Top 30 Survey
12 Eyl 2008, 14:18 yazan hifromneptune
You have to love the form-filling aspects of these things: a brilliant way to eat up time while listening!
1. How did you get into 29? (Johnny Cash)
Mum and Dad. Blame them. ^^
2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? (Harry Gregson-Williams)
The Battle - it's part of the soundtrack to Narnia, and showed up out of the blue in my library. I quite like it.
3. How many albums by 13 do you own? (Frank Sinatra)
None, unfortunately.
4. What is your favourite song by 15? (Lenny Kravitz)
Fly Away, most definitely. :) I remember listening to this song when I was little, dreaming of having wings and soaring through the air...
5. What is your favourite song by 5? (Hans Zimmer)
That's not easy! The man has written the scores for so many films... But I'd say Honour Him, I think. It's got so much power behind it, such an amazing sense of weight and strength.
6. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (John Mellencamp)
Cherry Bomb! This is another song that takes me back to being a little girl.
7. What is your favourite song by 10? (Joe Purdy)
Waiting On Something Good - it was the first I heard, and I fell in love with it.
8. What is a good memory you have involving 30? (Medwyn Goodall)
Hmmm... Finding last.fm?
9. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (Cusco)
Oh yes:
Montezuma. It's beautiful, and (noticing a pattern here?) it reminds me of a late-night slideshow with Dad and my little sister, way back when I was tiny...
10. How many times have you seen 25 live? (Georges Bizet)
This man died in 1875, a bit before my time. ^^
11. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? (The Black Seeds)
Now that's hard: the Black Seeds are a Kiwi institution. Perhaps Fire?
12. What is your favourite album by 11? (Adiemus)
Ah. Adiemus II: Cantata Mundi.
13. Who is a favourite member of 1? (Runrig)
I am unsure. They're pretty good together!
14. Have you ever seen 14 live? (James Horner)
Unless you count watching The Mask of Zorro multiple times, never.
15. What is a good memory involving 27? (Magna Canta)
Introducing them to my sister. :)
16. What is your favourite song by 16? Korpiklaani
Pellonpekko: actually, it's the only one I like. xD
17. What is your favourite album by 18? (Bruce Springsteen)
Born in the USA. Always loved it.
18. What is your favourite song by 21? (Mark Knopfler)
A tie between
Boom Like That &
Our Shangri-La. The common thread in my Dad, who plays this repeatedly on every road trip. :)
19. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? (Katie Melua)
Something I didn't like! Thankfully, I now appreciate her a bit more.
20. What is your favourite album by 2? (Clint Black)
You're going to hit me, but Greatest Hits - because of my mum. It's one of the albums she puts on while doing dishes: I've heard it for years, and it's almost like a piece of home. (Note that I'm currently on my OE, and thus suffering from frequent attacks of sentimentality.)
21. What is you favourite song by 3? (Francis Cabrel)
Two-way tie between
Le Reste du temps &
Elle dort, with
Bonne Nouvelle &
Gardien De Nuit very close behind. *grins* He'll forever be associated of the apartment near Falcognana, lavender, Rome and tomato sandwiches: Francis Cabrel is heaven.
22. What is you favourite song by 8? (Jesse Cook)
Ahh! Too hard, damnit. *frustrated look* Maybe
Tempest,
Baghdad
Gipsy, or
On Walks the Night? Anything that man touches turns to magic: it's impossible to go wrong.
23. How many times have you seen 17 live? (Eva Cassidy)
I was all set to write 'never' (seeing as I've attended almost nothing), but actually... I think once.
24. What is the worst song by 12? (David Arkenstone)
Couldn't tell you. Seeing as they're instrumental, no doubt the unremarkable ones (if there are any) just float on by.
25. What was the first song you ever heard by 28? (The Fray)
Something nameless on the radio, background noise at first: I only started to like these guys after spending a week in Wales, working with some of the most fantastic people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. They would all sing along to
Over My Head (Cable Car) while we drove, and ever since... Well, I love it.
26. What is you favourite album by 7? (Lesiëm)
Auracle, by pure chance: I was only introduced to these guys by last.fm, and I think that's the one that's played most. :)
27. What is your favourite song by 24? (Tom Petty)
*embarrassed shrug* Ummm... On listening, Won't Back Down. Anything that makes you smile and sing along has to be a hit.
28. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy? (Sarah McLachlan)
I'd say
Building a Mystery, because it connects with all the gorgeously disparate parts of human nature and reminds me how interesting each of us can be.
29. What is your favourite album by 4? (Gordon Lightfoot)
If I had to pick one singer to listen to for the rest of my life, Gordon Lightfoot would be it. He's like all the best bits of childhood to me: love, security and peace. *laughs* I could write on and on... but, in answer to the question, Waiting For You.
30. How many albums do you own by 20? (Amos Lee)
Not a one. I'd like to fix that, but for now... -
Folk Away Vol. 1
25 Ağu 2008, 22:26 yazan Orange-Minz
It's done! After many, many hours of work I finally finished Folk Away Vol. 1! The music you'll find is chilled and acoustic singer-song-writer folk stuff - sometimes a bit somber, sometimes not. There are well known bands and unknown ones with tracks from new or older albums. I tried to range the songs to a coherent whole for absolute listening pleasure :)
The cover artwork is a collage. I used two pictures and some filters to create it. Hope you like it. Here it is:

Tracklist:
artist - track (album)
01. Denison Witmer - I Would Call You Now (Safe Away)
02. William Fitzsimmons - I Don't Love You Anymore (Goodnight)
03. Meg Baird - Willie O'Winsbury (Dear Companion)
04. Neil Halstead - No Mercy For The Muse (Oh! Mighty Engine)
05. Iron & Wine - Communion Cups and Someone's Coat (Passing Afternoon EP)
06. Birch Book - The Wandering Boy (Fortune & Folly)
07. Olivia Chrestomanci - The Old North Bridge (Eulogy For Dead Languages)
08. Joe Prudy - St. Lawrence Spits (Julie Blue)
09. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Black (I See A Darkness)
10. Fort King - Black Palms (Balsamic Moon)
11. Yo La Tengo - Needle of Death (Today Is The Day EP)
12. Leiv Reed - And We Float (Only Color True)
13. M. Ward - Involuntary (Transfiguration Of Vincent)
14. Brown Bird - Black Rivers (Bottom Of The Sea)
15. J. Tillman - If I Get To The Borderline (Cancer and Delirium)
Time: 55:13
Sooooo...I hope you like the compilation and enjoy the music as much as I do.

Half a Year on Last FM
31 Tem 2008, 18:36 yazan jclbd91778
In January, I wrote that I would interested in seeing what music would be in my Top 10 six months from starting the account. I predicted that Ben Harper would fall out; that Joe Purdy, Nickel Creek and Damien Rice would stay; and that I didn’t know where Sarah McLachlan would be.
In April I updated and noticed that three artists dropped out, but Ben Harper wasn’t one of them. I also predicted a slew of bands might make it into the top ten, but oddly, none of them did.
In honor of LastFM’s new Top 15, I now give you James’ top 15 after half a year of scrobbing a little over 23,000 tracks.
1. Joe Purdy (1-1-1) - Still number 1. I haven’t listened to him as much. I joined emusic.com so I am getting a little more new music every month. Joe still is a go to guy when it comes to a pick me up. I am starting to like You Can Tell Georgia more than Julie Blue. Great album.
2. Nickel Creek (4-2-2) – Lately I have picked Nickel Creek back up. I love the Why Should the Fire Die album, plus I picked up a couple of live tracks. One is from this great compilation of Austin City Limits tracks that I picked up.
3. Antioch Community Church (NR-NR-3) – This is my home church, and as I look, they should probably actually be number 2, but I “misscrobbled” a couple of hundred tracks under a band named “ACC.” So, I can’t vouch for the other band.
4. R.E.M. (NR-NR-4) – I saw them in concert recently with Modest Mouse and The National. Great show. I loaded up on a couple of older CDs of theirs and their new album Accelerate isn’t bad either. This feels like rekindling an old flame as I loved R.E.M. for so long.
5. The Polyphonic Spree (5-3-5) – Just haven’t been “feeling” Polyphonic lately. I guess I am not depressed enough to look to them for happy emotions. Their first album still rocks though!
6. Damien Rice (6-4-6) – I love Damien Rice. I could listen to O every day. I recently introduced the girl I am dating to Eskimo. She loved it. Damien Rice is just raw emotion and I love it.
7. Kelly Clarkson (9-7-7) – So, I got that disputed album My December. Just not that big a fan. The quality is there, just not the same energy. Or maybe, I just feel like she is making the same kind of albums. Either way, don’t know if Kelly will hold out in the top ten through the end of the year.
8. Belle and Sebastian (NR-10-8) – I love Dear Catastrophe Waitress, recently picked up The Boy With the Arab Strap and If You’re Feeling Sinister, and own Tigermilk as well. I like their creativity and energy.
9. The Frames (NR-NR-9) – Huh? How about that? I didn’t realize that I had been listening to a lot of frames lately. I love Glen Hansard (currently 26th and 47th with Marketa Irglova). I saw Glen and Marketa in concert and doubt I will ever see a better show…well, maybe a better opening act, because I wasn’t a fan of Martha Wainwright.
10. Dixie Chicks (NR-NR-10) – There have just been some Dixie Chicks days lately. I think musically they digressed on the newest album, but the emotional content and simplicity they use are nice.
11. The Steeldrivers (NR-8-11) – Aww. My love has obviously wained a bit. But The Steeldrivers are still great. Imagine bluegrass with a voice as intense as Eddie Vedder's instead of happy like Dolly Parton’s. Great album.
12. Jars of Clay (NR-NR-12) – Jars was probably just off the top both other times. They are basically one of only a handful of Christian bands I can stomach. Their live, acoustic stuff is great. Great, great band that has made it for over 15 years. That is cool.
13. Norah Jones (NR-6-13) – I haven’t been listening to her or The Little Willies much. I blame the new music. But like Sarah McLachlan, she will always be around. Such a smooth voice. She is amazing.
14. Ben Harper (2-5-14) Just as I predicted long ago. Ben Harper just never was really on my radar outside of two or three songs. I have listened to him a little lately, but I doubt I will remember much of his music for a long time.
15. The Fray (NR-NR-15) – Guilty pleasure! I know; it’s ooey-gooey pop-rock. I still think that How To Save A Life may be one of my favorite albums overall since Lifehouse’s No Name Face. Depending on the day I go back and forth on even what track is my favorite. I think
Vienna is one of the prettiest tracks I have heard.
16-20 – Wilco, Vampire Weekend, Eddie Vedder, Iron & Wine and Chris Thile – Just a quick note. Wilco didn’t move up as much as I thought. Vampire Weekend, currently my favorite band. Eddie Vedder – Great songwriter. Iron & Wine – Got a newer album. Very good stuff. Chris Thile – Still think this was one of the best albums of last year.
What do I see on the frontier for October check-in? Joe Purdy, Nickel Creek for sure. Probably Antioch, because it reminds me of home. The Fray, Vampire Weekend and Wilco seem like they should move up, but with much new music headed my way, I am sure I will discover something great. -
