dresden Dolls (w/ The Red Paintings) @ the TLA in Philadelphia PA 10/28/2006
the best gig i've been to in my life. the duo was very entertaining & engaging in all respects. TRP were good too, i just wish i'd known some of their songs at the time.
    - Anders Manga & Ego Likeness @ Dracula's Ball (Shampoo) in Philadelphia PA 10/31/2006
after three or four songs Anders Manga (and my killer shoes) weren't doing it for me, my companion and i went downstairs and sat for a while we discussed how lackluster the band seemed. however, even on the cramped stage, Ego Likeness was fantastic even though they didn't play my favorite song of theirs.
    - Placebo (w/ She Wants Revenge) @ the Electric Factory in Philadelphia PA 11/06/2006
my least favorite of the Placebo gigs i've attended, due to the fact that they were co-heading and so didn't do any encores. plus the sound was way off for SWR.
    - Eagle*Seagull (w/ Landing On The Moon & Kite Pilot) @ Saddle Creek Bar in Omaha NE 1/19/2007
before the gig i'd only heard a few songs of Eagle Seagull's on myspace. all three bands seem to be from the general area. months later i bought an Eagle Seagull cd but i like them better live. i'd like to hear more from the other two.
    - Rasputina (w/ The Bowmans) @ The Trocadero in Philadelphia PA 4/07/2007
The Bowmans are a couple of acoustic type chicks, so i wasn't so into them. Raspy was amusing like always. they played a nice mix of old & brand new & covers. oddly, it was a sit-down gig.
    - Placebo (w/ Evaline) @ the TLA in Philadelphia PA 4/10/2007
after the disappointing gig w/ SWR i wasn't so sure but Placebo was back on top form. i was unfamiliar w/ Evaline but they were fun (singer seemed a bit bonkers though).
    - VNV Nation (w/ And One) @ The Trocadero in Philadelphia PA 4/13/2007
i didn't know any And One but they still made me wanna stomp around. i've loved VNV Nation for quite some time & was thrilled to get to witness them live. they were moving both in a lyrical and a musical way and i sang/shouted/smiled along with every song i knew. although they didn't play my fave song (Entropy) i still enjoyed every minute.
    - IAMX (w/ Hollowboy) @ North Star Bar in Philadelphia PA 10/15/2007
the second best gig i've ever been to. Hollowboy was good, but nothing compared with the theatrics of IAMX's Chris Corner. i didn't know any IAMX songs at the time and so didn't try to get very close (which i'm still kicking myself for) but still they blew my mind. Chris has since become my favorite singer & i'll go see IAMX again the first chance i get.
