I feel around on the floor
Unlatch the lever and open the door
Looking down into the dark hole
Feeling around, searching for my soul

It was just here moments ago
Before the snow fell and gusty wind blow
But I've misplaced it once more
Perhaps slipping into the pit below my floor

I try to look into the dark using a flashlight
Light cannot penetrate the depth dark of night
The space that fills the downward abyss
Puts patterns in blindness, my ears hiss

An awful sound of silence siren screaming
Mixes despair in my heart as I feel worry teeming
I close my eyes
Open my hands
Extend my fingers
Stretching my arms downward where emptiness lingers

The air is cold and vacant as I nearly fall
Through the floor
Past the door
Where the darkness sprawls

Fear helps me ignite something strong
Scurrying backwards where the floor is long
I face the door ajar and the pit awaiting
It needs to be closed without hesitating

I climb to my knees and shut the portal
Where something waits beyond mere mortal
Something uncertain, something wanting
Perhaps friendly, definitely haunting

But I have to return to my search
I hop to my feet and perch
Returning to the search for my soul
Somewhere else besides that endless hole
