I've not been especially impressed with the pure jamming shows from the 60ies, eg. the Matrix shows from Oct. 1968 et al. However, the recordings are fine SBD recordings and I THINK they need some professional editing, trimming and splicing such that they form a nice one LP set like the Live/Dead album. Has anybody done such a thing? Any ideas? Could even be a nice official release, would be something different from the archival releases.

Where have all the people gone today? There's no need for you to be worrying about all those people, you never see those people anyway...

That's a line from the 70s show (yearbook episode i think), so it's originally from this band ?

The song Truckin' references That 70s Show, yes. Donna Jean Godchaux was known to be a huge fan--hence her outfit

I believe it is originally from the Dead yes, the song 'Truckin http://www.dead.net/features/greatest-stories-ever-told/greatest-stories-ever-told-truckin - though Robert Hunter wrote lyrics (that phrase) apparently - I've seen few episodes of that show, some here & there. Plenty of other shows make references to the Dead, Simpsons, Family Guy - bands too, Tool have on their last album.

That 70's show did a reference to the grateful dead's song "Truckin'" in that episode.

pretty weird that for such a big band they have less than 1M listeners, on last.fm that is

He might literally be #2 on my bassists list after Chris Squire. His contrapuntal approach to his instrument was borderline revolutionary in the '60s.

Check out Wake Up to Find Out. It features Branford Marsalis on sax. Bird Song has an awesome sax solo.

I’ve got to say Get Shown the Light one-ups it, because 5/7 and 5/9 are probably just as good as 5/8 (or at least only a small notch beneath it), and 5/5 is great as well. Beyond that, hearing the shows in the context of just how incendiary they were each night on that tour makes how special each of those performances was stand out. Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty, and Dick’s Picks Vol. 4 made me into a casual fan; the Cornell bootlegs made me love them; but Get Shown the Light kicked my appreciation into overdrive. That said, 8/27/72, 2/13-14/70, 5/2/70, and 12/31/78 have got to be on any “great shows” list as well. 3/29/90 is on the top of my list of performances to check out, but I haven’t been able to find it. I actually didn’t realise it had been released on its own; I’d read it was only available as part of the Spring ’90 box set, which is obviously wrong.

Okay, changed my mind a bit, their 70 to 72 allbums (with Pigpen on keyboards) are now starting to feel and sound better in my ears... They looked... "alive". I've watched a few vids on youtube, whole shows of their tour to Europe in '72 and they looked happy and alive... After Pigpen passed away and was replaced by Keith, things got a bit different... As I read on a place I can't remember where at the moment, "the true Grateful Dead died when Pigpen was gone"

And Bill didn't need a second drummer, in the '72 concerts becomes clear that he were a beast drumming... With Mickey every beat sounds so simplistic, you can hear the differences if you listen to any '78+ album and then go back and listen to a '72/73/74 album, it sounds so much creative and diverse

As much as I love the live shows and the Americana stuff, I feel like their pure psychedelic studio albums from the 60's are unfairly overlooked

Yes, Grateful Dead, Anthem of the Sun and Aoxomoxoa (which I suppose has one foot in the Americana they dove headlong into with Workingman's Dead, American Beauty, et al) are all fantastic. And Live/Dead is one of my favorite releases in the group's official core discography as well. I know there are better versions of "Dark Star" and the rest of the stuff on there, but the combination of good sound quality and uniformly strong playing across the board on all the material present makes it a great record.

I don't think I've ever actually listened to them stoned. I probably should one of these days (I don't actually indulge in drugs that often; I enjoy them when I do, but they're not a high priority for me most of the time). I do find fully appreciating them depends on one's frame of mind, but it's not sobriety or the lack thereof for me; it depends upon one's ability to tune out the rest of the world and attune oneself to the band's musical wavelength. It's the difference between hearing the music and feeling it on an emotional level, if that makes sense. If you can't get yourself into the frame of mind where you feel this music, you're going to miss out on a lot. Right now the Cornell '77 Scarlet/Fire and Morning Dew are doing things for me that I don't think any other band in recorded history could pull off.

Not really hating, but he is easily one of the most overrated figures in the history of music. Even among 50's rock musicians, he's not even top 5
