Well it wasn't really an interview, just some words by Gitane in remembrance of Rozz in an article appeared on an italian goth magazine last month.

dogmanstar ; Very well said. Now that you have clarified, I understand and agree with most of your points. ~~~ I like that final sentence too ['I do not listen to image, I listen to the music'] - very quotable. I may just use that in the future! hehe.

Simply, after Rozz's death, it became a fashion to love him...and fashion bases itself on the superficial aspects of the subject, in this case Christian Death and related imagery. Just look at his last years, when he wasn't so worshipped or followed at gigs. That's why now you have Romeo's Distress, undoubtly overrated in comparison to other songs of OTOP, as top song, and you hear of Rozz only as "singer of Christian Death", ignoring all the rest. To answer to an old question: as Gitane said in a recent interview, Rozz was a militant gay.

Maybe I wasn't so straight-forward to make myself understood and for that I'm sorry ;) What I meant was, if for "goth kids image is everything", as stated below, the same would apply to deathrockers or noise/industrial fans, because there's so much image supporting these bands' music as well (although in case of Premature Ejaculation, YES, image was everything, music was made to support video projections and stage theatrics ;)). My point of disagreement is the attainment to image by gothic rock fans/listeners stated below. I never cared for the lyrics and imagery as the main reason to listen to Xdeath or OToP. The 1st album has an edgy energy not heard in any of the other Xdeath albums (with Rozz)! Lyrics in OToP, I believe, would please the black metal listeners much more than goths. In the end it's only a matter of taste... and I'm not sure if I'm a "goth kid", but I do love gothic rock and I do not listen to image, I listen to the music ;-)

I know you didn't mean that Assiman - my comment was mainly directed towards dogmanstar who actually said "image is indeed everything" to the bands.

I didn't mean that image is everything to these bands, even thou it's important. I was just saying that only reason some people listen to them is the image. And OToP has this "satanism/blasphemy" image. And I like OToP as much as you do, I just hate it when people ignore everything else rozz or christian death has done. And Roseblood_, I myself prefer Rozz's lyrics also. Eva O is awesome too, but Rozz's songs are much better. When you listen "Dreams for the dying" album, it's easy to point out songs that rozz made because those songs are much better. dogmanstar, the OToP is least goth album, that's for sure, but I think that the Deathwish's demo versions has more of that "punkish vibe" or what do you guys think? Like demo version of Romeo's Distress is much better than the OToP version. BUT! You all must agree that "Romeo's distress" is overrated or every other song on that album is underrated.

A few points I shall incoherently share =p ; Image and theatrics may have been an important part of their stage performances, but I think saying 'image is everything' takes away from and belittles the musical and lyrical talents of Christian Death and Shadow Project. I don't [and I'm sure most others don't] listen to them because they had 'cool' concerts [I'm too young to have ever seen them] - I listen to them because I love the music. ~~~~~ I think the reason so many people prefer Christian Death to Shadow Project is because CD is fronted by Rozz while the SP lead was shared with Eva O. Eva had a strong influence when it came to the lyrics and that may not appeal to Rozz fans as much. That's certainly the case for me - I love them, but not as much if I would have if /only/ Rozz did the lyric-writing.

And I don't know what the rest of you guys think, but to me, OToP is the least 'goth' Xdeath album. OToP was the album that defined deathrock, and deathrock is not goth. The record has a punkish vibe from start to end, nothing compared to the incoming works. The reason for its huge relevance is the pioneerism, the groundbreaking outburst it caused in Europe when the record got there... and the lyrics are funny! They were also around 16-17 yrs old when they made the record... isn't it impressive? This is not my fave Xdeath album also, but I can understand why it's so highly rated: it ranks on post-punk bands most amazing early albums ever.

Image is indeed everything... for Shadow Project: nearly all of their concerts were heavy on imagery, on stage acting - please refer to the DVD itself -, so much that they even joked with it. It was also everything for Premature Ejaculation: if it weren't for the stage setups/acting, film projections and other imagery gadgets the music wouldn't have a reason to exist, since they were "made" to support the performances. Shadow Project was core deathrock, PE a noise/industrial project... so it's not a 'goth' thing primarily. The "Ashes" tour in 85 included film projections and 4 costume changes... And regarding "lyrical" imagery, ok, OToP is heavy on satanism/blasphemies, Catastrophe Ballet on surrealism/dada, "Ashes" a combination of the previous 2 albums' themes, the latter Christian Death albums (Shadow Project leftovers) on serial killers' fascination.

the reason why CD is my #1 artist, is because it's easy listening. You can listen to it anyday, anytime. I like Rozz's solo work much better, but I just don't listen to it that often. aly138, I think "young rozz" is awesome. That's why invocations is my favourite. But his voice in Ashes and Path of sorrows is mind blowing awesomness.

Personally OToP is my least favorite album. It has significance because it was the first and the beginning, but comparably, to later Christian Death (with Rozz) it was not my favorite. With later Rozz, his voice is much more developed and mature, and that's the Rozz I love! His voice is amazing and to me, it only became better with age. Some of the later recording and songs, including his other projects, blow me away! OToP never did that. I love the album, but it's by far not Rozz's best work. He was very young then... and you can hear it in his voice.

Assiman, Christian Death is your #1 artist by a /long/ stretch. If your theory were reality, wouldn't that mean image meant everything to you too?

you probably kill me now, but this is overrated. OToP is absolutely overrated. Christian Death is a great band, but compared to Rozz Williams' solo career or shadow project.. I don't know. Maybe everyone loves CD more because it is so "goth" and you know goth kids.. to them image is everything.

@ yoursorrow: Duh. Of course we don't want that. The current line-up sucks ass, and it's upsetting to have to see their faces everytime we listen to Rozz's Christian Death. How is that "funny"?
