"I feel like Fates Warning deserve more recognition for their impact on metal than they generally get."© Same. Jim Matheos - Godfather of progressive metal.

My neverending love, the best thing ever happened to the progmetal, Jim, Ray, Frank, Joey, Bobby and Mike.

Same. The Arch/Matheos project is killer, though. Ray's a great singer but I just feel like the stuff they made/make with Arch is so much better and memorable.

At least it's very unique. Newer Fates Warning, although good music, has been "nowadays progressive metal with ready patterns", whereas Arch era records were crazy, experimental, abrupt, atmospheric, obscure, truly different music. I also love early FW and "only" like the Alder era stuff! :D

You nailed it. I've wondered about their name too, you got the answer for us. According to Wikipedia, Fates in Latin is Fata, and they have Fata Morgana, so they know the about Fates/Fata, which supports your hypothesis.

Maybe they're saying the Fates are warning, and not referring to a particular warning delivered by fate.

Doing a deep dive into this band and HIGHLY enjoying full discography. Disconnected in particular is so resonant right now.

Their best albums for sure. I love the first 3 with Ray Alder aswell, different style, but so very good regardless. Haven't heard anything after that.

Actually all my fave Fate albums come after No Exit. I only like listen to Fates Warning with Ray Alder, it is a 10 times better band than it was with Arch

It is. And their version of Judas Priest's Saints in Hell is just as good, if not better!

On the first few listens I think Theories of Flight is better overall than Darkness. Really solid record and I love the decision to go down to eight tracks, but with two 10+ minute tunes. The album feels really inspired and energetic, makes me think the guys are really into it and we'll see another album in 2-3 years. Long live Fates!

I'm not sure about the others but in my opinion, stylistically it's closest with Inside Out and Disconnected (minus the Kevin Moore's keyboard work). Though, I'm not a big fan of Disconnected so I don't recommend it as a first Fates Warning album (besides the new album). If you're interested in different eras and sounds of the band, I'd go for The Spectre Within (second album with John Arch), Parallels (maybe their most accessible record) and A Pleasant Shade of Gray (one of the more experimental albums, a highlight in their career).

Oh yeah, this one's good...surprisingly good! The last album was a huge disappointment and the Arch/Matheos album wasn't my cup of tea either (I'm more of a Alder fan, though I enjoy The Spectre Within and Awaken The Guardian records respectively). This is the album I've been waiting for since FWX. :) Songs are memorable, technical and heavy at the same time, and the production is first-rate. Well done! This is the first time I don't miss Zonder on the kit.
