• Today's listening

I've been in a major music fix for the last several weeks. I guess Christmas can do that to you. Anyway, today it was very cold outside so I decided to warm up by listening to some . The public tag for reggae on Last.FM is full of music that really shouldn't be tagged as such (but then again so many of Last.FM tags aren't really "pure"), so I decided I needed to be more specific. What exactly do I want? Some old school bass, riddims, roots, and so I went with specifically music similar to Dr. Alimentado. I feel like I've been listening to smash hit after smash hit! Big Youth, Johnny Osbourne, Cornell Campbell, Leroy Smart, The Gladiators, Tappa Zukie, U-Roy, and of course the Doctor himself!

Dem a nice it up on my Last.FM radio today...big that up.

  • Summer's gone - all the time ...wasted!

    ...no not all the time:
I recently bought a turntable, the first one in my life! It's a Stanton T80 and I love it. It is soo relaxing to see the plate rotating, to hear the crisp sound of old recordings! Ahh Awesome!
With the turntable arriving on Friday, I had to buy some new LPs for it the weekend (I owned no more than 3! plates by that time, from which 2 were singles.) So I went to a Reggae Store in Berlin and took 3 new home:

Tanya Stephens Rebelution: Great 2xLP! The first plate comprises mainly dancehall tunes and the second is full of lovely roots reggae. Tanya's voice is breathtakin'. Besides Matisyahu's Youth and Youth Dub it is my favorite reggae album in 2006.

Ok, lets go over to dub:
After I listened to one tune of the new Love Grocer album I fell in love with it. It is a mixture of chilly and jazzy dub. Just the right mood for a sunday morning!

And here comes real old school dub:
Kingston Allstars Meet Downtown at King Tubby's from Kingston Sounds. There are a lot of catchy tunes on this compilation. My faves are
HEAR ME NOW STAR by Cornell Campbell
NO LICK NO CUP by Johnny Clarke
But all tracks from this lp are cool. King Tubby and Bunny Lee made them all sound great!
