Green Day, Amerikalı bir punk-rock grubudur. Albümleri ABD’de 30 milyon, dünya çapında 70 milyon satmıştır ve bu sebeple tüm zamanların en başarılı Punk Rock grubu ünvanını almışlardır. Green Day 3 tane Grammy ödülü, Dookie ile en iyi Alternatif Albüm, American Idiot ile en iyi Rock Albümü, ve «Boulevard of Broken Dreams» parçası ile yılın kaydı ödülünü almıştır. İlk adıyla «Sweet Children»ı Rodeo-Kaliforniya’da oluşturan Billie ve Mike, John Sweet lise kafeteryasında ilk tanıştıklarında 10 yaşlarındaydılar. Kuzey Kaliforniya underground punk sounduna sahip bu grup evlerinde Ozzy Osbourne, Def Leppard ve Van Halen’dan heavy metal şarkıları çalarak başladılar müzik hayatlarına. Billie ilk şarkısı «Why Don’t Want Him?»i annesi ve üvey babası için yazdığında 14 yaşındaydı.
1987 yılında gruba John Kriftmeyer (Al Sobrante-davul) dahil oldu ve grubun adı Green Day olarak değişti. Sonrasında grup cafelerde çalmaya başladı. 1989 yılında grup bağımsız ilk EPleri 1,000 Hoursu kaydettiler. Bu EPyi Sweet Children ve Slappy EP leri izledi.Grubun resmi ilk albümü önceki EP lerinin kombinasyonu olan 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hour yerel bir firma Lookout! Records tarafından 1990 yılında yayınlandı. Sonrasında John Kriftmeyer eğitimi yüzünden gruptan ayrılmaya karar verdi.

@ Idiot: Yeah, but honestly, I don't think any of their albums are better or worse than the others. I'll have favourites once in awhile, but I love them all the same. [I think Bullet in the Bible is probably one of the best, though, just because it shows so much about them, and it even gets me riled up emotionally. oh yeah it isnt punk because they are making money, right? so, arreanging yourself for campaings for dafur e.g. is maybe not P U N K but it is a very good thing. the three are doing very much and good stuff. it is in my opinion normal that you cant write songs about masturbation or sth. like that when your 31. jerk down there.

@ armorxforxsheep: That... kind of makes sense? It could be just the angle making it look shorter, though. @ Idiot: Yeah. I think there's the political side to the album, mainly the title track and Holiday, but there's also the whole storyline to it. To be honest, most of the time I don't think of it as a political record, but more of the "rock opera" that so many others have called it. Political or not, it's a great album.

@ Idiot: I agree, but I do love American Idiot, though. I think it's because it's a lot more than just three-note chords, and listening to it in-depth is just amazing. The vocals and the music itself are good, but together, it's like an eargasm. I can't say as much about their older stuff, although 1,039/Smooth and Kerplunk! come close. But, I still love everything they've done, regardless of eargasmic power. | Also, I've seen the current image for Green Day so many times, and I'm confused. Where is the rest of Tré's leg?
