+ scrobbled 23,000+ tracks by 1,400+ artists; first track was Gang of Four - Not Great Men, I believe from choosing tag radio for The Fall or Television. I decided to put my songs on shuffle and see which one came up for the midnight posting and the track was was...Can - Halleluhwah
+ added 73 friends (4 that I had known personally beforehand, and many of which I have gotten to explore their music taste and general coolness through Shoutbox communication)
+ uploaded my instrumental music in March and continued to add more tracks throughout the months (Marilyn Roxie), including a protest song against the Last.fm layout change in July
+ started a group (Rimmel), gained leadership of a few pre-existing ones: (basically, i just wanted my own group., Adam Green, John Peel, FreeMusic, Shaman King), and joined a bunch of others.

A few of things I didn't know, prior to signing up on Last.fm (other than the bands, etc.):

+heck, what "scrobbling" referred to, for that matter
+ how much thousands of others and myself would cringe about a website's layout change

Many other important music-related events for me happened during this first year of being on Last.fm. I finally figured out how to use most of the functions on my Korg Triton LE Workstation, got a digital 8-track, and begrudgingly nailed down music theory / sheet music-reading concepts by taking a course on it, which turned out to not be as bad as I thought (though I still have to work through the The Who and The Doors sheet music books I got). I went to see Adam Green w/ Tim Fite in concert, lamented the break-up of Dirty Pretty Things, and saw thenewno2 live over Stickam's webcam feature, even chatting with the band beforehand with a bunch of other fans!

I'm currently working through National Novel Writing Month, trying to catch up on books I haven't read and Japanese kanji, experimenting with photography, still playing video games now and again (only just recently did I pick up The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess!); I'll be plugging along with making my music, and hopefully will be teaching a History of Popular Music: pre-1950's - 2000s class at my former school next semester! :) Despite what people may have observed from current trends, this year has seemed to have a plethora of releases and singles from bands that I already liked, and some new artists releasing brilliant debut albums. I'm definitely curious about what 2009 will bring! Thanks Last.fm, friends, and artists for making this site a worthwhile place for music and community.

taky jeste jsem se rozhodla nezahrnout veci z posledni doby, protoze i kdyz si ted myslim, ze neni nic lepsiho nez Hank Williams III, Paramount Styles, Dan Sartain nebo A Storm of Light (ktery jsem nicmene diky svymu momentalnimu "kantry obdobi" neslysela docela dlouho), je asi predcasne tomu davat nalepku trvalych hodnot, teda aspon ja si to nedovolim. nehlede na to, ze konkretne s temahle jmenama prudim kazdeho na potkani, tudiz uz to vsichni beztak znaj. lidi na internetu (uzivatele last.fm zvlaste) jsou chytry jako vopice, cili nemam iluze, ze tenhle vyber bude nejak extremne objevny, ale aspon nikomu necpu Animal Collective. bude uspech, kdyz tam treba najdete jednu desku, co neznate (krome van hendrixove, ktera slysela vsechno, ostatne to sama slozila a vydala). no a na zaver, resp. na zaver uvodu, je na miste omluvit se za pripadne zhusta neodborne, neumetelske a obcas pateticke komentare, vyplyvajici ze skutecnosti, ze s tema deskama neumim jinak nez v rukavickach. protoze sou tak desne pekny!

Frank Black Francis & Two Pale Boys (2004)
na zacatek jsem nechtela nikoho urazit ani odradit, zejo. kdo je Francis je jasny, ti dalsi kuci jsou Andy a Keith (ne ja - pozn. Moon), chlapici s trubkou a kytarou. spolecne predelali par klasik od Pixies v ramci nejake Blackovy retrospektivy k reunionu kapely. prvni z tech dvou cedecek jsou demace, ale to uz je zas docela nuda, tohle druhe je naprosto epochalni. jako fakt. ujety, ale strasne dobry. upozornuju, ze to neni nic jako Frank Black and the Catholics, je tam trubka a spousta elektronickych picovin, echa, samply a tak. je to velka reglace. >> tinyurl.com/6akwaf

Lou Reed & John Cale - Songs For Drella (1990)
tohle je album, ktere vzniklo, kdyz se spolu ti dva pablbove (rozumejte Reed a Cale) jeste bavili. taky si myslim, ze zpusobilo, ze nikdy nedoslo k reunionu Velvetu, ale za to bych ruku do ohne uz nedala. deska je koncept, je to venovani Andymu Warholovi, ktery v te dobe (1987) umrel, byl to jejich kamarad a je to z toho hodne znat. album ma hodne komorni, horkosladkou atmosferu a fakt ho udelali jen ve dvou, Reed zpival a hral na kytaru a Cale zpival a zhral na klavir a (fantasticky) na violu. je tam spousta vtipnejch a taky spousta smutnejch momentu. fakt pekny od zacatku do konce. >> tinyurl.com/6fj6ey

Morphine - Cure for Pain (1993)
tahle kapela je slavna diky tomu, ze jeji frontman Mark Sandman pouzival specialni dvoustrunovou basu (hrali bez kytary v nastrojovem slozeni basa-bici-saxofon), mel nadhernej hlubokej hlas a v roce 1999 zemrel na zastavu srdce primo na podiu, myslim, ze v Rime. to je smutnej pribeh. Casanova, projekt Isaaka Brocka, sem davam to sem pro jistotu. je to lepsi, nez co kdy udelal s Modest Mouse a to jsou kurva dobry veci! hehe to lidi nemaji radi kdyz jim takhle rikam. Noir Désir - Totsaky (1992)
dalsi smutnej pribeh. frontman techhle francouzskejch rockeru nejdriv opustil svou zenu, pak zabil svou milenku (teda on ji zmlatil a nechal umrit v posteli, on nepoznal, ze je mrtva, protoze byl zfetovanej a ozralej), pak ho zabasli na osm let, kde se snazil zabit, a pustili ho vloni na podzim. ani se nedivim, ze s novou deskou nespechaji. bez ohledu na to, jakej je Bertrand Cantat psychopat, tohle je vynikajici album. rokenrol, ale pritom tak francouzsky elegantni, hrajou si s elektronikou i industrialem (mimochodem jejich hitovku One Trip One Noise remixovali Treponem Pal na skvelem albu One Trip One Noise, ktere taky doporucuju, protoze tam jsou Treichler a Yann Tiersen a Télépopmusik a podobna smetanka). no a pak jeste politologove mezi nami oceni nazev desky, ktery odkazuje k Zapatovi. >> tinyurl.com/5l6pr9

Mclusky - My Pain and Sadness is More Sad and Painful than Yours (2000)
musela jsem to sem dat, protoze mam pocit, ze me vubec neposlouchate. mclusky jsou nejoblibenejsi kapela Boba Westona od Shellac a taky asi moje. (po Shellac, chce se rict, hehehe.) nicmene tohle je skvely. Falkous rikal, ze to vlastne neni album, ale sbirka demacu; v tom pripade jsou mclusky nejlepsi na svete. je to paradni malinko noisy rokenrol, rychly uderny pisnicky, DESNE VTIPNY texty a kratky melodie, ktere konci v tu spravnou chvili. jejich nejlepsi deska je nasledujici mclusky Do Dallas, ale tahle je fakt roztomila a Falkous ma jeste takovej mladej hlas. skoda, ze mclusky uz nejsou, ted jsou Future Of The Left, coz je taky prima, ale ne jako mclusky. >> tinyurl.com/5t4kbo

well hell. stoji to strasne prace mit tyhle psychopaty rad, a kdyz se to jednou podari, uplne vas to znici. prvni dve desky byly super, mozna trochu moc velkej bordel (moc velkej na to, aby se to ve skutecnosti dalo doporucit), ale tady to vsechno nabralo uplne epicky rozmery. no. co bych tak o tehle desce rekla? je hnusna. jakykoliv naznak melodie je okamzite znasilnen, rozctvrcen kuchynskym nozem a zakopan ve sklepe. konecne kurva taky nejakej metal. a jakej metal. tohle je projekt justina broadricka, co ted momentalne funguje jako Jesu nebo Final (uplnej, ale UPLNEJ ambient) a Techno Animal, ale tohle jsem tedka uz nikde nenasla, v jaky fazi se nachazi. Streetcleaner je prvni velka deska, masakr, apokalypsa. neni to jen metal, je tam spousta industrialu a programovani (bici) a experimentu s elektronikou a fakt husty vokaly. a je to fakt cernocerna temnota. mimochodem a z te dalsi stovky nahravek je maloktera slaba. ale tahle je nejlepsi. >> tinyurl.com/6ks7s4

Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs (1970)
Pink Floyd jsou vicemene tak trochu blbost a je tezke najit nejaky song, kde by si aspon trochu nezaonanovali. plus Waters je kreten a zaslouzil by nakopat do prdele. kazdopadne meli par svetlejch momentu, treba ty se Sydem (nebo, pro zmenu, pro Syda). no a tohle je Sydova debutova solovka, mimochodem dost skvela. je to jednoduchy a jasny a obcas srandovne hipizacky a jinde takovy smutne romanticky. a tohle je vtipny: ...a close listen to several tracks [in particular "No Good Trying" and "Love You"] will reveal the backing band hovering uncertainly here, or being caught off-guard by a chord change there. nekdo rika, ze Tar to hrozne posrali, kdyz odesli od Amphetamine Reptile k Touch & Go. jako jo, treba Jackson (1991) je skvela deska, hodne bordelu a hodne noise, ale na Toast maji ty pisnicky vetsi rad a pritom jsou to porad Tar. (ted jsem si vzpomnela, ze jsou znami tim, ze pouzivaji nejake specialni aluminiove kytary, to mi jednou rikal Aran. ten je vam chytrej jak vopice, pokud jde o kapely Amrepu. a T&G vlastne taky.) maji paradni bici, to je asi prvni, ceho si vsimnete. nechapu, ze tahle parta byla vzdycky zastrcena nekde v hajzlu. veci jako Barry White nebo Clincher jsou hitovky jako svine a kazdej by to mel znat a mit rad. >> tinyurl.com/6b5gk3

Neurosis & Tribes of Neurot - Times Of Grace/Grace (1999)
predpokladam, ze se shodneme na tom, ze Neurosis jsou naprosto zasadni kapela, ktera na co sahne, to se promeni ve zlato. konkretne zde se stal zazrak, ze prekonali desku Through Silver In Blood, a to je KURVA DOBRA DESKA! uz jsem o nich psala asi tisickrat, tady mimochodem taky. dokonce i o tyhle konkretni nahravce jsem psala. ano i tady. neni to deska, jsou to dve desky designovane pro simultanni poslech. je strasne dobry, kdyz znate samotnou Times of Grace, protoze to je pak uplne jiny, spousta novejch, desivejch, smutnejch zvuku. nadhernej, krasnej kouzelnej metal. z cely tyhle post-metalovy sceny zdaleka nejlepsi. viz lonska deska Given to the Rising, to je dalsi dukaz. ale Times of Grace zustava nahore. >> tinyurl.com/5fdtm9

tak tady zas mohli bejt The Black Heart Procession, pac zejmena jejich 1 je UPLNE FANTASTICKA, ale to vsichni asi vi. 3MP jsou ctyrka ze San Diega, a kdyz je kapela ze San Diega, tak zkratka nemuze bejt spatna, hehe. no, takhle neni spatna taky proto, ze v ni hrali Zach Smith z Pinback, uz jednou zmineny Pall Jenkins a Tobias Nathaniel z Black Hearts a jeste jeden bubenik. no. takze tohle bude snadny, tahle kapela zni zkratka jako to nejlepsi z Black Heart Procession a Pinback. vic kytar, ne tak ponura atmosfera. ale naprosto uzasny aranze, nadhernej vokal, kdyz jsme u toho i texty, a takovy jako, aaaaaaaah, rozpeti kridel. to si rozhodne poslechnete, tohle taky musi mit rad kazdej. neverim ze ne. kazdopadne se meli dat tedka nedavno dohromady. a Black Hearts novou desku. jo kez by. >> tinyurl.com/6xd8oa

Michael Gira - Drainland (1995)
zvuk napul cesty mezi Swans a The Angels of Light. Gira je genius a tohle je prvni deska po rozpadu labuti a prvni po rozchodu s Jarboe. je tam spousta odkazu na starsi veci, a spousta indicii toho, kam bude smerovat. a pritom nejde o zadny veci mimo natoz "napul" - pro me je tahle deska asi, hm, nejlepsi z Girovy diskografie. jako The Great Annihilator je masakr, to jo. ale Drainland... to je nadhera. >> tinyurl.com/63yoz9
