Eylül 2011I'm happier with the 6 minutes of 'Clean Living' than I am with the countless accumulated hours of most musicians careers.

Riffdissonance şunu yazdı:
Eylül 2011This is about quality. But it is also about quantity - because that's music - something, what is stretched in time. We shouldn't separate this elements. The lack of the first factor leaves the listener in indifference, the lack of the second brings no satisfaction (that is my point). <<< such nonsene and strawman arguments. I think if you check this whole shoutbox, you won't find anyone else complaining about the length of Grails' albums, or feeling 'ripped off', so it seems to be your hang up. Equating the merit of art with the size or length of it, is so laughable and childish to really warrant no response....though we have humoured you so far.

Eylül 2011Capitalism and pandering to the majority will cause music to become stale and die. You'll have zero progression in music if you allow the market to influence how music should sound. Just because we now have the means to hold more music on a disc than previous recording methods doesn't mean we should fill it up "just because". It's about creative vision and artists shouldn't have to tamper and come up with contrived music to amend their vision in order to pander to capitalist tendency.
-
YeshuaTheGreat şunu yazdı:
Eylül 2011What about Jazz? Jazz records, majority wise, were never long. I'm sure Jazz fans don't turn on Birth Of The Cool and upon the disc stopping think to themselves, "Yeah it was good, but not worth the sticker price because it was only 30 minutes long." Get serious; that doesn't happen. People actually appreciate the skill that these compositions take. You can't just churn out a bunch of compositions like it's nothing and have great quality across the board, especially when it comes to high art genres. If we're going to sit around judging how good an album is based on "how much quantity we get for what we're paying" we might as well hang art up as dead. I don't see how it is far fetched at all to say that making an album full of filler has a bad influence for the album? That's one of the main complaints by most music critics: It kills the flow of the album and it bogs down the overall experience, just to please your marketing sensibilities? I don't think so.
-
YeshuaTheGreat şunu yazdı:
Eylül 2011It technically is a product, yes, but I don't think Grails went into making Post-Rock with the focus of their music being a product. It's forced to be a product only because they live in a Capitalist society, which, in order to make a living doing something you are forced to make it into a product. Art itself is typically not created solely to be a product.. There is a distinction. Your argument that one feels no satisfaction when there isn't a large amount of songs is not an argument unless backed with some sort of data. Historically, I'm quite positive people weren't upset at the end of a symphony going, "Is Beethoven serious? It was only four parts long!" You have to realise some genres like Death Metal for instance were based majority wise around 30 minute albums that all had 10 or less songs on them. They are considered classics and favorites by many and the fans are certainly satisfied. Nobody has a go at Beatles albums when those were short in duration.

YeshuaTheGreat şunu yazdı:
Eylül 2011I'm quite happy when bands make short albums that don't overstay their welcome. There isn't any point in stuffing an album full of more songs just so the consumer feels like they are getting "more". This is art, not a product. Do you judge your favorite paintings by the number of brushstrokes? It isn't about the quantity at all, it is about the quality of the music. I feel like people have lost this idea and instead now buy everything in quantity for cheaper or the same price that are inferior in quality instead of buying the quality items.

Eylül 2011You pay $13 for 30 minutes music. (Compare with Lateralus - nearly 80 minutes, $14). Still thinking this is fair? << That's silly logic, given that you've ignored my earlier main point that too many bands make overly long albums, which outstay their welcome. I would definitely rather hear a quality 30 min Grails album, than two shite 75 min ones. And I'm pretty sure they know what's best for Grails...
