1993 yılında Karl Sanders (gitar/vokal), Chief Spires (bas, vokal) ve Pete Hammoura tarafından kurulan Nile, ilk olarak zamanlarını Mısır tarihi ve kültürünü modern ve senfonik death metalle birleştirmeye çalışmakla geçirdiler. Death metal tekniğiyle Orta Doğu melodileri arasında çok iyi bir denge ve konsept kurmayı başardılar. Karl Sanders’in Mısır kitabeleri, mezar oymacılığı, papirüs, hiyeroglif (resimyazı), Mısır’ın savaşları, dinsel törenleri ve töreleri ile ilgili yazdığı harika lirikler de bu müziğin içine girince ortaya tadından yenmeyen bambaşka bir sound çıktı. Grup, bazı şarkı sözlerini gotik edebiyatın en önemli ismi H. P. Lovecraft’a dayandırdı.

Soundlarını oluşturduktan sonra bol bol kayıt yapan grup ilk önceleri resmi başarılar gerçekleştiremese de underground piyasasında tanınmaya ve sevilmeye başladı. İlk albümleri ise 1995 yılında Anubis Records etiketiyle çıktı. Adı “Festival of Atonement” olan albüm aslında hayli başarılı bir eser olsa da müzik şirketinin yerlerde sürünmesi yüzünden varla yok arası bir şey oldu. Bu albümle doğal olarak istediği çıkışı yapamayan grup iki sene sonra başka bir müzik şirketi ile (Visceral Productions) yeni bir albüm yaptı: “Ramses Bringer of War”. Çeşitli sebepler yüzünden şirketle albüm çıkar çıkmaz yolarını ayıran Nile’ın başına bir sene sonraysa adeta devlet kuşu kondu. Önceki iki albümü dinleyen ve beğenen ünlü Relapse Records şirketi grubu himayesine aldı. Önceki iki albümüne “sayılmaz!” diyen Nile, esas çıkış albümünü yapmak için kolları sıvadı. 1998 senesindeyse albümü çıkardı. Grubun esas çıkış albümü olan “Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka” metal camiasını adeta sarstı.

are you fucking kidding me. these guys are so tight. live it is perfect hit for hit. nearly everyone does back up vox. the drummer doesnt have to play with triggers (nor record with) and the fucking guitarist uses a fucking FRETTLESS 12 STRING GUITAR for some songs!! can you play that shit and make people go wild with it!?? didnt think so.
