  • My top 13 of 2008

    27 May 2009, 16:22 yazan strwrngpurple

Last year was the first year that I had ever really compiled my list of top listens during the year. I did it while I thought blogging was cool (for about 2 months) and I did it right as 2008 was wrapping up in December. Since then my list has changed. 5 months into 2009 and some of my top picks are still in heavy rotation, some are not. I even picked up a few new things early in 09 that really deserve to be on the list. So as I continue to track all of my musical thoughts here, I thought it would be a good idea to revisit my list and make some tweaks. Number 1 and 2 remain the same, everything after is different from what I previously picked.

    1. Innerpartysystem - Innerpartysystem: It's like Depeche Mode, but it's good! While Depeche Mode has made some wonderful albums, their carrer since Exciter has been, well, a little less than exciting. I always thought that was too bad because I really enjoyed the synthpop side of their music. Since the fall of Depeche Mode I had found a few artists in the Synthpop/Electroclash genre that interested me for a little bit, but nothing ever grabbed me. Until this. IPS' self titled debut is fantastic. It takes everything groups like Depeche Mode have built and adds on to it. The vocals are stellar, the music is constantly compelling and the added guitar bits here and there do not fell added on and do not make for a pseudo metal sound. Even though everything is digital or electric, it comes across as very real, heartfelt music. I hope that Innerpartysystem continue to make music for a long time, because we need a band like this to exist.

    2. Bloc Party - Intimacy: While this release seemed to destroy whatever fan base they had left over from the Silent Alarm days, it might have made some new fans along the way. Adding layers and layers of synths to their somewhat laid back guitar style made Bloc Party 1,000 times more interesting to me. Unfortunately, it turned off more people than it turned on. Songs like Mercury, with it's droning beat and chopped vocal chorus are somewhat jarring at first, but after multiple listens it just gets better and better. Zepherus is easily my song of the year. It's just Kele, some brilliant synths and a choir that is used to perfection. A lot of people felt like Bloc Party jumped the shark and turned on their fan base. I say they just have started to grow on things like their Flux single. I hope they keep up with the experimentation.

    3. Prolyphic & Reanimator - The Ugly Truth: Easily the best hip-hop release since I first heard P.O.S. and his release Audition. This one has everything I look for in a hip-hop release. Original production, lyrics that feel real (I don't care about your cars or drugs or women) and vocals that flow with the music perfectly. I've found that these guys aren't for everyone. Some find the vocals week and drowned out by the production. I disagree, obviously. This might be one of those release that not everyone gets, but for those that do they are in for one hell of a release.

    4. Upcdowncleftcrightcabc+start - Embers: I know, they have a stupid name. But don't let that stop you, this is some of the best post-rock you will ever hear. 2008 was the year of post-rock for me. I always liked Mogwai, since high school, but never explored the genre like I did during the past year or two. This is one of my favorite finds. They have one of the best balances between the heavy and the soft. When they come to an apex, they really come to an apex. While they have some longer songs, none of them feel drawn out, which is a huge problem with lesser bands within the genre. If I was to get a friend into post-rock, here is where I start them.

    5. City & Colour - Bring Me Your Love: After hearing Dallas Green's live disc I was really interested in what else he would do. The guitar player/singer from the somewhat boring Metalcore group Alexisonfire really shows a level of emotion and feeling that I didn't think someone in a Metalcore band would be capable of. That's why you get for judging a book by it's cover. For the most part the acoustic guitar and Dallas' vocals feel very down and depressed, but sometimes that make music good. Songs like What Makes A Man and Confession make you feel what Dallas is feeling. If you enjoy singer/songwriter's with acoustic guitars and not much else, check this out.

    6. Lights Out Asia - Eyes Like Brontide: My second post-rock release on the list, but this one is far more laid back than Embers. When I hear the word "ambient" to describe music I usually expect boring. This is anything but. It is very slow and at times very quite. Unlike most post-rock bands they don't like to have some ear crunching crescendo at the end of every song. Instead they have it at the end of the album. This whole disc is a fantastic listen from cover to cover and when you do that, when you get to the payoff at the end of Six Points of Fire it just feels so good. There is nothing wrong with this disc. The sythns are subtle and blend in with the guitar. The vocals here are fantastic and fit the mood perfectly. On top of all that, they are from Milwaukee, the city where Kings (i.e. me) are born.

    7. 3OH!3 - Want: This probably looks odd on this list, but I loved this disc. There is nothing original about these white boys from "Balldorado", but what the do, they do it well. Better, in fact, than the artists they are ripping off. This really is a blend of Lil’ Jon and the Postal Service. But instead of being way to serious (Postal Service) or way to crappy (Lil’ Jon) they just have fun and program beats that are great to listen to. I can understand, to a certain extent, why a lot of people hate these guys. If you remove your music snob gear, you might be able to have fun with this one. And please, do not compare this to Brokencyde. That group is directly from Hell.

    8. Mogwai - The Hawk is Howling: Post-rock release 3 on the list. What more can I say about Mogwai that hasn't been said a million times. Their CD's have been hit or miss for me since Come On, Die Young! but each disc has had some great tracks to listen to. I was expecting more of a Mr. Beast sound to creep in, but this is a very laid back disc. There are two bangers, [Batcat and I Love You, I'm Going to Blow Up Your School, the latter being on of my favorite Mogwai tracks ever. The bottom line is that this isn't going to make you a fan of Mogwai if you weren't before. For those of us who don't care that it's not cool to like them, it's a damn fine release and their best, IMO, since Come On, Die Young!

    9. 10 Years - Division: This one is somewhat of a guilty pleasure in that it's really a "modern rock" release. Modern Rock, to me, brings images of Hinder or Nickleback to my head and instantly makes me want to break stuff. The fact of the matter is that there is good modern rock out there and 10 years is one of the best. After trying to be a little more "progressive" on their last release they clearly set their sites on a more radio friendly sound. Whether or not that equates to selling out is for you to call, I really don't care as long as the songs are still good. And that is what they are here. Good, catchy songs with excellent, clean vocals. Listening to an artist like this makes me wonder why they can't be popular. They bring more to the table than 99% of what is on the radio now... but maybe that's the problem. They have made music that is too good for it to be realized by the mainstream. If you are OK with a band that is not original, just good, this is a good disc.

    10. Kerli - Love Is Dead: Pop music is garbage. Complete shit. Even in a pile of shit you can find a diamond once and a while and here she is. Mixing parts of Bjork's vocals, Kelly Clarkson's rock riffs and the mind of rather strange little girl makes for quite an interesting pop release. Parts of this album are very dark both lyrically and production wise, which is why I think I like this more than the pop you hear on the radio. Kerli is just different enough to stand out and her vocals are good enough to be seen as a valid pop star. Whether or not she reaches star status is going to be interesting, because I think that, yet again, she is a little too good and too different to have a mainstream following.

    11. God Is an Astronaut - God Is An Astronaut: I am glad that I finally took the dive into post-rock head on this year, because there were some great releases. While the hipsters who used to listen to this stuff have become too cool for it (and have called the genre "dead") I've been having a lot of fun with my new discovery's. What makes GIAA unique from a lot of other bands is the feeling of something greater than music. I know this is super cheesy but I find their music to be very soothing. Their use of percussion is about as good as it gets and the guitar has a unique sound from other bands that works perfectly. This is another good release to introduce someone to post-rock who may not have been interested before.

    12. Underoath - Lost In The Sound Of Separation: This one was a slow grower for me. When I first heard Define the Great Line I was blown away. Spencer's scream went from a whiny one in the nose to a growl straight from the depths of his stomach. That change right there turned Underoath into a real band in my eyes, not a kind of trendy screamo band. Also helping that feeling was a lot less singing from Aaron, everyone's favorite ginger drummer. Not that Aaron is bad per say, but with the brutality of the music having Aaron sing nice clean hooks in every song got old, quick. So why is this ranked so low? It's not that it's a bad release, in fact it's quite good. It's just that the huge jump that was seen on Define The Great line was not seen here. Their sound remained the same and felt like a lateral move, not a move up. For that, they get docked a bit, but it is still a fantastic disc, even if it's too trendy for you.

    13. Moving Mountains - Foreward: My last post rock release and this one has vocals! So for those who are bored to death with instrumental music this is a good way to start into post-rock. Their musicianship is fantastic but the vocals are only OK for me. The reason this one ended so low on my list is due to it's length. I want more and hopefully we get to see see that this year.

    19. The National - Mr. November

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzhNdCxhK28

A sweet guitar riff as an intro for one of the best closers of one of the greatest albums I have heard in my short life.

This is nothing like it was in my room
    In my best clothes
    Trying to think of you
This is nothing like it was in my room
    In my best clothes

Matt Berninger with his ever so clever lyrics. I love the way he sings this.

After a few verses with sweet guitar arpeggios and Berninger singing in a very subtle voice the song starts to build up even more with

I'm the new blue blood, I'm the great white hope
    I'm the new blue blood

This song is definitely about politics (heck, they even made a T-shirt with Obama and Mr. November on it). Or you could look at it that way anyway, but it can also be that the song is about hoping for someone to stand up and support the people (or just one person) because they really need it. And the person that's saying this feels the pressure on him. But there's still hope he believes because

    I won't **** us over, I'm Mr. November
    I'm Mr. November, I won't **** us over

Best. Chorus. Ever. It comes close anyway..

I wish that I believed in fate
    I wish I didn't sleep so late
I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders

<3. This song is just marvelous...

Yeah the lyrics repeat one more time and then there's a very uplifting solo. This is one of the most uplifting pieces of music (even art in general) I have heard. Give it a listen if you haven't already

    18. Arcade Fire - ÇalIntervention

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZO7ZWfvCjBE

The king's taken back the throne,
    The useless seed is sown,
When they say they're cutting off the phone,
I tell them you're not home.

    No place to hide,
You were fighting as a soldier on their side,
You're still a soldier in your mind,
    Though nothing's on the line.

This is such a beautiful song about losing all hope yet still going on with your life.

You say it's money that we need,
As if we were only mouths to feed,
I know no matter what you say
There are some debts you'll never pay.

After looking at the lyrics more closely you can definitely spot some anti-Bush lyrics. Criticising the war and all around it, hoping for it to end. Yet, the song can also be interpreted as dealing with problems you can never solve, but have to live with. The theme of 'death' is also there.

    Working for the church
    While your family dies.
You take what they give you
    And you keep it inside.
Every spark of friendship and love
    Will die without a home.

Hear the solider groan, "We'll go at it alone"

First chorus, and this is a subtle one (the music anyway). This song really has some of my favourite lyrics ever.

    I can taste the fear.
Lift me up and take me out of here,
Don't want to fight, don't want to die,
Just want to hear you cry.

Who's going to throw the very first stone?
Oh! Who's going to reset the bone?
Walking with your head in a sling
Want to hear the soldier sing.

    Working for the Church
    While my family dies,
    Your little baby sister's
    Going to lose her mind,
Every spark of friendship and love
    Will die without a home

Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"

I love the pre-chorus part (or bridge) here before the second chorus. Especially the 'I can taste the fear' and 'oh! who's gonna reset the bone?' parts.

    I can taste your fear,
It's going to lift you up and take you out of here,
And the bone shall never heal,
I care not if you kneel.

    We can't find you now,
But they're going to get their money back somehow,
    And when you finally disappear
We'll just say you were never here.

    Been working for the church
    While your life falls apart,
Singing hallelujah with the fear in your heart,
Every spark of friendship and love
    Will die without a home.

Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"
Hear the soldier groan, "We'll go at it alone"

I love the last verses and chorus, because the song builds up more and more and then the last chorus really hits you in the head with amazing harmonies. Very moving song. Definitely worth a listen (yes I'm going to say this at every song! :@)

    17. Moving Mountains - ÇalSol Solis

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=easrK231QRM

take your hands away from your face
so i can see everything you are
and everything you used to be
you used to be to me
something you dont wanna be, i know.

This is such a sweet song. It's an honest love song referring to the simplest things in life, from a band that is way too unknown imo. Pneuma is really one of the best post-rock albums I've heard. (no this song isn't post-rock, but the album in general is)

    you, you're like the sun
    and i am earth
    together we're one
    but someday
    your fire will die
    and i'll grow cold
    without sunlight.
    and i will freeze, baby
i will die, i'd freeze, i'd die for you.

These are some of my favourite lyrics ever, they are really simple but oh so beautiful.

    things, they always die
    just give it time.
    but we, someday we'll see
    our love will shine,
    our love will shine.

    your love wont fade, darling.
lover, i cannot do this alone
things like this are better off untold
someday the sun will die and i'll grow cold
i hope someday your love finds it's way home.

(cause you are the sun and i am the earth)

Just marvelous... I know some people who don't like MM because they don't like 'screamo' in general, but most people still like this song. If you like it, you should definitely give Pneuma (and their recent EP foreword) a listen... Brilliant band

    16. Weezer - ÇalSay It Ain't So

http://new.music.yahoo.com/videos/Weezer/Say-It-Ain&%2339%3Bt-So--2148942 (stupid youtube and their copyright rules)

I was doubting between this and Buddy Holly (look out for the 'real' weezer fans! they'll claim Buddy Holly isn't near the top... But hey I love all of Blue and Pinkerton), but this song is a lot more emotional so I went for this one.

This song has an amazing guitar intro imo.

    Somebody's Heine'
    is crowdin' my icebox
    somebody's cold one
    is givin' me chills
Guess I'll just close my eyes
    Flip on the tele'
    Wrestle with Jimmy
    Something is bubbling
    Behind my back
The bottle is ready to blow

From what I heard, this song is about Cuomo's father leaving him at a very young age. He vaguely remembers his father being an alcoholic. This is one of those singalong verses.. Then the feedback comes in with an amazing chorus:

    Say it ain't so
    Your drug is a heartbreaker
    Say it ain't so
    My love is a lifetaker

I love this chorus to death.

    I can't confront you
    I never could do
    That which might hurt you
    So try and be cool
    When I say
This way is a waterslide away from me
That takes you further every day
    So be cool

I love how he sings the 'This way... etc' part and then the second chorus comes in with some edgy bends between the powerchords. <3

Then there's a drum fill and the bridge kicks in:

    Dear Daddy, I write you
In spite of years of silence
    You've cleaned up, found Jesus
Things are good or so I hear
    This bottle of Steven's
    Awakens ancient feelings
    Like father, stepfather
The son is drowning in the flood

So much emotion in this bridge... And then an even more amazing solo kicks in, I love how Rivers makes solos that are easy as pie but still such a blessing to the ear.. After that there's the third chorus and then the song ends.

    15. Kent - Klåparen

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-VnhEXIrZA

one of the two songs on this list that aren't english. Kent is a sweet Swedish (I can't speak a word Swedish by the way) band, I recommend them to all people into alternative/pop rock. I don't have a lot to say except for that this is a BEAUTIFUL song. I'll put the lyrics here though, and the translations.

    The Bungler
You’re walking in your inimitable way
Over the school yard’s gravel by yourself
In your newly cut hair like an Irish idol’s
    Your reflection in window glass
    Admires every step you take

    And so it flashes
    Green red yellow lights
You were sitting on needles when you came
    With your smuggled-in intoxication

And they switch off all the lights, for one final quiet chance
And everything blackens in a panic, when you see that everyone already has a dance
    And everything is like before

You remember who you were with contempt, a little hatred
You start to resemble your mother or father
You have changed your ways erased every trace
But in your soul yes far, far inside echoes the teenager’s roar

    And so it flashes
And they switch on all the lights
You were alone when you came, now the magic has burned out
    And so they switch off
All the signs all the lights
And when the park lies empty you realise that your evening has just ended
    And everything is like before

    And so it flashes
And they turn on all the lights
You were alone when you came
You are just as alone now
And so they switch off all the streets and all the houses
And when the city lies empty you realise
That that’s what your life looks like
    And everything is like before

    Swedish:
Du går på ditt oefterhärmliga sätt
Över skolgårdens grus för dig själv
I ditt nyklippta hår, likt en irländsk idols
    Din spegelbild i fönsterglas

Men i själen din ja långt, långt in ekar tonåringens vrål

  • Moving Mountains, Damiera, In:Aviate Tour!?

    27 Nis 2009, 21:36 yazan Jimofbudapest

SO Sunday my friend and I took a little drive up to Manchester, New Hampshire to check out Kiss Kiss, Dr Manhattan, The Venetia Fair and In:aviate twas quite an awesome time! Well between sets in talking with Ryan, singer from In:avite, he mentioned that in the fall there was a good chance that they would be touring with Moving Mountains and Damiera, which would be epic!

Now you may say this is mostly speculation and what not, however, the whole conversation was started because a group of fellow show goers recognized my Moving Mountains shirt and commented that they were playing a free show in Lowell that very night! Not one to miss such an amazing opportunity, we skipped out that joint after Kiss Kiss and booked it down to UMass Lowell. Almost immediately we found the drummer from MovMou, who was interested in the Pompeii shirt my friends had on, and we chatted about the show they did in the Middle East a it ago. After their set me wandered over to their merch table and mentioned we had just come from the In:aviate show after which the lead singer asked how good they were live and that they'd hopefully be touring in the fall.

All in all it was an excellent evening barring exciting news!
  • Recommend me some damn music

    23 Nis 2009, 08:19 yazan Richardthegreat

So I'm going through one of those 'I can't find any decent music' stages in my life. I can't really say exactly what i'm looking for because i'm willing to give anything a shot. Have a look at my charts to see if you can get any inspiration from there.

I do however prefer male vocals either singing/growling/screaming though I also enjoy music that infuses female vocals on occasion, i'm a sucker for acoustic pieces in the vein of Agalloch.

Shit to be honest recommend me black metal, sludge, electronic, acoustic, hip hop whatever and i'll even be kind enough to tell you what I think of said band, i'll also give a pony to the winning recommendation. GO!

    Recommendations so far;

    Aarni

Sat 28 Mar – Damiera, Moving Mountains, Man Without Wax, Nick Corbo

The Co-op at the Purchase SUNY
Small little place with 4 inch stage that barely fits the drum set, everyone else is standing on the floor along side the crowd. Pretty intimate environment.

Corbo played a quick acoustic set, he had a few friends in the audience which made themselves know during the outro to his final song, was very enjoyable.

Man Without Wax really upbeat band from Seattle, Check em out! I think i was the only one who knew their songs there haha... Man Without Wax

Damiera, second time I've seen them, they are very energetic, especially their lead guitarist, good reaction from the crowd despite the mic not picking up the vocals very well at all... Damiera

Mov Mou waaayyyy to short a set, they only played four songs, granted it took 40 mins lolol but still everytime i see them i pray they play for more than an hour. That said it was still an awesome time hearing them live again... Moving Mountains
