I sang this song in one of my classes in high school. It was the end of the school year, and the teacher asked us what we wanted to do for the final couple weeks. Someone suggested a karaoke contest. So we piled three different classes (about 70 people) into one room. Two rounds - qualifying and final. I picked this song. Before I started, I asked, "Has anyone ever heard of the band Neutral Milk Hotel?" Lots of blank stares, as expected. "Good." After the song ended, it was silent for about 10 seconds before the uproar of applause. I think it made a few people cry, as hearing this song is so able to do. Anyway, It got me into the final round, which I won by keeping up with the lyrics to R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)". I prefaced it by telling everyone "Sing along if you know the words!" It was kind of amazing to get people to sing along during the chorus. My high school life wasn't too eventful, but that was certainly a lasting memory.
