the way they slide easily into DUR-chords nowadays has something overly kitchy. An element which was fortunately missing on their early recordings where they still had much more to communicate with their music. Nowadays it's way too often stereotypes in a polished sound. It's a pity, as I liked them a lot once. But, seems just to be my opinion...

i don't get how i can tell friends about calexico only to have them say "i tried, i'm just not into their sound."...?!?! i could listen to these guys all day everyday. live is even better. maybe it's the tucson connection, but i think it's more than that. every time i see them live they renew my joie de vivre. the fillmore in sf on the 28th was astounding. carried to dust translates very well on stage and interspersed with their classics. el gatillo is wonderful. and i still have the hots for jacob.

Carried To Dust is not bad, but nothing to get excited about. The best will always be Feast of Wire in my humble opinion.

I personally don't nééd Garden Ruin. I could as well listen to 20 other indie bands. Indie bands enough in this world. But there is only one band that sounds like the Calexico from FOW, Black Light or Hot Rail, and that's Calexico itsself. That's why I want more Calexico-atmospheric stuff and less indie-stuff. On Garden Ruin I only like Roka and Nom de Plume. My order of preference: Hot Rail - Black Light - Carried to Dust - Feast Of Wire - Spoke - Garden Ruin

i think Garden Ruin flowed better as an album than any of their others, but it somehow lost some of the essence of Calexico. with Carried to Dust, you get both the cohesiveness and beauty of Garden Ruin, along with the traditional Calexico sounds of The Black Light & Feast of Wire, rolled up into one, to make their best album yet in my opinion.
