21 Years of Metal.
6 Eki 2008, 03:48 yazan ac196nataku
So I'm turning 20 and I'm bored as shit, so let's arbitrarily pick a "metal" album from every year of my current physical manifestation's existence.
1988 - Megadeth's So Far, So Good... So What!
1989 - Sepultura's Beneath the Remains
1990 - Judas Priest's Painkiller
1991 - Morbid Angel's Blessed are the Sick
1992 - Iced Earth's Night of the Stormrider
1993 - Cynic's Focus
1994 - Bolt Thrower's ...For Victory
1995 - At the Gates's Slaughter of the Soul
1996 - Edge of Sanity's Crimson
1997 - Iron Savior's Iron Savior
1998 - Death's The Sound Of Perseverance
1999 - Sodom's Code Red
2000 - Vader's Litany
2001 - Destruction's The Antichrist
2002 - Amon Amarth's Versus the World
2003 - Dream Theater's Train of Thought
2004 -Probot's Probot
2005 -Dark Tranquillity's Character
2006 - Ghoul's Splatterthrash
2007 - Dethklok's The Dethalbum
2008 - Amon Amarth's Twilight of the Thunder God
Some notes:
(1) I wish I was alive 1983-1987.
(2) I had a really hard time picking 1996-2008 with the exception of one or two years.
(3) I changed some of my picks so I could avoid having the same artist twice. Thus, some of my favorite albums are missing. -
Song Of The Day - 2nd October 2008: Pestilence and Plague
2 Eki 2008, 22:23 yazan GrantRS
Judas Priest / "Pestilence and Plague" / Nostradamus (8) / Jun 2008
Artist: Judas Priest
Original Album: Nostradamus
Track:
Pestilence and Plague
I've had the latin (or is it Italian?) part of this song in my head for a few days.
For me, Nostradamus is quite a hard listen. It's long. It's got a lot of slow parts and interlude tracks. The concept itself...well that's quite a hard sell in itself. The individual songs rarely embody the all out ferociousness of Painkiller, Screaming for Vengeeance or Judas Rising or the catchy melodiousness of Breaking the Law and You've Got Another Thing Comin'. The band seem pleased with it, though, and I suspect they got what they wanted from the album and it's final production. I don't think they got what I wanted from the album though. The drums are too quiet, not taking their prominent place they did on the Chris Tsangarides mixed Painkiller or the Roy Z mixed Angel of Retribution, and the guitars in general sound softer. Scott Travis is still pounding away at the double pedals as he does so well, but it feels majorly ignored by the rest of the band who plod through the material with a total void of urgency. Are we supposed to feel like the double disc album lasts as long as Nostradamus' lifetime itself?
As a concept album, and following just a few months after the fantastic 01011001 that set a very high standard for double disc concept albums this year, it kind of failed to hold my interest as one piece. Broken down into individual tracks however, there are some good moments, of which this one (today's selection) is my favourite. It doesn't, in my view, make it a good contender for album of the year though.
Curiously though, I don't think I've actually heard anyone else's opinion on the album yet. Very strange as it's been out for over three months now. So what does everyone else think? Genius or overblown mediocrity? Personally, with a couple of tracks as exceptions, I'm leaning toward the overblown mediocrity option. I very much get the sense that Rob/Glenn/KK have gone into this with the firm thought that this will be their only concept album and they're going to make it as epic as they possibly can. The only thing is, it seems that in order to make it so epic they've made everything slower, grander and ironically uninspiring. That's certainly not to say the whole thing is useless. If it were, I would not afford it a song of the Day mention. It's just to say that while it's quite good, it could have been so much more, and in the competitive music industry us listeners have begging for (and so frequently getting) our cash I won't be remembering it as the either among the greatest Priest albums or the greastest albums of this year.
Anyway, I don't yet know if I agree with anyone else on this, so what did everyone else think? -

Priest! Priest! Priest!!
2 Eki 2008, 14:00 yazan Jono_x
I went to a Judas Priest live in Japan last night.
Quite honestly, it was great. Rob Halford really sings well. Their performance was so solid. I think that it's a far from easy task.
I checked the Wiki, then I'm surprised!! Glenn Tipton is 60 years old!! I can't believe!!! because he's very...very...very cute!!!(Be careful of what I say to a great player. I shouldn't say "cute")
Anyway he look so cu....young.*cough*
I understood why they were called "METAL GOD".
I think Priest is the most underappreciated great band in Japan.
The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Queen, Bon Jovi....They are very popular with the Japanese.
Then why Judas Priest are not well-known in Japan?
The answer is clear.
They are METAL.
In Japan, the word "Hebi-meta(Heavy-metal)" regarded as some kind of joke. A lot of Japanese are turned off by metal clothes and tatoos.
like I said, I have three tattoos. Tattoos are still discriminated against in my country. I was rejected by gym, spa, pool, many facilities. Because, Tatoo is symbols of ''Yakuza(Japanese Mafia)''. But...You're kidding!! Do you think I look like a Yakuza? Don't be ridiculous!
....Well, Let's go back here a moment! Judas Priest was excellent! Did I imagine it? Glenn looked at me. I felt his straight eye............All right, I'll stop that already :p
* * Sorry my English!! today is lower than usual....* * -
