  • Z Nikąd Pomocy!

    8 Tem 2009, 01:37 yazan Batman_Forever

Relacja z koncertu Jacka Kuleszy, Bajzla i M.Bunia.S w sopockiej Papryce.

Oprócz piosenek swojej macierzystej grupy, “Another Dick” i “Dicks Back in Town”, a także coveru “Tender” Blura, artysta grał elektroniczne bity, połączone z gitarowymi melodiami i zapętleniami wywoływanymi przez liczne muzyczne gadżety.

“Fish”, “Scream” i świetnie wykonane “Friend”.

Mieszając materiał z pierwszej i drugiej płyty poznaniak dał z siebie wszystko, podkręcając tempo każdej piosenki do poziomu morderczej prędkości.

W pewnym momencie na scenie zagościł także Glenskii (wokalista Blenders) pomagający zaśpiewać zwrotkę “We Are The Champions” Queen. Prawdziwa miazga.

  • An evening without Silence

    Sat 20 Jun – TW Classic 2009

Recently I visited the latest edition on TW Classic in Werchter. It wasn't really a classic line-up but it turned out to be unforgettable.

The first artist I saw that afternoon was Tom Helsen. He's a Belgium singer, who I got to know through his collaborations with Milow. His music is a cross between Milow and a Dutch band called City to City, which had their moment of fame in 1999 when they scored a number one hit in the Netherlands with The Road Ahead. So not a very special sound a bit like middle of the road music but a nice opener. I missed Motor so I can't tell how they were.

    Setlist Tom Helsen:

    Sun In Her Eyes
    Bring it Home
    Change Yourself
    Longface
    Numbers & Figures
    Shades
    Night and Day
    Easy
    Slowly
    Home
    Out of Something
    Every Little Thing
    When Marvin Calls

Next in the program was Duffy. She became known to the public through her singles ÇalStepping Stone and ÇalMercy. Her first album Rockferry refers to the sixies, a period Amy Whinehouse like to refers to as well. On the album Duffy sings with a very mature and nice voice, but live she sounds like a thin high pitched girl with a lot of annoying vibrations at the end of every singing line. The only impression left after her performance was the clothing she wore. Since at that time it was turning colder, and she walked around on stage in a short and on high heels.

    Setlist Duffy:

    ÇalRockferry
    ÇalHanging On Too Long
    ÇalRain on Your Parade
    ÇalSerious
    ÇalStepping Stone
    Cry To Me
    ÇalBreaking My Own Heart
    ÇalWarwick Avenue
    Stay With Me Baby
    ÇalDelayed Devotion
    ÇalStop
    ÇalMercy

My first highlight for the day Keane was the next. Since their first album Hopes and Fears I've been a great fan of the trio from Sussex, who delivers a great sound for a threesome and delivers great singles which become hit after hit. I was hoping for a good setlist including a lot of the singles, and I wasn't dissapointed. To be honest, although I'm a hugh fan of Depeche Mode for over 25 years now, It was the best performance of the day. Every song was brought with great enthusiasm and the band tried to play as much songs in an hour as possible. Although the standard of the performance was very high, there were highlights: ÇalPerfect Symmetry, one of my favourites of the last album, ÇalIs It Any Wonder? one of the singles from Under the Iron Sea and Under Pressure the Queen / David Bowie song that Keane first performed for the War Child curation concert in 2007. A very positive point towards the band was the great interaction between Tom Chaplin and the crowd.

    Setlist Keane:

    ÇalThe Lovers Are Losing
    ÇalEverybody's Changing
    ÇalBend and Break
    ÇalSpiralling
    This Is The Last Time[/track]
    You Haven't Told Me Anyything
    ÇalIs It Any Wonder?
    ÇalYou Don't See Me
    ÇalPerfect Symmetry
    ÇalSomewhere Only We Know
    ÇalCrystal Ball
    Under Pressure
    ÇalBedshaped

Moby had to do a good job to impress me. I'm not that familiar with his work, except for the singles. Thank god he played some, and also thank god for not playing a set full of dance and house songs. His setlist turned out to be a bit rocky, and although the bass was loud throughout his performance, it was acceptable once you were off the festival ground. I spend the duration of his concert mostly outside the vences where the drinks and food were cheaper. It was a pity because I had prefered Keane standing on the spot having an hour and an half to play their music instead of Moby.

    Setlist Moby:

    Extreme Ways
    In My Heart
    Go
    Sitboth
    ÇalRaining Again
    ÇalBodyrock
ÇalWe Are All Made of Stars
    ÇalMistake
    ÇalPorcelain
    ÇalPale Horses
ÇalWhy Does My Heart Feel So Bad
That's When I Reach for My Revolver
    ÇalWalk With Me
    Find My Baby
    Natural Blues
    ÇalLift Me Up
    Feeling So Real

The last band for me was Depeche Mode. This was the band where I bought my ticket for in the first place. When they anounced in October 2008 that Depeche Mode would be the headliner of TW Classic 2009 I had bought my tickets quickly. I was anxious to hear the new album, but I was a bit disappointed about the new songs, certainly because I like the sound and atmosphere of predecessor Playing the Angel a lot, which unfortuantly was only featured with one track: ÇalPrecious. I already knew that probably five or six songs of the new album would be in the setlist, but well that's just one fourth of the tracks they presented during the nearly two hours they played. Depeche Mode played a decent setlist, with some of my favourite tracks like Home , brought solo by Martin Gore, In Your Room, Enjoy the Silence and Stripped, and tracks going back to halfway the eigthies. But what I missed, and witnessed during earlier tours in the eighties and nineties, was the interaction with the audience. Dave Gahan used to stir up the crowd, but now he was more interacting with the band than with the audience. Now and then they tried to do some audience anticipation time, like during Never Let Me Down, when the audience waved their hands from left to right. I remember the old days when a concert of Depeche Mode was ÇalMore Than a Party (a track they should bring back in the setlist btw). Still the acoustic evening closer Waiting for the Night gave me the creeps and completely satisfied I returned to Leuven and sat down on the terrace of one of the pubs, where while drinking some La Chouffe beers, I relived the concerts of Keane and Depeche Mode, and felt really satisfied.

    Setlist Depeche Mode:

    ÇalIn Chains
    ÇalWrong
    ÇalHole To Feed
    Walking in My Shoes
    It's No Good
    A Question of Time
    ÇalPrecious
    ÇalFly On The Windscreen
    ÇalLittle Soul
    Home
    ÇalCome Back
    ÇalPeace
    In Your Room
    I Feel You
    Policy of Truth
    Enjoy the Silence

  • Old live-reviews

    6 Tem 2009, 15:53 yazan Takatalvi91

This is a couple of old live-reviews that I found on my computer. They are all written during 2007. I haven't really read them through, so I don't really remember what they say and if they are worth posting here at all. Actually I think that they're quite badly written. I wasn't that old back then, haha. But it feels good to have everything here on last.fm, so I'll post them anyway. They are all in swedish though..

    01. ÇalOverture
    02. Something Wicked (Part 1)
    03. ÇalInvasion
    04. ÇalMotivation of Man
    05. ÇalSetian Massacre
    ---. ÇalViolate
    ---. ÇalVengeance Is Mine
    ---. ÇalDeclaration Day
    ---. ÇalThe Hunter
    ---. ÇalDracula
    ---. ÇalStormrider
    ---. ÇalBurning Times
    ---. ÇalTen Thousand Strong
    ---. ÇalA Charge To Keep
---. ÇalHold At All Costs (halva)
    ---. ÇalHigh Water Mark
    17. ÇalMelancholy (Holy Martyr)
    18. ÇalMy Own Savior
    19. ÇalIced Earth (skriket i mitten alltså... riktigt bra!)

    - ÇalWatching Over Me

    Sonata Arctica - Stockholm, Fryshuset - 31/9-07

    01. Intro / In Black and White
    02. Paid in Full
    03. Victoria's Secret
    04. Broken
    05. 8th Commandment
    06. Tallulah
    07. FullMoon
    08. Caleb
    09. Black Sheep
    10. It Won't Fade
    11. ÇalGravenimage
    12. ÇalSan Sebastian
    13. ÇalWe Will Rock You (med publiken som instrument)
    14. My Land
    15. ÇalDon't Say a Word
    16. The Cage
    17. Vodkaa (Hava Nagila)

På Black Sheep körde de live-versen i början: "We're not Iron Maiden and we're not from England, we are Sonata and we come from Finland" och den är mysig.
    - The End of This Chapter
    - Wolf & Raven
    - The Power of One
    - Last Drop Falls m.fl.

    01. ÇalBye Bye Beautiful
    02. ÇalCadence of Her Last Breath
    03. ÇalDark Chest of Wonders
    04. Ever Dream
    05. ÇalWhoever Brings the Night
    06. ÇalAmaranth
    07. ÇalThe Islander
    08. Poet and the pendulum
    09. ÇalSahara
    10. Nemo
    11. Çal7 Days to the Wolves
    12. ÇalWishmaster
    13. Wish I Had an Angel

Sonata Arctica - Haparanda, Aspen Urheiluhalli - 26/12-07

    01. Intro / In Black and White
    02. Paid in Full
    03. Victoria's Secret
    04. Broken
    05. ÇalSan Sebastian
    06. Tallulah
    07. FullMoon
    08. Caleb
    09. Under Your Tree
    10. Black Sheep
    11. It Won't Fade
    12. ÇalGravenimage
    13. ÇalWe Will Rock You (Queen cover, med publiken som instrument, som förra gången)
    14. The Worlds Forgotten, The Words Forbidden
    15. The Cage
    16. 8th Commandment
    17. ÇalDon't Say a Word
    18. Vodkaa (Hava Nagila)

The Worlds Forgotten, The Words Forbidden".

  • [BRAZIL - THE PHILOSOPHY OF VELOCITY] Wenn Bands Briefe singen

Can turn all your colours to white
    One night

Track # 30000: ÇalThe Bartender And The Thief (Stereophonics)
    When you think about it
He's watching every word you say, yeah
    Say yeah
And when he's sussed you out
He calls her up and out she comes and hustles
    Us
    Long digging
    Gone fishing
    Love drinking

The bartender and the thief are lovers
Steal what they need like sisters and brothers
Met in a church a night to remember
Robbing the graves of bodies dismembered

    He watched the lesbian talk
She kissed and groped but mostly talked in lust
    Crushed
    He couldn't make the call
His eyes were gripped on licking tongues
    Enough's enough
    Failed for once

    Long digging
    Gone fishing
    Love drinking

The bartender and the thief are lovers
Steal what they need like sisters and brothers
Met in a church a night to remember
Robbing the graves of bodies dismembered

    Long digging
    Gone fishing
    Love drinking

The bartender and the thief are lovers
Steal what they need like sisters and brothers
Met in a church a night to remember
Robbing the graves of bodies dismembered

Saved what they stole to meet at the altar
Place where they first set eyes on each other
Flew to the sun to start life all over
Set up a bar and robbed all the locals

  • NWOBHM Band of the Week - 3rd July 2009: Saracen

    3 Tem 2009, 13:25 yazan GrantRS

(Previous NWoBHM Band of the Week)

Let's start with a music video and see if you reach the same first impression as I did, this is Saracen - Love On Sight:

If one of your first thoughts was "Poor man's Queen", you reached a similar first impression to mine. The above was one of three very similar music videos arranged by Neat records circa 1985, admittedly it's probably the softest of the three, and neither my favourite nor least favourite of those three, but let us now turn to the chronological beginning:

Apparently there are two bands from the UK called Saracen. I will only be looking at the better known one of the two.

Saracen, according to metal-archives.com (reference), formed in 1976 in Derbyshire as Lammergier, changing their name in 1980 to Saracen.

The band's recorded career kicked off with a single for Nucleus called No More Lonely Nights (youtube) b/w Rock Of Ages. On the basis of said single, it is hard to see how the band were saddled with the tag of heavy metal in the first place. While it may be the case that some aggression could have been toned down in the studio in comparison to live gigs, Saracen were one of the few nwobhm associated bands to employ a keyboard, and there is heavy reliance on it as it dominates the sound, beckoning more comparison with new wave pop or the radio friendly hard rock of Queen than most supposed contemporaries. Even fellow keyboard utilisers White Spirit and Praying Mantis both sound much more aggressive than No More Lonely Nights, or at least they did around this time. Further, Steve Bettney's vocals lack the youthful, aggressive, frustrated, punk-influenced edge of contemporaries regarded recently in the series such as Avenger, Tank and Sledgehammer, instead, again prompting a Queen comparison as some distinctive Freddie Mercury-isms emerge briefly and often, seemingly teasing at a possible segue into ÇalRadio Ga Ga (despite the fact it wouldn't be released for another three years).

The b-side on the other hand, Rock of Ages, bears a closer resemblance to some contemporaries. Saracen here show a more up tempo side with a rhythm section that pound out a up-tempo shuffle rhythm beat most of the way through, making for easy comparison with the majority of the 70s glam scene (which relied heavily upon shuffle rhythm) and here we have a comparison to suggest that Saracen might be leaning more toward the harder, almost metal, side of rock than the poppier style heard on the a-side. Undoubtedly though, what stands out as the most metal thing here is the slightly pirate-like, ÇalEmerald-like, jig-like guitar line that comes up a few times and is arranged in triplets (courtesy of guitarist Robert Bendelow). Vocally here I may be more inclined to draw comparison to Kiss or Paul Rogers than Freddie Mercury, it's slightly more aggressive here but still firmly toward the melodic end of the nwobhm spectrum of vocalists.

Later that year both sides of the single would feature on the band's debut album Heroes, Saints & Fools (reviewed here by Deathriderdoom). You may be glad to learn that four of the album's five tracks that weren't on the single clock in over six minutes and showcase a very different sound to the single.

Opener Crusader sounds to me like a track from Sin After Sin or Stained Class complete with some much more Halford sounding vocals than the two sides of the single. At 6:20 I'm obviously thinking of some of the longer Priest tracks like, for example ÇalLet Us Prey/Call For The Priest. Though I use Rob Halford as a comparison for vocalists far too often, I feel the comparison is extremely relevant here. Unlike some later imitators and exaggerators, and even later performances by Halford himself, Bettney captures much of the emotion and timbre of Halford's performances from 3-4 years previously at times becoming difficult to differentiate from the real thing. Despite the ever-present keyboard a Judas Priest similarity carries through the other mini-epics like Horsemen Of The Apocalypse and Ready To Fly. Vocally, the Halford comparison wanes a little on Horsemen..., but there's some very good guitar work there keeping Priest in mind through the majority of the song but also invoking some comparison to later (then yet to be recorded) Iron Maiden tracks. The keys surface for a lot of Horseme's duration, sounding mainly Keith Emerson and Tony Banks influenced in tone, though keyboardist Richard Lowe displays far greater restraint than Emerson, sticking mainly to just playing one theme when cued. Ready to Fly sounds to me firmly Priest inspired during the verses, while the organ backed extended guitar solo is more in line with Deep Purple.

The title track completely stumps me. The words 'rock opera' spring to mind. We're not just talking about long metal songs anymore, the line to prog influence has most definitely been crossed. It's hard to pin down a single band who couldn't be named as a possible influence on the song. It sounds like it could have been written today, while it was obviously recorded in the 80s. There's perhaps a bit more Yes in the instrumental parts here than some other acts and, certainly than the other songs on the album. It brings to mind the rock operas of Ayreon and The Who, while obviously preceding Ayreon by nearly two decades and not displaying an overtly obvious debt to anything pre-1970. I wish there was a youtube link for this one because I'm not sure anyone reading this will have a clue what I'm on about otherwise unless they find some other way to hear it.

Dolphin Ride is a fairly bland instrumental led by Richard Lowe's keyboard. It's pleasant and tuneful, and makes up for the lack of non-epic tracks that weren't on the preceding single but I wouldn't say it adds too much.

As usual, I don't know the what the sales figures were like, but judging by the relative infrequency of the band's name's inclusion on various nwobhm short lists, I'm guessing it wasn't a surprise success domestically. ...though there are reports that it did well in Venezuela. Go figure. Interestingly the few magazine quotes I've come across all opt to describe Saracen as progressive rock and not as heavy metal. I would hypothesise that this frame of mind could be a contributing factor to the infrequency with which the band is mentioned in nwobhm lists. However, the 6-8 minute tracks on the debut album don't all resemble our usual perception of prog, unless, that is, you would be inclined to put some late 70s Priest tracks into the progressive category as well.

Whatever actually did happen, it wasn't until 1984 that a follow up surfaced. Change Of Heart was released on neat records and preceded by the single We Have Arrived (youtube) b/w A Face In The Crowd (youtube). The single doesn't show a huge difference over the previous single, with a return to the Queen-like AOR/ melodic hard rock sound displayed three years prior, but in comparison to the debut album, it would appear to be a major step toward stripping down the length and dumbing down for radio, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, if that happens to be your thing.

The album, Catalogue number: NEAT 1016, included both sides of the single again, and this time failed to surpass the 4:33 mark. The major change, of course, is the revamped line-up, now retaining only two members from the past album, vocalist Bettney and keyboardist Lowe. The split having occurred before signing to Neat, just as a major label, Polygram, had taken an interest in the band. Needless to say, the split lost the interest of Polygram leaving the remains of the band to turn to Neat instead.

Tracks like Cheatin (youtube) and Seabird (youtube) as well as Love on Sight (see top, remember?) continue the unambitious AOR like trend of Change of Heart, though Seabird, nearing four and a half minutes does have a slight touch of prog to it.

The group disbanded a year after Change of Heart and remained split until a reunion circa 2000. Two further albums were issued in 2003 and 2006, the former (Red Sky) composed mainly of re-recordings of earlier songs, the latter a Da Vinci Code-esque concept album about Templar Knights entitled Vox In Excelso. Meet Me At Midnight (youtube) is a recording for Vox...

For further details and preview clips try the official website. A review of Red Sky can be found here. Interested parties may wish to check out Rob Bendelow's solo project Templar, which shares a section of the same official website.

My summarising thoughts are that this band has four very, very good songs on their debut album. They also have a pumped up glam rocker on that album, if that's your thing. After that, not so much. I haven't been tempted to change my first impression of "Poor man's Queen" for the second release, and what I've heard of the later stuff hasn't enthralled me, though a comparison to Magnum may be in order, particularly seeing as Bob Catley shares a drummer with the current line-up. Seemingly a four track wonder here though.
