  • Song Of The Day - 27 Mar 2009: Man Of The World

    29 Mar 2009, 01:35 yazan sablespecter

Fleetwood Mac / Man Of The World / [single] (A) / Apr 1969

MUS1030 Music Journal* 7: Unhappy with the success that came with his greatest desire (to perform), Peter Green wishes for a more simple life and true love.

Peter Allen Greenbaum (“Peter Green”) originally performed with John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, joining on lead guitar as Eric Clapton’s replacement after Eric left to form Cream. It was in the Bluesbreakers that Eric began playing with Mick Fleetwood (drums) and John McVie (bass). When Mayall fired Mick Fleetwood in mid-1967, Peter went along with him to start his own band, and John McVie joined by September. Peter named the band “Fleetwood Mac” as a tribute to his favorite rhythm section.

Fleetwood Mac released three singles before “Man of the World.” The first achieved mild success. The second, “ÇalBlack Magic Woman,” flopped (but was later made famous by Carlos Santana). The third was an instrumental, “Albatross,” that went to #1. By the time of the fourth single, “Man of the World,” Peter’s state of mind had begun to take a decidedly melancholy turn.

“Man of the World” is a slow-tempo, 4/4 eight-bar blues, with additional measures (see lyrics for details). The song is written in three verses, with an instrumental break and bridge between verses two and three. An instrumental intro and outro bracket the song. The lyrics begin with a description of what it means to be a man of the world (flown across every tide, lots of pretty girls, everything I need, no one I’d rather be), but the tone is somber and moody, not upbeat. He counters this seemingly envied status with a cry of not wanting to have ever been born! In short, the song deals with Peter’s frustration with the very success that they were enjoying – in particular the money that they were making – because he felt it was poisoning his ability to live a meaningful existence as a “good” person. Ultimately he wants only to be a good man, with a good woman, and no longer sad, but in love.

The instrumentation for this single is intentionally sparse, reflecting Peter’s inner desire for simplicity. Specifically, Peter’s lead guitar is accompanied by Jeremy Spencer’s guitar on a counterpoint melody, John McVie on bass, and Mick Fleetwood on drums. The guitars and bass carry most of the song, with no percussion except on the second verse, break, and bridge.

Lyrics/Instrumentation/Structure for “Man of the World”

INTRO (8-bar instrumental + one additional measure, two guitars and bass only)

VERSE 1 (each verse 8 bars + three additional measures)
Shall I tell you about my life (“shall I” on last beat of intro)
They say I'm a man of the world
    I've flown across every tide
And I've seen lots of pretty girls

VERSE 2 (enter taps on ride cymbal)
I guess I've got everything I need (“I guess I’ve” on last beat of preceding bar)
    I would't ask for more
And there's no one I'd rather be [explosion sound at end of bar 6]
But I just wish that I had never been born (far echo on vocal)

    INSTRUMENTAL BREAK (8 bars)
[guitar one leads on first four measures, guitar two leads on second four measures]
[complement of cymbals: ride, high-hat, crash]

BRIDGE [full band including drums] (8 bars)
And I need a good woman
to make me feel like a good man should
    I don't say I'm a good man
Oh, but I would be if I could

    VERSE 3
I could tell you about my life (“I could” on last beat of preceding bar)
And keep you amused I'm sure
About all the times I've cried
And how I don't want to be sad anymore
And how I wish I was in love (this line on “extra” three measures, echo on “love”)

OUTRO (4-bar instrumental + one additional measure, two guitars and bass only)

    \m/ (ò_ó) \m/

  • [73] John Mayall's Bluesbreakers - John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton…

    30 Ara 2008, 18:05 yazan Llorenza

John Mayall's Bluesbreakers - Blues Breakers

Alright, Eric Clapton is a guitar god. According to graffiti that is. He left The Yardbirds because they had become too poppy (how dare they!) and found a nice companion in John Mayall for making some whiteman blues music. Sure, Eric Clapton plays the guitar marvelously (just take the guitar solo in All Your Love), and John Mayall has a nice voice, but that doesn't matter at all because this music is boring as hell.

Don't let me be misunderstood: my favourite music instrument? Guitars! Nothing beats a nice guitar melody (Neil Young's Cortez The Killer really kills me each time I hear it), not even a whole string orchestra. There is however one danger: endlessly excellent guitar playing can become too long the same, and eventually boring. No matter how much I love the guitar, a guitar solo extended over an entire cd is not my thing. Just to say: guitar music can be boring even if geniously played.

Well, there are drums too and the harmonica and even a trumpet! It's not that you constantly hear the guitar. But the guitar doesn't save the day either (see previous paragraph). This is blues that misses something, or maybe my standards are too high after hearing Muddy Waters.

Still, some exceptions: All Your Love (nice guitar solo!), Another Man (the simple approach, but John Mayall's voice shines), What'd I Say (fine melody) and Key To Love (a bit poppy, haha!). However, even these songs drown a little in the overall album sound.

Alright, let the stoning begin. But I'm sure there are better Eric Clapton albums to be found than this one.

(Nog even herhalen: All Your Love, Another Man, What'd I Say, Key To Love)

  • One Big Halloween Playlist - 400+ Songs! (Suggestions Welcome)

    26 Eki 2008, 02:36 yazan MoogleFan

I've been working on this playlist since around 2005 or so, using many of these songs in Halloween mixes at my house, for friends, at my former school, events, etc., etc., and often on shuffle at various times of the year. I'm sure there is still a lot missing here, so suggesting artists, albums, and tracks that are Halloween-suitable (or just good for spookiness, haunting introspection and/or dark-ish party music in general) is very much welcome. Even if they're from artists that I have on here, because, in all probability, I've missed some glaringly obvious ones. What's more, if you're a subscriber you can play all the streamable ones I've listed from my Halloween tag-station here: http://www.last.fm/listen/usertags/mooglefan/halloween

  • My Top 5 Favourite Guitarists

    1 Haz 2008, 01:23 yazan Gibson1976

I was inspired by Co-Z to make my own list. His list was possibly the best list I've ever seen, I agree on all his least favourites :P. Here's my list:

    Top 5

    5.)
Jimi Hendrix-Jimi Hendrix,The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Is it neccessary to explain why.. check out this video

    4.)
Stevie Ray Vaughn-Stevie Ray Vaughn,Stevie Ray Vaughn And Double Trouble

This guy is AMAZING on the guitar I'd say. He isn't the best technical player, but man oh man he is an AWESOME player in his own bloody way. Lots and lots of soul in his stuff. Check out his duel with Jeff Beck

    3.)
Jimmy Page-Led Zeppelin,The Yardbirds,Page and Plant,Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes

The List Goes On And On..

I always liked Page. Even before I was a fan of Zeppelin to be honest. He is a very unique player, he isn't a mind blowing player I think, but man I'd kill to see him and Zeppelin again. Rumour has it that there going on a world tour.

    2.)
    Angus Young-AC/DC

Thats right I'm sure you all saw this coming. Angus to be honest isn't a really good guitar player technical wise or scalier wise. But he is a really really good entertainer. There is just something about this guy I'm not sure what it is, I love his style, I love his stage act. Great guitarist, go check out AC/DC if you haven't already. Rumour has it that there new album will be out late summer/early fall reported by Brian Johnson.

    1.)
    Eric Clapton-John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers,The Yardbirds,Cream,Derek and the Dominos,Blind Faith,Eric Clapton

This was a tough choice, Angus respectively could have easily taken this spot, but Clapton I think deserves it much more. His playing is just awesome, his solo's make me want to quit playing guitar period.. have fun MathiasPage at the Clapton Concert!

"Peter Green has more talent in his little finger than I have in my hole body" - B.B. King

Pure Hoffnungslosigkeit, tiefste Trauer.

Well I hope this journal will survive now that Last Fm is kinda trying to reviving itself after the crash this Friday...

Anyway, first artist to write about is Jethro Tull... I don't now what genre to put them, they have many different influences, from Folk to Progressive... I have never really liked them for some reason, but this time i heard more tracks and found some of them quite good, like Thick as a Brick, ÇalNothing is Easy and ÇalBouree

The Man In Black, Johnny Cash, surprised me this time around with some really cool songs, like ÇalFolsom Prison Blues and ÇalSan Quentin... i wonder how he was allowed to sing those songs when he visited those prisons o.o

Last note is "The Metal Gods" Judas Priest. This time I listen to some more early tracks like ÇalHell Bent for Leather, ÇalThe Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Crown), and the whole Angel of Retribution album. But in the end, classics like ÇalLiving After Midnight and ÇalYou've Got Another Thing Comin' are the best :)

Kinda sad I can't see them live @ Sweden Rock Festival (to darn expensive + I hate tents)... well I have the new Nostradamus cd to look forward to :)

  • Celebrating One Year of Song of The Day!

    25 Oca 2008, 03:20 yazan sablespecter

I brought the concept of the Song of The Day into the internet age one year ago today, 24 Jan 2007 (local time), and I've loved every day of it.

If you have been reading along, then thanks for reading and especially to everyone who has commented in! If you're new to SotD, please stay tuned as we move into year two!

In the past year, we've had a SotD from all of the artists listed below (# of selections). With 365 selections up, I've only covered 5% of the sablespecter catalog, and it's growing by more than an average of a song per day, so we're not anywhere near being in danger of running out of songs!

In fact, the nicely coincident timing of Last's big announcement means the collective available catalog is now quite a bit larger for all of us! It's almost cosmic timing - I wonder if this is their way of celebrating?

Yeah, probably not, so to celebrate a successful year, I've decided that starting today, Song of The Day is now open to requests (don't all rush in at once LOL)! Doesn't matter whether it's something that matches my interest or whether it's something I listen to or not (see my Golden Rule), I'll put it onto the schedule and post it up and give you a shoutout. (No guarantee I'll get to it that day depending on what's already in the queue, but I'll give you a heads up!)

    Long live MeTaL!

  • Song Of The Day - 18 Jan 2008: Have You Ever Loved A Woman

    19 Oca 2008, 00:08 yazan sablespecter

Derek and The Dominos / "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" / Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (IV-3) / Dec 1970

    Artist: Derek and the Dominos
Original Album: Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs
Track: ÇalHave You Ever Loved a Woman

The supernova hit from this album, of course, is ÇalLayla, originally and then again after the piano exit appeared in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas.

As for me, my favorite track is this one. More direct about his conflicted emotions over Pattie Boyd, and great electric blues track.

I've always been ambivalent about Eric Clapton. Ol' Slowhand is so good, but he was always so...restless. I can understand leaving The Yardbirds to be less commercial and get back to pure blues. I am glad in retrospect that he left John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, because it gave entry to my favorite blues guitarist Peter Green. Cream had a good run. Might should have given Blind Faith a bit more of a go. But Derek and The Dominos definitely should have had more time, though. I really wish they had at least got that second album done. Who else might have filtered into the group on guitar besides Duane Allman?

Clapton's late-70s solo stuff was OK, but I really lose interest in the 80s stuff and beyond. Wasn't even enthralled with Unplugged the way 10 million others were. No way the acoustic "Layla" is better than the original??

Personal fun fact: I did not know for over 20 years that ÇalPromises was an Eric Clapton song! Maybe because it didn't get as much radio airplay in my time as bigger hits did, but I definitely remember hearing it a lot on the radio during its day. Maybe I was just too young to be able to identify and remember.
