  • Primavera Sound 2009 - den 3

    5 Haz 2009, 15:05 yazan skiwichu

    Primavera Sound 28.-30.5.2009

A měla hezký hlas.

Sakra, to sem přehlíd.

Ne, opravdu nebubnuju v kapele s Jeremy Jay
Jarmusch natočil dokumet o jeho kapele Crazy Horse a sám Young dělal hudbu k filmu Dead Man. Avšak zde na festivalu Primavera Sound vystoupil sólově s šestičlennou doprovodnou kapelou pod názvem Neil Young & His Electric Band.

Už hned s prvními tóny Mansion On The Hill z alba Ragged Glory dává tušit komu dnes večer patří. Tóny elektrické kytary eklekticky elektizují uhranuté osazenstvo a s následující Hey Hey, My My už zpívá celý 20ti tisícový dav. Neil nedává vůbec znát již pokročilý věk a hbitě střídá jednotlivé hudební nástroje, na kterých ukazuje své skilly v podobě nekončících kytarových sól. Ve třetí Are there any more real cowboys dokonce usedá k pianu, čímž dokazuje všem přítomným, s jakým že to multiinstrumentalistou mají čest. Neil poskádal svůj setlist průřezem ze všech jeho alb včetně letošního zdařilého Fork In The Road, z kterého zazněla rozevlátá Get Behind The Wheel. Základní část vystoupení ukončuje politickou Rockin' in the Free World a jako přídavek plně spokojené publikum konejší A Day In The Life.

No, přece mu dáte francouzáka, ne.)

(někdo s knírkem: Hi, how are you? skiwichu: Fine, thanks. někdo s knírkem: What are you lookin' for? skiwichu: Sorry.) Zombie Zombie sou dva relativně hodně ošklivý kuci; bubeník a obloženec v klávesách a syntezátorech, u kterých je znát inspirace klautrockovými kapelami. Bohužel v 5:15 nekompromisně organizátoři koncert utínají a tím i končí tenhle 3denní hudební maraton.

  • My next 2 favourite Bob Dylan Theme Time Radio Hour: BIRDS & MORE BIRDS

    22 May 2009, 15:37 yazan BlackCoffeeDuck

I wrote a journal about Theme Time Radio Hour With Your Host Bob Dylan not that long ago with the themes Coffee and Dogs which both were season one episodes. Coffee episode was one of the first being episode 5 which was first aired on May 31, 2006 and Dogs was episode 16 first aired on August 16, 2006. Season one had 50 episodes but we are up to season 3. With the theme episode Goodbye on April 15, 2009 which was the 100th original episode. It is unknown whether Theme Time Radio Hour will continue into a Season 4 but Dylan himself, during an interview with Rolling Stone magazine implied that his contract had ended. No official announcement about the show's future has been made at this time.

The new Bob Dylan album Together Through Life which is a cool album. I might have to listen a few more times. The bonus disc is the Friends & Neighbors episode but you can hear the Theme Time Radio Hour songs rubbing off on his new songs. I hope they official released all 100 episodes (somewhere or sometime). It's really great listening to Bob talk away about well, whatever the hell he wants too.

I'm going back to season 2 with the episode 71 and 72 Birds and More Birds shows. In the previous journal I wrote "I wish he would do Flying or Birds show" and he has on March 5, 2008 and March 12, 2008. I'm going to link all the songs here on last.fm that Bob plays on these shows.

  • This self-indulgent questionnaire regarding my Top 50 Artists

    8 May 2009, 20:10 yazan Crustclock

yeah I know you don't care, but I enjoyed filling it in

    1. How did you get into no.29?
Love: Started with ‘Da Capo’ and it's still my favourite.

    2. What's the first song you ever heard by no.22?
Joanna Newsom - ‘ÇalThe Book of Right-On’ (from ‘Milk Eyed Mender’): A poster on a forum I frequent uploaded this track at the end of review he had written for her debut. I listened to this one track about 20 times and then bought ‘Ys’ - One of my favourite albums of all time.

    3. Whats your favourite lyric by no.33?
Frank Zappa & Captain Beefheart: "She put a Doobie Brothers tape on/ I had a Roger Daltry cape on" (‘Carolina Hard-Core Ecstasy’ from ‘Bongo Fury’)

    4. How did you get into no.49?
Nick Drake: Someone on Last.fm said I would like him. I did.

    5. How many albums by no.13 do you own?
The Smiths: Self Titled, 'Meat Is Murder', 'The Queen Is Dead', 'Strangeways, Here We Come' and 'Louder Than Bombs' (5)

    6. What is your favorite song by no.50?
Harry Nilsson – ‘Çalthink about your troubles’ (from ‘The Point!’): Poetic lyrics and a lovely, winding tune that fits the meandering story of Oblio’s adventure. Simple but beautifully so (#6 and I’ve already used the word ‘beautiful’).

    7. Is there a song by no.7 that makes you sad?
The Band– ‘Katie’s Been Gone’ (from ‘The Band [Bonus Tracks]’ and ‘The Basement Tapes’): There’s a genuine-sounding longing in Robertson’s voice, especially in the line “well I don’t know how things are with us”.

    8. What is your favorite song by no.15?
Big Star – ‘Thank You, Friends’ (from ‘Third/ Sister Lovers’): I don’t care if it’s sarcastic, it cheers me up.

    9. What is your favorite song by no.5?
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band - ‘White Jam’ (from ‘The Spotlight Kid’): The perfect Cap’n track. The surrealistic lyrical imagery and that strangely sinister, undistorted riff (especially on the intro) is superb, and his inimitable, strangulated singing voice is one of his best vocal performances.

    10. Is there a song by no.6 that makes you happy?
David Bowie: actually, all my favourite Bowie tracks are the serious or slightly sinister ones (‘Time’ from ‘Aladdin Sane’, ‘Station to Station’ from ‘Station to Station’, ‘Be My Wife’ from ‘Low’…), but I suppose ‘ÇalOh! You Pretty Things’ (from 'Hunkey Dory') would a jolly track I really love.

    11. What is the worst song by no.40?
The Strokes: ‘On the Other Side’ (from ‘First Impressions of Earth’). It’s alright for the intro. It’s ruined by the silly, sing-song melody and the chorus is atrocious.

    12. What is your favorite song by no.10?
Donald Fagen – ‘ÇalI.G.Y.’ (from ‘The Nightfly’). It’s just brilliant. Brilliant lyrics, brilliant mood, brilliant hook, brilliant vocal delivery and a brilliant, timeless production sound. On first listen you can’t get that horn riff out of your head, and you think that it must be simply a catchy, gimmicky tune, but I’ve played that track and that album dozens of times and it still sounds soulful and fresh.

    13. What is a good memory you have involving no.30?
    John Lennon: pass

    14. What is your favorite song by no.38?
Fleetwood Mac – ‘ÇalThe Green Manalishi’: The song is dark - Green’s voice is so dirty and threatening, and those open-string chords really tear at you; the whole thing sounds so timeless, as well. I like to listen to music to reflect my mood so this is a good one to play when I’m seething with hate (which isn’t frequently).

    15. Is there a song by no.19 that makes you happy?
Ry Cooder – ‘I Got Mine’ (from ‘Chicken Skin Music’): Listen to that brass! It’s impossible to suppress a smile while listening to it, even though the lyrics are pretty bleak.

    16. Is there a song by no.25 that makes you sad?
R.E.M. – ‘Try Not to Breathe’ (from ‘Automatic For The People’): a kind of contemplative sadness, though.

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23?
Marvin Gaye – ‘What’s Going On’, probably, or maybe ‘Heard It Through The Grapevine’ on the radio some time. A bit of a waste of an artist, that question.

    18. What's your favorite lyric by no.11?
Joni Mitchell: “when there’s so much laughter, when there’s so much spark…when there’s so much sweetness in the dark” (‘Car on a Hill’ from ‘Court And Spark’). If you’ve heard her delivery you’d know why.

    19. Who is a favorite member of no.1?
Way to waste my chance to self-indulgently write a paragraph on Steely Dan! Can’t I answer this one as ‘What’s Your Favourite Album of no. 1?’ I can? Okay, cool: http://www.last.fm/user/Crustclock/journal/2009/03/19/2kt9b9_steely_dan_-_katy_lied._my_review.

    20. Is there a song by no.14 that makes you happy?
Electric Light Orchestra – ‘ÇalAbove the Clouds’ (from ‘A New World Record’): forget your pop prejudices and just listen to that vocal melody. How it deepens at “but it’s alright with me/ you better believe me now” really moves me somehow. That 4/4 beat on the piano is what sells it, though.

    21. What is a good memory involving no.27?
The Ramones: pass (I don’t have no good memories… I just don’t tie songs to them)

    22. What is your favorite song by no.16?
Randy Newman – ‘Jolly Coppers on Parade’ (from ‘Little Criminals’): love the tastefully restrained guitar licks and generally the upbeat mood.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by no.47?
    Little Feat: pass

    24. What is your favorite album by no.18?
The Who – ‘Quadrophenia’: solid songs throughout, minimal pomposity and a diverse sound thanks to Entwhistle’s horn.

    25. What is your favorite song by no.21?
The Doors– ‘ÇalYes, the River Knows’ (from ‘Waiting For The Sun’): richly diverse and winding, musically, and contains both a beautiful (there it is a again) vocal melody and jazz-inflected piano part.

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by no.28?
Led Zeppelin: …’Stairway to Heaven’. I dunno. Stop asking this.

    27. What is your favorite album by no.3?
Neil Young – ‘Tonight’s The Night’. One of my favourite albums of all time. If ever proof be needed that great art is borne from despair then this is all the proof needed. Dark and apocalyptic, but with brighter ‘moments of clarity’, to use that hoary old cliché, in amongst the tequila-fuelled, raggedy-edged melancholy.

    28. What is you favorite song by no.2?
The Beach Boys – ‘Til I Die’ (from ‘Surf’s Up’): The lyrics are like the child-like Brian asking the world why life as an adult it is not what he was promised as a child. He cannot comprehend why life is so small and cannot come to terms with the insignificance of a human life. I think everybody feels, at one point or another, like a cork in the ocean, a leaf on a windy day, a rock in a landslide. It’s The Beach Boys at their most profound and moving.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by no.32?
Beck: I was introduced to him by the relatively conventional and folky LP, ‘Mutations’, which remains my favourite.

    30. What is you favorite song by no.8?
Van Morrison – ‘Fair Play’ (from ‘Veedon Fleece’): divine music. It really defies all categorization. …The sincerity of his voice and that gentle piano part are incredibly moving… great lyrics, too (whatever they mean)

    31. How many times have you seen no.31 live?
Django Reinhardt & Stephané Grappelli: Oh, too many to count.

    32. Is there a song by no.44 that makes you happy?
Jethro Tull – ‘ÇalSongs From the Wood’ – The A Capella first section always cheers me up.

    33. How did you get into no.12?
Frank Zappa: My father had a copy of ‘Hot Rats’, one of his best and most accessible records. Still haven’t found any instrumental works to rival it in it repertoire.

    34. What is the worst song by no.45?
Brian Wilson: the EP that came attached to the Beach Boys’ ‘Holland’ is kind of like one long, tedious song. Never liked that thing.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by no.34?
Jackson C. Frank – ‘ÇalI Want to Be Alone (dialogue)’ (from the self-titled album): someone told me to listen to this one track and I was hooked.

    36. What was the first song you ever heard by no.48?
Jeff Buckley – ‘ÇalHallelujah’: I still think it’s the best version I’ve heard, but I don’t like that song anymore, played by anyone.

    37. How many times have you seen no.42 live?
Journey: was it 3 or 4 times?... I think it was 3… oh wait. No. It was none. None times.

    38. What is you favorite song by no.36?
Lou Reed – ‘ÇalSad Song’ (from ‘Berlin’): one of my all-time favourite songs from a fantastic album. The operatic nature avoids pomposity by the strength of the of the song-writing. The brass and strings give a real bombastic and stirring finality to the album, and gives Lou’s tender voice a confident backing. What I love the most about the track are the electrifying lead guitar breaks preceding the choruses.

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by no.26?
The Jimi Hendrix Experience – ‘ÇalPurple Haze’ (from ‘Are You Experienced’): when I was 14 this was the best music I had ever heard.

    40. What is you favorite album by no.39?
Fotheringay – ‘Fotheringay’: They only made one proper album, but what a fucking album. Best folk record I’ve heard.

    41. Is there a song by no.17 that makes you happy?
Tom Waits – ‘ÇalSaving All My Love for You’ (from ‘Heartattack and Vine’): It’s just an incredibly moving (3rd outing for that adjective) song. I don’t know what I can say about Waits without sounding like a crap journalist… y’know – his world-worn voice, the simple, lonely piano chords and the gentle, underlying strings… it conjures an immersive mood and scene, and the lyrics are incredibly touching.

    42. What is your favorite album by no.41?
Kate Bush – ‘The Kick Inside’: her voice is heavenly, and the LP has a perfect balance between Joni Mitchell-esque, introspective numbers and stomping (ugh, sorry), upbeat tunes.

    43. What is your favorite song by no.24?
Hall & Oates – ‘Had I Known You Better Then’ (from ‘Abandoned Luncheonette’): I don’t like the term ‘blue-eyed soul’. This sounds soulful enough to me.

    44. What is a good memory you have involving no.46?
    Dexys Midnight Runners: pass

    45. What is your favorite song by no.35?
Devo – ‘ÇalBeautiful World’ (from ‘New Traditionalists’): a simple but solid synth tune, perfectly paired with Mothersbaugh’s delightfully declarative delivery of the sardonic lyrics.

    46. Is there a song by no.9 that makes you happy?
The Beatles: a tough one… probably 'Got to Get You Into My Life' (from ‘Revolver’). Self-explanatory, really.

    47. What is your favorite album by no.4?
Todd Rundgren – ‘Todd’. A superb album which is frustratingly dismissed, not only by critics, but by most Runt fans. The double album features not only his best instrumentals (‘Sidewalk Café’, ‘The Spark of Life’), good-humored, jaunty tunes (such as the bizarre ‘An Elpee’s Worth of Toons’) and some of his best powerpop ballads (‘A Dream Goes on Forever’, ‘Izzat Love?’), but the beautiful (sorry), rousing epic, ‘The Last Ride’ – one of his most powerful, emotional songs, which also features some wonderful lead guitar on the outro.

    48. Who is your favorite member of no.37?
Buffalo Springfield: Neil Young, the loveable, whiney voiced, canadian chimpanzee.

    49. What is the first song you ever heard by no.43?
Blur: ‘ÇalCoffee & TV’ (from ‘13’) was the first one I really loved when I heard it.

    50. What is your favorite song by no.20?
Bruce Springsteen – ‘Jungleland’ (from ‘Born to Run’): you listen to this song, you feel on top of the world and you see that you’re only 3 minutes in; it has more peaks than [insert mountainous region here].

    So…

    4 ‘beautiful’s,
    3 ‘incredibly’s,
    3 ‘moving’s
    and 6 ‘love’s, ‘lovely’s and similar. Still, at least I didn’t use the word ‘sublime’… oh wait…

If you made it this far, well done, and thank you

    - Liam
