Adını birebir İngiliz yazar John Milton’un başyapıtından alan Paradise Lost (Kayıp Cennet) 1989 senesinde İngiltere’nin Yorkshire kentinde underground bir metal grubu olarak kuruldu. Underground camiasına girişleri ise çıkardıkları üç demo ve bir single (In Dub) sayılmazsa 1990 yılında çıkan ilk albümleri «Lost Paradise» ile oldu. Fanzinlerin kapaklarında mezarlık önünde umutsuzca poz veren beş hüzünlü genç olarak tanındılar.

1991 yılında ise Peaceville Records etiketiyle çıkan «Gothic» albümü geldi. Bu albümden önce metal müzikte «gothic metal» olarak tabir edilen bir kategori yoktu. Ama Paradise Lost bu albümüyle müziklerinin türünü belirledi ve gothic metal denilen yeni bir akım başlattı. «Gothic»le beraber grubun ilk profesyonel kariyer başarısı geldi ve ilk Avrupa turnelerine çıktılar.

1992 senesinde piyasaya çıkan «Shades of God» grubun üçüncü albümüydü ve öncesinde çıkan single’daki bugün bile dillerden düşmeyen efsane «As I Die» parçasını içeriyordu. Hemen ardından «Icon» geldi ve albüm modern Heavy Metal için bir mihenk taşı olarak kabul edildi. Müzik daha heyecan verici bir hal aldı, ama o karamsar hava, o depresif etmosfer devamını sürdürdü.

Sıradaki albüm «Draconian Times» (1995) oldu. «Icon«‘un karakter olarak ikiziydi ve grubun ekonomik açıdan en başarılı albümüydü. Ansızın, eşsiz müziklerini yaratana dek yıllarca bıkmadan usanmadan çalışan grup, müziksel anlamda bir kavşağa gelmiş bulundu. Grubun lideri Greg Mackintosh elektronik aletler ilgilenmeye başladı ve grubu neredeyse metal müziğin dışında apayrı bir yere sürükledi.

They're the inventors of the so called "Gothic" genre, to use female vocals in their songs, now every band calls themselves Gothic and I'm a bit lame of the female vocals every fucking band uses now in their music!!

I just gave In Requiem another spin to see if maybe I've been too harsh on it, but no, the feeling remains. The only track I think is pretty good would be Ash and Debris, all the rest sounds blatantly recycled to me.

Why they shouldn't change their style? They achieved great doom albums like Icon and Gothic, why repeat it? I think experimentation is a good path for any band. Host isn't more commercial than Draconian or Icon. Just different IMO

hey, I agree that they shouldn't change their style, but what they've done after Icon isn't really bad! Yes, it could be better, it could be like gothic or Icon, but it isn't worthless! You should give it a try.

@thedarkproject : I just shouting my opinion... I am not "deliberately trying to stir up trouble"... I dont take last two albums as example... PL written them down coz was necessary to do them(may be Label or just thirst of money)... They soulles,I do not perceive them as "music"... Even disco shit from Host was better... Anyway my opinion has not exchanged yet 1990-1993= Doom metal masterpieces... (and if u see not many ppl can get into that first 4 albums)

@Therion668: then you're deliberately just trying to stir up trouble. Anybody who's ever heard both (a) a metal band, and (b) Depeche Mode will know that both the In Requiem and Paradise Lost albums are nothing like the latter band. That's just a plain fact. You're entitled to dislike those albums but they are not remotely like Depeche Mode.

I agree with the first part, but not about In Requiem. It's really some of their best songs they've ever done and it feels like a comfortable mix to me. Be interesting to hear what comes next.

For a band like PL there's more money to be earned catering to tr00 metalheads than making an album you truly believe in. Feels to me like PL had gone full circle with the self titled album, and reached a point with In Requiem where they look backwards more than forwards, which is about the worst thing that can happen to a band.

That is utter crap if you subscribe to that whole 'oh noes, sellout!' theory when the music they made for a few albums was barely commerical. Musicians often explore other styles or they end up stagnating (like the post below says). It was a good thing for them and with In Requiem I feel they have a perfect balance and it's an amazing album. Yes, I also like LOAD by Metallica, true metallers can flame away!

Dudes Dudes. 1. you need to eat, you need money to eat ... 2.you like earlier stuff and i like the latest stuff ... so what? its all good this a great band and its great 'cause making the same stuff over and over again will be like ummm boring? years change people change tastes change, i admire change in good directions. which i think is the case for paradise lost ... lets all enjoy the music which ever album we like and be happy ...
