  • Why Black Sabbath is the best metal band in the world

    27 Ara 2009, 22:55 yazan nicoinfurs

Anyone who took a little time to read about the origins of popular heavy metal music will undoubtedly agree that Black Sabbath is the core of anything that is ever related to it. Sure, Deep Purple and Lep Zeppelin (don't forget Blue Cheer, Grand Funk Railroad and many more) popularized the "hard" way of blues rock, but all those bands layered on already existing blues scales. It created something that was simply called "hard rock", but also the non existing embryo that was about to be born: Heavy Metal.

It was up until 1968 when lads in Birmingham took notice. Black Sabbath was formed by four youngsters while none of them were actually 20 at the time. Their motive was simple: scare the fuck out of people. It was inevitable, growing up in a city fed up with factories left them clueless on how to enjoy their life even further. Rehearsals commenced and the first few gigs were a fact. It's true that there were actually people screaming and running the halls at their first gigs, only confirming something evil was born.

But what was it that made Black Sabbath different? That's simple, it wasn't only the fact that their music existed on an evil core unlike most bands that time, but they stepped away from the blues and even the thing that was called "hard rock". Instead, they invented a new style of riffage which was later to be called "doom metal". Tony Iommi (legendary god of heavy metal riffage) made one think of funerals, evil, the dark and doom in life and he only needed his guitar for it. Ozzy Osbourne , wrote lyrics like no other in the late 60s, combining controversial lyrics based on religion and death with an energy in his voice and performance similar to a Robert Plant. Their bassist, Geezer Butler, who sounded like his strings were made of lime jello sallad, was no less either. This allstar force of fucking darkness spawned their legendary self-titled debutrecord, Black Sabbath.

You would only have to see the cover of this album to see, that Black Sabbath were definitely different and no joke. You would also only have to hear to first 5 minutes of the titletrack, Black Sabbath, from the album Black Sabbath, by Black Sabbath, to get hypnotized by this new sound of evil.

Now does this sound anything like Deep Purple? It definitely does not. By this very song right here, Heavy Metal is born. It's born because Iommi's godlike funeral riff, Ozzy Osbourne's satan worshipping, Geezer Butler's alienated strings and Bill Ward's double supporting drums, all together characterized the roots of heavy metal music on which every other band later layered on. Every other metal band will lead to Black Sabbath, if it's the half assed Metallica or the legendary Death, it doesn't matter. Popular (and unknown) metal music of today all feature elements and characterizations of the old heavy metal music, things that Black Sabbath created. By this, Black Sabbath have every single right in music history to call themselves the creators of dark and distorted music, also known as metal.

It didn't take long for heavy metal to spread worldwide, it's popularity was rising and inevitably spawning hundreds of new bands everywhere in the world. It also didn't take long for the world to invent new styles based upon it. The most notable band of doing this is arguablyJudas Priest. A band that also comes from Birmingham, brought the glamour to it with their extravagant looks and performances. Creating (later to become) cliches such as leather clothes, iron spikes and motorcycles, things that characterized heavy metal even more. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal was living it's glory in the 70s spawning even more legendary bands such as Iron Maiden and Motörhead.

But why did I actually write this? It crosses my mind how many metalheads don't know how it was created and don't know their classics. I've met many youngsters of my same generation who claimed to be a metalhead, but didn't give a fuck about Black Sabbath. It only takes a healthy mind to understand why, that if you like metal, you can't possibly dislike the English godfathers of the genre. It's like saying you are christian, but you don't give a fuck about jesus. This also might sound like I'm forcing people to love Black Sabbath, but it's existence cannot be ignored for any ridiculous reason you might come up with. Therefore, disliking Black Sabbath, but saying you love metal, you are probably someone who listens to Metallica and therefore (again) ignorant as shit.

    All hail!

  • Ursa Major (Ita)

    20 Ara 2009, 12:25 yazan heavylione

I loro primi 2 singoli per la Columbia Records, "Bad Girl" e "Little Girl", furono attribuiti a Rick Wagner and the Frosts. Scrissero tre album, Frost Music, Rock and Roll Music e Through the Eyes of Love, nel '69 e nel'70.

  • Ursa Major (Eng)

    19 Ara 2009, 23:29 yazan heavylione

Ursa Major was a hard-rocking band that released one collectible album and may have been as well-known for its players as the music they made.
The group's one and only album Ursa Major was issued in 1972. Two singles were pulled from the release: Liberty and Justice and Let The Music Play, both in 1972.
While Ursa Major came and went in a relatively short period, the band's leader, singer and guitarist, Dick Wagner, would on to work with Lou Reed and Alice Cooper, helping write some of the shock rocker's biggest hits.
Wagner also had worked with other bands before joining with drummer Ricky Mangon and bassist Greg Arama, who had earlier been in the Amboy Dukes, the raucos Detroit band fronted by outrageous guitarist Ted Nugent.
Their manager Dennis Arfa managed to attract the attention of major label RCA Records who signed the band for the release of their self-titled debut album in 1972, produced by legendary producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, KISS).
In the mid-'60s, Wagner had been in a Detroit band called The Frost. Their first two singles on Columbia Record's date division, Bad Girl and Little Girl, were credited to Rick Wagner and the Frosts. In 1969, as The Frost, they signed to Vanguard Records, a label previously noted for blues and folk acts like Joan Baez. They cut three albums, Frost Music, Rock and Roll Music and Through the Eyes of Love, in '69 and '70. In 1978 the label issued "Early Frost".
In 1973, after leaving Ursa Major, Wagner was teamed up with fellow guitarist Steve Hunter to back Lou Reed. Wagner can be heard on both Rock 'n' Roll Animal and Sally Can't Dance.
After moving on from Reed's group, Wagner began what would be the most successful phase of his career, playing guitar for and writing songs with Alice Cooper. Wagner joined Cooper in 1975 and they co-wrote the title track for his best-selling album Welcome to My Nightmare. A single of the song was a Top 50 success. Wagner and Cooper would team up for the hugely successful Only Women Bleed, which just missed the Top 10 in the spring of '75. They also wrote ÇalDepartment of Youth and ÇalI Never Cry, which went gold in the summer of 1976.
Wagner, who was joined on guitar by his old Reed pal Steve Hunter, worked with Cooper through most of the rest of the '70s, collaborating on hits like ÇalYou and Me and ÇalHow You Gonna See Me Now as well as other popular album tracks. He also used his experience in the studio to work with Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad on some of his solo ventures.
In the late '80s, Wagner teamed with Bob Ezrin, who produced many of Alice Cooper's most successful records, overseeing the debut album of the much-touted New York City band, The Throbs. The project, The Language of Thieves and Vagabonds, issued by Geffen Records, got some good reviews but the band was unable to deliver the same power in their live performances and soon broke up.
While Wagner may be a good example of the talented sideman who helps other performers build their careers, he was also a strong leader, as his work with Ursa Major demonstrates.
