  • Mix Of The Month - May 2009

    11 Haz 2009, 23:42 yazan jurlacher

Well here we are again. A little later than usual, but given all the crazy animal stuff I put up a few weeks ago I felt it would be best to space things out. That and I'm really, really lazy. A little busy, too, for that matter - between the practicum, research, and Ruth's stupid work shift I haven't had nearly as much slacking time as I'd like. I'll manage, though.

May wasn't a particularly exciting month in terms of music, but luckily that gave me the chance to catch up on the excess from preceding months. My mix comes in like a lion, then shifts into a lion who likes folk/rootsy music, and goes out like a lion who likes electronic-ish stuff. I apologize for that terrible description. Just imagine a lion in a cowboy hat and a raver lion and you'll have some idea of what I was going for. Unfortunately I didn't think of those images before making the cover art! Maybe next time. Speaking of next time, June's going to be a pretty excellent month for music so I'm excited about that mix. Yes, I get excited about mixes. I'm that cool. Hopefully the rest of June is also excellent!

    Until then, enjoy!

  • wielkie ekspektacje

    2 Haz 2009, 21:11 yazan summergoth

Czyli subiektywne zestawienie najważniejszych i najbardziej oczekiwanych koncertów nadchodzącego lata.

    Wielcy

Radiohead. Obojętne, co bym napisał, wszystko zabrzmi banalnie. Lata złudnych oczekiwań, bezowocnych nadziei, zwodniczych obietnic Mikołaja Ziółkowskiego. Teraz najważniejszy zespół naszych czasów przyjeżdża do Poznania i nie ma innego wyjścia: to musi być koncert dekady (stulecia? kto wie?).
Franz Ferdinand.
    Arctic Monkeys
Spiritualized. Pamiętam, że gdy u zarania milenium po raz pierwszy zetknąłem się z twórczością Jasona Piercea (przy okazji genialnego "Let It Come Down") pomyślałem, że tak właśnie powinna brzmieć muzyka absolutna. Nieważne z resztą. Spiritualized to największa gwiazda tegorocznego Offa i jedna z zacniejszych nazw jakie mają się pojawić latem nad Wisłą. A przecież swego czasu byli więksi niż Radiohead...
Animal Collective.

Late of the Pier. Autorzy jednej z najlepszych płyt 2008 roku i najbardziej ekscytujący brytyjski debiut ostatnich kilkunastu miesięcy. W studiu
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
    These New Puritans
Wavves.
The Horrors.
    White Lies.
Micachu. Doskonały refleks Artura Rojka. Wielkie objawienie i z pewnością jeden z najbardziej intrygujących debiutów roku.
    Crystal Castles
    Jeremy Jay
    Junior Boys
The National. Obok Spiritualized, największa gwiazda Offa.
Fucked Up. Hype absolutny. Wychwalało ich zarówno NME, jak i Pitchfork.
Moderat. Kolaboracja Modeselektora i Apparata. Lepszego supportu Radiohead nie może być. No, poza Bat For Lashes oczywiście.
Poza tym: The Field, Errors, Wodden Shjips, Santogold, Peter Bjorn & John, The Week That Was, The Thermals, High Places, Crystal Antlers, HEALTH, Crystal Stilts, Pivot, Frightened Rabbit, Sons & Daughters, The Raveonettes, The Bug, Handsome Furs, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, The Ting Tings.

    Kings of Leon
    Röyksopp.
    CSS.
The Streets.
The Killers.
Digitalism.
New Young Pony Club.
The Kooks.

    Legendy. To chyba jasne.

The Prodigy. Do zagrania świetnego koncertu The Prodigy obliguje dodatkowo fakt, że to oni właśnie zamykają festiwal.
Madness. Kontynuacja nieformalnego cyklu Openera "Lekcja historii do odrobienia".
Basement Jaxx. Openerowe doświadczenia z Chemical Brothers i Groove Armadą dają mi przeczucie, że będzie to jeden z bardziej spektakularnych koncertów najbliższego HOFa.
Faith No More.

  • Review: Casiotone For the Painfully Alone- Vs. Children

    27 May 2009, 03:41 yazan theneedledrop

    From theneedledrop.com:

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone is warm and understanding like a hug from your Mom, and this new LP is the tightest squeeze yet. Over the past few releases, there's been a big change in CFTPA. The band's only member, Owen Ashworth, has been basing his music less and less on casio tones; but don't worry, the painfully alones haven't left the building.

Vs. Children has its share of keyboards, but live drums and acoustic pianos steal the show about half the time. The recordings hardly qualify as lo-fi, too--especially since fi seems to be getting loer and loer. There's an endearing, home-recorded quality, but it's obvious CFTPA and co-producer Jason Quever--of Papercuts, guys--wanted the LP to sound as good as possible.

This is close, personal music; every story more depressing, flawed, or futile than the next. Try being preoccupied with the goings on of an ex on "Natural Light," or being on the lamb with "Tom Justice, the Choir Boy Robber, Apprehended at Ace Hardware in Libertyville, IL." Some song titles are more long-winded than others, but the songs themselves only bring what they need: a chorus, a melody, and Ashworth's breathy yarns of depression.

Vs. Children marks a new intimacy for CFTPA. It's gotten less quirky since its beginnings as a murky keyboard pop project, and maybe that's a change some fans can't stand; but the ideas, songs, and emotions are still there. Ashworth is just expressing his ideas with a different accent.
