  • More new stuff...

    5 Haz 2008, 02:23 yazan PsyTramp

began to focus my interests more on psy-chill and the more dub sided things...

recent one to note (not all new albums here as i am getting through at least 5/6 albums a week) are:

Shulman - Endless rhythm of the beatless heart

not what i was expecting, lots of glitchy blips and blops take away the smoothness of the usual dub aspects i have heard in all the shulman before this album. Never the less its an interesting listen with some class ambient drifts and sweeeeeeeet and sexy synth melodies

    Ott - Skylon

without doubt the best album i have heard in a while, after the first album that was never meant to be took too seriously (great psy / dub album though) i expected skylon to be another bit of a mess around, especially with track names like 'rogue bagel' and 'roflcopter'. This is not the case! Ott uses his amazing insight into dub and uses his amazing technical knowledge to take us on a great psychedelic voyage. The masterpiece that was hallucinogen in dub is heard again but this time there no remix's, this is Ott's own take on the psy=dub voyage. Still not taking itself too seriosuly, especially in roflcopter (one of my favorite tracks) where a ranting cockney tells us about the state of the nation in a wicked sample that culminates with a phat dub bassline. Skylon is a must have - get it for the sunny days that i hope will hit us.

Entheogenic - Dialogue of the speakers

Old album i know, used to have it (minus a few tracks) but got it again. Stand out track is the abakus remix, really looking forward to seeing abakus at glade, hes an outstanding producer and often overlooked within psychill i find. Anyways another lavley album to let the day flow by in a dubby, blip bloppy hazeee.

    VA - Chiller vol. 1

Jong's remix of entheogenics 'sideways' is the big track of this compilation, with the two kuba tracks coming in second. This is the first dealing iv had with kuba and its blown me away. Really sweet progressive ambient vibes building up with crecendos of bass, sometimes trailing off into melody and at other times just floating into complex patterns using some great ambient vocal samples. The jongs remix has got to be heard to believed, if you have heard sideways before then this remix is a great take on it. Perfect for a psy chill set also...

    The Orb - The Dream

Cant fault the orb, the maker of the ambient house sound is back with his most recent album (think its 2007 but i have had my nose out the dub / ambient sound for a while) Obviously a great album with top production value, does seem to go on a bit though. My only criticism is that The Orb seems to only use one vocalist, maybe this is because his show has turned even more live and he has an on stage vocalist? i dunno but the vocals can get a bit tiresome.. distinct lack of female vocals for meee though!

VA - Gypsy Beats & Balkan Bangers (Compiled by Basement Jaxx)

Class selection of gypsy folk and baleric beats, this is a great insight into the music that has bread more popular acts such as gogol bordello and shantel. If you want that big brass sound, bouncy rhythm then this is what your after. For the more electronic balken / gypsy sound check out the track by N.O.A.H and the dub remixes at the end of the CD.

    Boyz Noise - OiOiOi

Heard the Boyz Noise of faust - my moon my man at the weekend and realise its 'that tune' that iv been loving since it came out but always forgetting to find out what it is. With the amount of shit stripped down bare bones electro there is been churned out at the moment this CD was a nice change. Still not a huge fan of electro but at the moment its Digitalism, Boyz Noise, Justice and Simian who are doing favors for that sound. Big track of the album is the moon my man remix as mentioned before, really shows what the electro sound is capable of. Rest of the album is lavley with nice techno chunks thrown in

Amorphous Androgynous - The Peppermint Tree

One of my favorite bands. This is a big album of all the unreleased material that didnt come out in alice in ultraland. Lots of sqelchy synths, crazy flangerized psychedelic guitar and a lot of whaling 'hippy' vocals. This is psychedelic to the max. A weird and wonderful bag of joy that follow on from the issness and alice in ultraland nicely... yet another class example of how diverse the amazing future sound of london can be!

    Protoculture - Circadians

BIg fat psychedelic goodness. One of the biggest names in psytrance at the moment, the album is diverse - crosses through breaks, many ambient lifts plenty of rolling baselines. An album to show the developing sound of psytrance, looking forward to protocultures big performance at glade this year.

VA - Progressive Goa Sound System Vol. 6

Great insight into the developing sound of prog; trance. Perfect stranger shows he rules the roost with 3 tracks within the compilation with 'eyes wide open' been the fattest track there, closely followed by true lies - are you restless? Amazing beats with big big kicks. Sun control species pull out all the stops for a 10 min. wonder piece which is a greater filler for a prog. set and keeps the beat moving and of course, deeply progressive. Each track drips psychedelic goodness and this compilation is the best one i have come across this year with regards to content. Another decent one to mention is the Tshirkirti festival prog. compilation with a lot of the underground tunes that have been rocking the dance floor recently. Quick note, the sound system album holds a track by Fiord! Antix's new project who will be premiering at glade this year. Fiord are the prog. act to look out for, with the amazing Antix kicking out amaazing tunes all the way Fiords new progressive direction is one to look out for.

    Skream - Skreamizin Vol. 4

Now dont get me wrong, i like dubstep, i do appreciate it. Im not sure if this EP is an old dubplate or what but it leaves a lot to be desired in my eyes. Tech appeal and Oskilatah hit you where it hurts delivering phat-as-fuck basslines to make your bones go all gooey, hight squeeks from the synths stick you on another level. These are the tracks that make me love dubstep, and after seeing skream and benga live at gatecrasher i cant argue with their technical prowess and skills on the decks, utilising the turn tables to full effect. My big qualm with the album is tracks like nesis and shake it, which seem to go nowhere and offer an unsatisfactory bass line. Knowing next to nothing about the genre though this is just my first thoughts after listening through the plate a few times.

Well theres plenty more to write about but vanishing point is nearly over now and its hitting half past 3 (AM) so im going to call it a day, might write again soon but who knows, dont seem to have the time to keep reviewing now a days and with the massive influx of new music i am managing to get hold of its hard to listen through it all never mind write about it.

    Over and out

  • Tracks that got me hooked to (psy) chill

    9 May 2008, 10:06 yazan Heliumballon

Something I posted on isratrance chillout forum in reply to which tracks people got hooked to chill:

Quite some time ago, I used to only listen to all sorts of electronic dance music. Liked Daft Punk a lot (and still do). Listened and danced to dutch cheese (Tiësto, Ferry Corsten, etc), , some louder stuff too. was never hot in holland (and still isn't)
The only thing I heard and liked slowed down was Leftfield at the time, which I would still recommend for listening if you want something different

In 2001, when I discovered and got heavily into Infected Mushroom's Classical Mushroom, someone I shared this newly found psy interest with gave me 2 chill tracks to check and see if I liked that too, which where: A 'welcome' To All Extra Terrestrials and ...And the Day Turned to Night.

Those 2 tracks took me in for the first time. I Looked up more Shpongle material, like the full Are You Shpongled? album obviously, that in the end may have probably be one of the reasons why I abandoned my passion for creating sound myself for 4 years (mainly because everything I created myself at the time, all of a sudden got very weak and wrong sounding to my ears I suppose )
However, at the time I was not overly into chill as I am now. I did not bought any albums yet and I did not look further in the genre. I still remained a dance listener I suppose.

It was only since 2004/2005 that I was actively looking for ways to get myself introduced to new music. Though I've never been a big fan of webradio 'cause of the quality they are usually having, especially at that time, I forced myself to various stations to see what is out there. I found di.fm chillout channel to be playing shpongle. I knew I liked that, so I sticked around there for a while to see what other stuff was playing there. I wrote down a list of artists that where being played, that I thought I needed to check out more and I later downloaded some albums based on this little list.

So I ended up having some material playing in much better quality then webradio. I remember it contained stuff from Solar Fields, Bluetech, Toires, Kick Bong and what not. I had it all running in the background, while doing something else. I thought it was nice to listen to and all. It slowed me down more and more. But it was only because of the very catchy MOS 6581 from Carbon Based Lifeforms that I was really sold . (For the record, I grew up with the C64 and its cool sound from the MOS 6581 SID, and the CBL track just brought me there, even without knowing the title )

Ever since that, I've been actively looking more and more into (, , ), started buying CD's again, and found the inspiration again to continue creating what I had abandoned for 4 years: Easily Embarrassed :)

I wish I had picked up albums like Entheogenic's Spontaneous Illumination and Shulman's In Search of a Meaningful Moment more early. As a listener I got into them only very recently :/

    Chilled C'quence ― Dream Triggers [11.01.2008]

    Genre: Psychedelic Ambient

Lucid Dream | Healing Sequel | Ambiluxor

Growing Seed | Luxury

    E.S. Posthumus― Cartographer [14.01.2008]

Genre: Symphonic Rock | Modern Classical

Oraanu | Selisona Pi | Vorrina Pi

Vorrina | Caarano | Odenall Pi

    Solar Quest ― SolaLuna [20.01.2008]

    Genre: Ethno Ambient | Ambient

Ananda | Entropica Café | Opposition | Arrigato Zaisho | Quaesine

Philosophy | Zen Again | Kahli's Curtains | Water Walk

Entheogenic ― Flight Of The Urubus [21.01.2008]

Genre: Experimental | Psychedelic Ambient | Misc [Psy-Trance | IDM]

Skullcap | Araras

Entheogen Spice | Rio Barra
    ___________________________________________

    Ott ― Skylon [25.01.2008]

Genre: Psychedelic Dub | Electronic Ambient

Эти «новые элементы» нашли свое отражение в композициях «The Queen Of All Everything» и «A Shower Of Sparks», где от ставшего уже привычным психоделичного даба остался лишь легкий налет мелодики, и остается лишь красивейший позитивный электронный эмбиент. Конечно, помимо «The Queen Of All Everything» и «A Shower Of Sparks».

The Queen Of All Everything | A Shower Of Sparks | Rogue Bagel

382 Seaside | Roflcopter

    Filteria - Sky Input

    Drudkh - Estrangement

The first three are psytrance albums, all quite amazing in their own right. Filteria also has a track on the Opus Iridium psytrance compilation that's beyond words.

The last album is Black Metal of the highest caliber, in my opinion. Drudkh, as always, delivers true quality.
  • Blending the Sound: World, Ethnic & Indeginuous vs. Electronic Music

    25 Şub 2008, 02:56 yazan SofaSurfer

<Same post on my Wordpress Blog>

Someone, on first hearing the words , almost certainly draws in his mind a bass driven and repetitive structure of this characterization of music. Unfortunately as it almost happens everytime, in almost every aspect of human civilization, quality musical productions are overshadowed by commercial and promoted artists. This phenomenon also happens in electronic music, one large category of gernes, that consumes most of my listening time. Strangely enough, through deep music searching that has lasted over 7 years, i’ve discovered plenty of talented music artists who seem to be unknown to the wide music audience. Offcourse the source for all this wonderful music was the internet and particularly through the SoulSeek Filesharing Network, which i have been using several years now. These artists seem to incorporate their own personal philosophy about life, the supernatural, nature and space. They somehow magically blend complex and detailed electronic sound experimentations with various world music samples, instruments and chants. This particular orientation to music production can sometimes be tricky enough because it’s quite hard to produce something unique with not too many ethnic elements and not too many electronic sound effects that overshadow each other. So i’ve tried to list 10 artists that have dared to blend two so unrelated music gernes and have captured my interest:

    1. Shpongle
I have already mentioned this UK duo in my previous posts, though i think they deserve a place in this list. These two artists, Simon Posford and Raja Ram clearly reflect by their music, their religious background, their ties to nature, global civilization as well as their both talents on music production. With their 3 albums, and a 4th one coming soon enough in 2008 i hope they have greatly influenced the global psychedelic and ambient scene. Their music blends ambient soundscapes, electronic sound effects, natural instruments (guitars, flute), Terence McKenna voice samples, latino music, chants and plenty of outworldy sounds their mind come up with. Their name “Shpongle” is a word invented as a successful way of describing their sound. That word is used by them in various ways (Shpongled, Shpongleyes, Shpongolia, Shpongleland) somehow linking this word with a world that can only be described by their unique sound. Notable albums: Are You Shpongled? (1998), Tales of the Inexpressible (2002)

    2. Ott
Also a notable UK artist, who has produced and mastered some of Shpongle’s tracks. His talent can been shown through his 2 personal albums and also through his debut Hallucinogen in Dub album, a collection of Hallucinogen’s (Simon Posford) mixed and redubed tracks. His sound can be labeled as dub and uses various sound elements in his productions. His music can be characterized as 21st century dub, always keeping a good balance of natural dub sounds, tribal chants and electronic sound effects. Notable albums: Hallucinogen in Dub, Blumenkraft (2003)

    3. Entheogenic
This French duo seem to have a notable discography, where their music is often compared to Shpongle. They somehow share plenty of elements but nevertheless their sound is unique. Spacey synths, strings, female signing, natural instruments, some key elements able to describe their sound. Their inner philosophy is also expressed through their name, which reveals some pagan beliefs, love to nature and space contentiousness. They are widely known amongst the ambient scene and have built a notable audience throughout their discography timeline. Notable albums: Spontaneous Illumination(2003), Entheogenic (2002)

    4. The Mystery of the Yeti / The Infinity Project
The Mystery of The Yeti and The Infinity Project were 2 pioneering ambient/psy projects of the 90’s. They existed before Shpongle and before the big psychedelic boom of the late 90’s. It was consisted by a bunch of psytrance artists and its main theme was a mystical and esoteric journey into otherworldly realities, altering perceptions with the use of psychedelic drugs found in nature. Creepy and earthly sounds could be heard across the 2 album releases. This project surely belong to the past. It litteraly made way for a whole ambient/psy scene whereas today dozens of psychill artists exist. Their most notable album is: Part 2

    5. Celtic Cross
Simon Posford’s projects always take a place on my music list so this one couldn’t be an exception. This project dating back to 1998 was unfortunately not continued in the years to follow. As the name of this formation reveals the main cultural influence is Celtic music blended with psychedelic elements and various mysterious speech samples. Their first and only album Hicksvile (1998) had a big impact on the ambient and psychedelic scene and is considered a classic piece of 90’s electronic music.

    6. Banco de Gaia
Toby Marks, a talented UK musician has a vast discography under his name. From 1991 he has been producing music, that incorporates techno/ambient/eastern elements. He is clearly influenced by eastern and Tibet culture and reflects that into his productions. He has released over 8 albums, making him able to build a large audience. His most noticeable albums are: The Magical Sounds Of Banco De Gaia (1999), Last Train To Lhasa (1995)

    7. The Peaking Goddess Collective
A newly appeared ambient formation from Switzerland, that has released only a single album in 2007. This project is consisted by 4 talented musicians, where each one also produces music under their solo acts. Their debut album “Organica” was a notable 2007 ambient release, though they seem to be still quite unknown, according to the last.fm statics. Their sound shares plenty of spacey ambient elements, some Terence McKenna speech samples as well as natural instruments (flute, guitar, percussions). Their debut albums shows some very promising newly appeared artists who produce their solo work under the alias: Ajja, Master Margherita, Flooting Grooves, Dymons

    8. Ganga Giri
For me a newly discovered Australian artist, who’s music cant easily fit into ambient or psychill. An accurate characterization would be “worldbeat”, where the sound of the didgeridoo and percussions he plays can be heard throughout his albums. He also uses electronic sound elements, and tribal beats. He has produced 7 albums till now, though his talent built up throughout his discographic timeline. His sound is purely indeginous and probably would annoy some listeners that are not used to this type of music. Notable albums: Tribe Vibe (2002), Beats Around The Bush (2003)

    9. Outersect
Another notable artist that fuses Hindu music elements with electronic sound is this solo US artist who produces under the name of Outersect. He has produced only a single album in 2007, Caldera but nevertheless seems to be very promising. His productions are filled with eastern elements, layered with electronic dubs and effects.

    10. Kaya Project
A solo project of Seb Taylor, a very talented producer. His name reveals his devotion to nature and can be clearly seen through his music. His most noticeable albums is: Walking Through (2004)
