The first few seconds of The Ascension are so intense. Lesson No. 2 is such a perfect opener. I love those drummmzzz. What an album.

Very similar, much closer to that album than anything else he's made since I'd say - "The Spectacular Commodity" style riffing and crescendos. I can't remember too many specifics from the music (wish I'd brought my camera!), mainly Branca wildly conducting and the crowd going mental at the end. Good times.

The sequel. I'm interested. Even though when I think of sequels I think of bad movie sequels.

He was pretty much the first person ever to play post-rock and should be credited for it. Monty, if you want something similar to The Ascension, get Lesson No. 1. His symphonies are very interesting, but totally different. I'd recommend to check out some stuff by Rhys Chatham as well that are in the same vein, at least check out Drastic Classism and Guitar Trio (songs). Must've inspired Branca a whole lot.

tiosoda, experimental music on mtv means commercial crap covered with experimentalist aesthetics. well, and magazines isn't a thing that must be afraid of art, right? if u wanna change society, try putting yourself into politics, not into deviantart shit.

TioSoda, music is just a sequence of notes and various forms of expression. It doesn't have to communicate anything but itself. Feel into it, you either get it or don't. But going around telling how Branca is childish because he's giving you a clean sheet of paper for you to fill instead of a revolutionary world changing pamphlet for context is the real childish thing here.

@WhoMadeCookies: how anyone should inform you about a group without sending it somewhere? no argument.

I found some great other stuff of branca: take a listen to augustus... I really like the album The World Upside Down he made with glen cortese... the guy who made the morrowind (game) soundtrack must have stolen a lot from this album.... Symphony 3 is also great.

DNA, Mars, and James Chance & the Contortions are pretty similar to Branca, and This Heat to a lesser extent. I don't know about any of the others.

I don't think it sounds very similar at all to stuff like Mars, DNA, Contortions and Teenage Jesus & The Jerks. I actually haven't heard Sonic Youth's first couple of albums, but I've been planning to for some while... also thank you andredmcosta, I will check out those.
