Starting Monday the 20th of April myself and my good friend Ross Ilott will begin broadcasting on Thornbury FM as "The Other Show".
We'll be playing a mix of classic alternative tunes, obscure oddities and a few more unheard bands we want to show a bit of lovin'. this town needs guns were recommended to me early on in the year by the hard working little goblins of the last.fm similar artists system and i must say it was one of the best musical recommendations i've received from anyone human, goblin or otherwise. this town needs guns have been knocking about for a fair few years now and had released two singles and a split with Cats and Cats and Cats by the time i jumped on the wagon. the first song i heard was 26 Is Dancier Than 4 and at the risk of sounding crude it raped my brain. the best way i can think of to describe TTNG is "like American Football on ritalin" and that just sounds stupid. think of the slow, relaxing, mathsy-yet-melodic sound of american football and increase the tempo and notes per second count up by about three times and you're kind of on your way. 26 is dancier... sweeps through you like a cheetah, with it's rollercoastering(real word)(?) bassline (one of the few basslines that's so interesting-in-it's-own-right, or as i call it having "the geddy factor", i could recall enough to hum on it's own), tight, intricate drums, soaring vocals and some of the most ridiculous guitar playing i've ever experienced. guitarist tim collis takes all the twinkly melody that everyone loved about american football, combines it with sophisticated progressive elements and still manages to keep the whole thing brilliantly tuneful and wrapped around the other instruments. TTNG sort of feel like the next evolutionary stage of the indie-mathy-poppy sound pioneered by the kinsella brothers back in the days of Cap'n Jazz and now i sound really nerdy but that's how it sounds to me and there are a whole host of british bands doing that right now (Pennies, Tubelord, blahblahblah..) On to the actual album and the first thing i noticed was that it's much more subdued than the singles and split songs. unlike previous offerings such as "denial adams" or the fantastically titled "wanna come back to my room and listen to some belle and sebastian?" at absolutely no point in this album does the band break into distortion territory. the more i think about it, the more i realize that collis is probably one of my favorite guitarists ever. the way he manages to make the songs sound so full without any kind of effects is just... i feel myself getting a man crush. there's a lot going on in these songs (the drummer has moved into full on jazz territory this time around giving us even more ridiculous instrumentation to get our fragile noggins around) and a new listener will most probably be a bit bemused on the first listen but it doesn't stop it from being an immensely great debut. go get it. now!

Lemuria - Get Better

this was actually the first album i brought all year. i found about this band when they were mentioned in mitch clem's wonderful online comic Nothing Nice To Say and liked their split with The Ergs! enough to do something i can't normally be arsed to do, make an international postal order! to my annoyance the record was released over here on Banquet Records some six months later but hey ho.. i've been dipping into this album constantly since january and it hasn't got anyware near boring. lemuria play an infectious blend of melancholy indie pop and Discount-esq pop punk. meaning it's catchier than the common cold and pretty well written as well. lyrically the record is generally gloomy but it also has an overriding hopeful vibe backed up by loud punky chord progressions, danceable rhythms and the adorable vocals of guitarist sheena ozzella. it's in a whole league above their older material and well worth checking out if you're a fan of traditional pop punk.

The All New Adventures Of Us - Best Loved Goodnight Tales
One Little Indian Records

i'm kind of bored of writing now so i'm gonna make the last two brief. The All New Adventures Of Us are an indie-pop band from Dundee (or Northampton), Scotland (or England, thank you adamoo). I genuinely can't remember how i found out about them. Best Loved Goodnight Tales is a lovely little album full of bouncy pop belters and slow twinkly ballads, all with brilliantly witty lyrics. It also has two 8 minute songs if you're into that kind of thing.

best tracks: The Art Of The High Five, Firetruck (Doki Doki) "Me Me Me," Said The Kite-Eating Tree; As He Took Breakfast From Little Katy which also wins my best song title of the year award.



Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight
Fat Cat Records

another scottish band! this one plays folk-pop. songs tend to start with a single strummed acoustic guitar and then build up to powerful crescendos with screechy-yet-melodic electric guitar lines, pounding drums, subtle electronic effects and the wailing vocals of Scott Hutchinson. caught them live later in the year supporting death cab and they were fantastic, i even got to meet the drummer! prediction: they're gonna be big.

biggest disappointment: Bloc Party - Intimacy
they've gone fully (shudder at the term) "new rave". flux was okay but i don't need a whole album of it. what the hell does "my mercury's in retrograde" mean and why do you have to say it so many times with ridiculous sounding vocoders? just wrong.

hopes for this year: Hellogoodbye LP2, The Hated discography (lol), Twilight Sad LP2, maybe something by kate bush but let's not rush the poor woman, right?
