Hail to statistics!

Another boring day for me, so here's another spectacular blog entry for you! ;-)

I noticed three general things when going through that long agenda:
1. My taste has changed very much over the years. Not that I think that would be anything unusual…
2. I visited an awful lot of Fiddler’s Green gigs. Looking back I sometimes can’t imagine why I needed to go to 6 concerts in 3 weeks. Well, I was young… :)
3. Spending my money for concerts has always been more important and satisfying for me than buying material things. Enjoying music that is played live can be such a great experience for mind, body and soul. I would miss it so much if I wouldn’t be able to visit at least a few concerts now and then.

…on the other hand there were also events I didn’t enjoy, so I haven’t listed them.

Let's kick off my Infest coverage now. Every year, on the Sunday of Infest, many, many attendees fill in the feedback form, with the second page of it dedicated to providing feedback on the bands that you would like to see at the next year's Infest. Often, it is little more than a wishlist - after all, not everyone will be able to play or won't play for various reasons, but it at least gives an idea. So, here is what I'll be putting on my form this year. Well, most of it. The last is just me complaining that I never got to see them...

Cyanotic

Well, duh. The obvious place I was always going to start. For the third, maybe fourth year running they will be added to my list. A band that have still not made it out of North America to play live, despite the fact that as noted in my recent interview with them they have a whole legion of fans in the UK. The campaign to finally get them to the UK soon starts here, right?

Imperative Reaction

I have to say, I was very surprised indeed not to see them join VNV Nation on the bill last year after touring Europe with them for a fair proportion of the year - in fact, it seemed that the UK was the only place that IR didn't play during 2007. Shame - their last album As We Fall was fantastic, and there are high hopes for the forthcoming album due in October.

Modulate

Modulate have steadily grown in stature over the past couple of years, proving time and again that the success of Skullfuck was not a one-off. With new album Detonation due next month, which I have no doubt will result in them becoming even more of a live draw than they already are, I find it inconceivable that they haven't played Infest yet, and something is kinda wrong if they don't play next year at least. After all - wouldn't it be nice to see a UK band other than VNV Nation further up the bill for a change?

Terrorfakt

Another act I have always found it a little surprising that they have never appeared at Infest are these guys. One of the most prominent of the current wave of US "industrial noise", their heavy, beat-driven sound would surely go down pretty well at Infest, particularly as I understand their live show is actually worth watching.

W.A.S.T.E.

Another US act, W.A.S.T.E's brutal sound probably puts them at a level of extremity I've only seen at Infest before in the shape of Greyhound. Obviously this probably means that they wouldn't be the most popular of acts for some, but hey, Infest covers as many bases as possible, right?

Synapscape

Not the best known of the Ant-Zen acts, perhaps, but I'd love to see Synapscape live. And with the fact that they rarely play in the UK (unless I'm missing something, folks?) Infest might just be my best chance...except for the fact that I've since been reminded that I missed them when at Infest in 2000. Bugger.

Collide

A very different band, who despite having been around for over ten years, are only now preparing to release their fourth studio album - and, indeed, have only in the past couple of years taken the band from the studio out into the live arena. Somewhat slower paced, and with a sweeping Gothic take on industrial rock, they would certainly be a striking addition to an Infest lineup. And, they'd make a change from yet another "hellelektro" band.

Skinny Puppy/ohGr

Yeah, ok, perhaps I'm being a bit hopeful here. Skinny Puppy (along with KMFDM, thinking about it) are, I would think, the last of the "big name" Industrial bands not to have played Infest. Skinny Puppy are unbelievably good live, but interest in the band appears to be waning again after the lacklustre Mythmaker. So with, reputedly, a third ohGr album finally due soon, perhaps requesting ohGr for next year might be a better idea?

In Strict Confidence

The only band on this list that I have seen before at Infest, and I would love to see back. I saw them at my first Infest, back in 2000, and they were brilliant (and on the other occasions I've seen them they were equally good). Since that appearance, the band have only got better, with three extraordinary albums, and with all these great songs now seeing them again in the Infest environment would be awesome.

Spahn Ranch

Finally, here's the one that will never happen. The only band I really wanted to see from the first two Infests - the only two I haven't attended - and of course they split shortly afterwards so I never got the chance. A damned shame, too - a unique band who never appeared to get the coverage that they deserved.

Both bands will be playing tomorrow in Helsinki alongside with Beati Mortui and DJ E-110, you should definitely check it out if you're in the neighbourhood. I might go too, if I'm not too tired after tonight.

Das Ich are awesome. Really awesome, in fact. Easily the best industrial band around, ever. But why? Why are they so good that on my profile they have 300 more plays than the next industrial group? Or my partner in crime InfectedBrain, who has over 2000 Das Ich plays? I've been trying to figure out what makes them so good, original, and long-lasting, and I think I've got it.

1. NO DISTORTION
Listen to a Hocico song. Almost every part of the song will be distorted! The kick, the snare, the synth keeping the melody, the vocals... if anything at all will be clean, it will be the bassline, and that's IT. That gets tiring. It really does. And almost all industrial bands do it.
Now listen to a Das Ich song. In some songs, I can't pick out any distorted sounds! Does this make it less harsh? No. Less powerful? No. Better? It would seem so!

2. They don't spend all their time trying to be hXc industrial
Why do bands like Hocico distort every single sound? It makes them sound (superficially) harsher. Das Ich don't do that. Stefan Ackermann doesn't scream at the top of his lungs. They don't base their songs off a half-step interval. They can even do ballads - and do them very well! (Case in point: Das dunkle Land!)

3. Their style changes, album to album.
I own every album except Staub, so here I'll give a summary of the sound of each of Das Ich's albums.

1. Die Propheten. Sound: Gloomy yet powerful darkwave.

2. Egodram. Sound: The most conventional industrial album by Das Ich. Still a very unconventional sound! Uses very distinctive types of drum and synths not found on any other Das Ich album.

3. Antichrist. More relatively conventoinal industrial, but pushing both ends of the industrial spectrum: Das Dunkle Land is a gothic, ballad-y song, while Sodom und Gomorra is a fuzzy, distorted industrial assault. Again, unique synths on this album.

4. Lava (Glut). Sound: Symphonic! Synth strings abound, often making up the bulk of songs. And, get this - it still sounds harsh and danceable!

5. Lava (Asche). Sound: This album uses the most conventional synths of any Das Ich album, but the sound is still totally out there. Sehnsucht is a trance-y, house-y number that retains a strong industrial edge; Uterus is danceably gothic; Vulkan strays towards power noise (somewhat like Sodom und Gomorra from Antichrist and Chroma from Egodram.)

6. Cabaret. Sound: Gothic, symphonic, and theatrical all at once. Definitely a highlight of Das Ich's career. It's also very diverse, with the dark, danceable Zuckerbrot und Peitsche, the almost poppy Paradigma, and the aggrotech number Opferzeit.

See what I mine? They have a signature sound, yet it's ever-changing! It's industrial, but it's totally unconventional!

4. It's theatrical.
Yes. It is. Very.

Think I've captured what makes Das Ich so great?

Fangen wir mal an....

Nachdem ich unmengen an Reviews für dieses Album gelesen habe war ich doch sehr unsicher ob es sich lohnt sich die Scheibe anzuschaffen. Am Ende wollt ich mir dann doch mein eigenes Bild machen. Vorm lesen der Reviews war meine erwartung an Dulce Liquido eine art Hocico, nur bedingungsloser und wesentlich harsher. Beim lesen der ganzen Kritiken wurde mir dann weisgemacht dass Rasco da nicht mehr abgeliefert habe als ein paar mittelklassige Hocico-songs und sinnlosen noise. Ich war dennoch gespannt auf das Album, da ich ja inzwischen weiss wie wenig Musikkritiker danach bewerten wie sich die Musik anhört sondern ob es schonmal was besseres gab. (siehe den ewigen streit der skinny puppy fans....)

Dann fang ich mal mit ner Analyse der tracks an:

Dementia:
Ich kann mich noch erinnern wie ich den Song das erste mal gehört hab. Ich war ehrlich gesagt ziemlich geschockt, bis dahin war ich noch nicht mit powernoise in berührung gekommen, und wenn ich ehrlich bin hat es mehrere wochen gedauert bis ich diesen song das erste mal ganz gehört hab. Inzwischen hab ich mich dran gewöhnt und kann die unter der bedingungslos quietschenden und kratzenden krachstruktur versteckten feinheiten genießen. Ein völlig kranker opener, der garantiert beim ersten hören abschreckt. Ob man sich die zeit nimmt sich reinzuarbeiten muss man selber entscheiden, erfahrene Noisehörer werden das lied aber lieben.

Pissed Off:
Dieses Lied kannte ich schon ein jahr bevor ich mir das album geholt hab auswendig, und nach dem opener ist selbst dieser harsh ebm - track balsam für die Ohren. Den vorwurf, es handle sich hierbei nur um eine 08/15-Hocico-nummer kann ich absolut nicht verstehen. Die Melodie ist ausgeklügelt, die drumline ist extremer und das ganze hat wesentlich mehr tempo. Clubtauglicher und trotzdem aggressiver, weshalb der track nicht unter den normalen mainstream-ebm gefasst werden kann. Außerdem finde ich den genutzten vocoder einfach nur gut. Mit einer meiner favoriten auf dem Album.

Mental Torture:
Wieder so eine Noisebombe. Diesmal allerdings mit mehr tönen und weniger geräuschen, was das lied für ungeübte ohren erträglicher macht. Dennoch, wenn man noise nicht abhaben kann wird man das lied nicht genießen können. Hier haben wir ein intelligentes stück musik mit einem geilen rhytmus der jedesmal wieder überrascht. Im grunde klingt dieser track wie ein extrem guter Hardtrancetrack durch kaputte boxen. Der rhytmus ist treibend, der bewegungsdrang ist da und man will direkt tanzen, aber dennoch hat man erbarmungslose tinnitusklänge die den nachbarn in den wahnsinn treiben werden.

Anticristianos:
Ok, wieder wechselt sich der noise mit EBM ab. Dieses lied ist quasi die antithese zum vorhergegangenen "Mental torture": Sauberer, guter sound, gute melodie und beim ersten hören ein ohrwurm ohne gleichen. Doch wo Mental torture mit jedem hören mehr zum tanzen einlädt, ist Anticristianos einer dieser songs mit denen man sich gerne so lange die ohren zujagt bis man es einfach nicht mehr hören kann, da kann das lied noch so gut sein. Auch klingt dieses lied tatsächlich nach Hocico, was nur teilweise durch die wieder guten lyrics ausgeglichen wird. Hier haben wir tatsächlich einen Mainstream-Clubkracher der jedem gefallen aber niemanden faszinieren wird. Macht nix, jedes album braucht ne single.

Humid Dreams:
Whoa! Dieser track ist der absolute hammer, mehr kann man eigentlich nicht sagen. Eigentlich wieder eine Noise-Nummer, doch der rhytmus ist schnell, einfach und unglaublich eindringlich. Hier wird getrost drauf geschissen ob du das jetzt hören willst oder nicht, am ende kannst du nicht anders als diesen track zu lieben. Auf dem sich hypnotisch wiederholenden beat bauen sich klangstrukturen und melodien auf, der ewig gleichbleibende rhytmus lässt den hörer in einen rausch verfallen in dem nurnoch bewegung zählt. Seit nunmehr fast einem jahr suche ich nach einem genre das sich hiermit messen kann, und habe immernoch nichts gefunden. Nicht ganz Noise, nicht ganz Hardtrance, nicht ganz Techno sondern einfach das beste aus allem. Auf jeden fall mein favorit aus dem album.

Infernus:
Infernus versetzt einen nochmal zum ersten track des Albums zurück indem wieder extreme töne angewandt werden die ehrlich gesagt zu ohrenschmerzen führen. Nein, ernsthaft, während dementia noch rhytmus hat und vielleicht ein wenig kratzt ist dieser track reiner schmerz. Deshalb mag ich ihn auch nicht, quasi der ausrutscher auf dem album, denn auch wenn man ihn sich anhört besticht der song nicht gerade.

Spy Eye:
Oha. Nachdem mit Infernus dem Tanzrausch eine sperre vorgeschoben wurde möchte man bei diesem track zur ruhe kommen. Doch stattdessen haut Spy Eye einem erstmal einen schrei vor den kopf der in mark und bein geht, um danach mit hypnotisch-sphärischen klängen und sacht eingesetztem noise-kratzen den hörer einzuschläfern. Man sinkt in sich zusammen und schließt die augen, und einige minuten will das ganze auch gutgehen, bis das ganze unruhiger wird und sich langsam aufbäumt, wie ein schlafender riese langsam erwacht. Dann bricht der beat los, und die qualvollen schreie setzen wieder ein. Wie eine gigantische maschine die unablässig menschen foltert stampfen die letzten minuten als ein zu musik gewoderner alptraum durch den gehörgang. Respekt an Rasco, wie er hier perfekt stimmung aufbaut.

Incubos:
Und direkt auf diesen albtraum folgt dann Incubos, der einzige track auf diesem planeten der es auch nur ansatzweise mit Humid Dreams aufnehmen kann. Der anfang will einem wieder direkt bewegung eindrängen, aber für meinen geschmack ist das intro einen tick zu lang geraten. Aber die geduld lohnt sich, denn es wird immer mehr spannung aufgebaut, bis das lied in einer erbarmungslosen orgie aus fetten beats und wahnsinnigem krach explodiert. Man ist direkt wieder im tanzrausch den man schon in Humid dreams hatte, und beginnt zu verstehen warum Rasco zwischen diesen beiden rhytmischen frontalangriffen eine pause von zwei liedern eingebaut hat. Denn hätte man nicht nach Humid Dreams seine Kräfte regenerieren können würde man bei diesem Track einfach kollabieren wie ein tänzer der es mit dem Extasy übertrieben hat. Immernoch eine schande dass sowas nicht in den Clubs gespielt wird, wo sowas doch wesentlich mehr reinhaut als jeder lahme aggrotech-beat.

Under the Silence:
Lahme Aggrotech-beats? Wo wir grad beim thema sind....
Nein, scherz beiseite: Hier haben wir wieder ein bodenständiges EBM-stück, welches aber dennoch besser ausgeführt als Anticristianos ist. Dieses lied klingt dann doch mehr nach Dulce Liquido als nach Hocico, der Beat ist schön harsh und ab und zu macht man noch ein paar elemente aus den noise-tracks aus, auch wenn dieser track ganz klar auf der verzerrten synthiemelodie basiert, die wieder einmal im gegensatz zu Anticristianos sehr kreativ von der Norm abweicht. Auch die Lyrics sind wieder rücksichtsloser verzerrt. Alles in allem ein doch sehr guter track, der nach der anstrengung von Incubos gut ist, und dennoch tanzen lässt.

Lamb's Creed:
Beginnt recht stumpf, muss man sagen. Am anfang klingt es nach emotionslosen noiseprojekten (ich nenn besser keine namen), bricht dann aber doch aus dem schema "mach ne brutale sequenz und loope sie 5 minuten lang" aus, nach und nach baut sich der track dann doch auf. Der bewegungsdrang tritt nicht so stark auf, dafür ist Aggressionspotenzial und Krachfaktor mehr als vorhanden. Ein recht guter noisetrack, aber von Rasco ist man inzwischen mehr gewohnt.

Lanif + Hidden Track:
Und so klingt das album aus mit einem Outro das doch recht nett klingt. Allerdings finde ich Hidden Tracks scheisse, auch wenn dieser echt nett ist. Damit ist das album dann auch zu ende, und man ist einerseits froh endlich aus diesem Höllentrip raus zu sein und andererseits freut man sich schon aufs nächste mal.


Fazit:
Dieses Album hat es in sich. Es ist nicht nur eine Reise durch die dunkle seite der psyche sondern darüber hinaus ausserdem ein verdammt anstrengender tanztrip. Auch wenn ein paar tracks auf dem Album weniger überzeugen und man die Reihenfolge hätte anders gestalten können, diese Scheibe ist jeden Cent wert! Da können noch so viele Kritiker einen davon erzählen wie wenig kreativ das doch seie, wie man hier doch angeblich 3 EBM-tracks mit krach kombiniert habe um auf die länge eines albums zu kommen, am ende haben sie doch nicht verstanden dass diese 3 tracks eben nicht haupt- sondern nebenrollen auf diesem völlig wahnsinnigen Noise-Album sind.

Wenn man über andere Noise-Acts auf Dulce liquido gekommen ist: Kaufen! Sofort! Mit diesem Album kann man in der hinsicht nichts falsch machen.
Wenn man dagegen wie ich entweder über hocico auf das album kommt oder "under the silence" im club gehört hat und mehr davon will sollte man es sich genau überlegen: Wenn man musikalisch offen für experimente ist kann man dem album ne chance geben, es erfordert halt einarbeitungszeit bis man mit Noise zurechtkommt. Wenn man dazu nicht bereit ist sollte man lieber schnell abhauen, denn dieses Album könnte so manches "ach so böses" gothkiddie zum weinen bringen.

Wie gut, dass es noch Bands wie die Spanier Gradual Hate gibt, die sich mit ihrem düsteren Endzeit-Electro ganz in der Tradition der frühen In Strict Confidence, yelworC oder Hocico sehen, anstatt mit bis zum Aufschlag aufgedrehtem Verzerrer die nächste Hellectro-Sensation zu mimen. Die dreizehn Stücke von Asphyxiated World in lyrischer Hinsicht eine erschütternde Bestandsaufnahme unserer Gesellschaft, sind musikalisch die reinste Offenbarung, denn die vermeintliche Leichtigkeit, mit der Gradual Hate sich hier einen potentiellen Clubhit nach dem nächsten aus dem Ärmel schütteln, ist beinahe schon beängstigend. Und dies, ohne dass Gradual Hate sich kommerziell anbiedern würden oder in stumpfen Songwriting-Schemata verlieren würden. Tracks wie Weakness Man oder „Dancing On Ruins" gehen gut ins Ohr, vor allem aber auch ins Bein und wissen mit unbändiger Spielfreude zu beeindrucken. Die düstere Atmosphäre des Albums spiegelt dann auch das Image einer strangulierten Welt wieder, die sich in ihren letzten Zuckungen windet, so dass „Asphyxiated World" in seiner Gesamtheit ein wirklich hervorragendes und vor allem zeitloses Album darstellt
