The Twilight OST is set to be everyone's latest obsession and the movie hasn't even been released yet.



I vaguely recall Richard & Judy talking some time ago about the Twilight books when, out of the blue, every teenager across America was reading them. The most remarkable thing about the first book is the hero and heroine don't actually get together. They can't, because one's a vampire and the other's human. The vampire is unusual in that he consumes animal blood, not human, and he doesn't have spiky teeth. So the tension never leaves and that moment that ruined Moonlighting never occurs. Parents are relieved their kids aren't reading smutty books and everyone's dewy-eyed over these tales of true love that can never be. Although why everyone's glossing over blood and gore is beyond me, and one of the later books is particularly suspect.



It was only natural that Stephenie Meyer's books should be adapted for film. I'm sure she's over the moon (no pun intended) as Twilight was her debut novel. The film is due for release this weekend, the soundtrack was released in the US on 4 November and is due for release in the UK next week, 24 November. There is eager anticipation amongst fans and tracks have already made a huge impression on Last.fm, Perry Farrell jumping 842% this week to the top of the Artist Hype Charts with his track recorded especially for the film.



A quick glance at the album and you're either attracted or repelled by the big names, Linkin Park and Muse, who are obviously there to help sell the album. Their music has little to do with the romance of the books. Look further and you are rewarded with a good selection of music ranging from much better rock, through alt country and trip-hop to opera and classical (bonus tracks), not to mention lead actor Rob Pattinson himself. The latter two, by Giuseppe Verdi and Claude Debussy, are pretty much expected and shouldn't be unknown.

So let's look at the best tracks. Aside from the last two, especially Clair de Lune, for me, there are four: The Black Ghosts - Full Moon, Collective Soul - Tremble for My Beloved, Blue Foundation - Eyes On Fire, and the stunning Iron & Wine - Flightless Bird, American Mouth, which will be used for the prom scene.



If you're getting into the merchandise, you'll be pleased to know that in fashion, black is the new black and there's a lot of modern goth-type clothing to be found, as well as some really good blood reds, rouge noir and black cherry. This season is a great time to stock up on the right make up too and no one need feel excluded. For ladies, there's YSL's black lip gloss, which is used on top of normal lipstick to give it a black tint, or if you can afford it, the one to have is Lancome's limited edition duo for lips called ' The Piha Red', £45 , which is the perfect red lipstick and a black lip gloss. For men, I believe there's manscara and guyliner to experiment with. Yes, manscara and guyliner.
