Queens of the Stone Age
2008 was a great year for music - lots of exciting new projects and bands that blew me away, plus some great ones that surprised everyone and returned after a decade or more in hibernation.
Compiling a list of what I thought were the best albums released last year was a painful process, as a lot of great work was released last year and it was difficult to pick just 50 of them. Even more difficult was the process of ranking them.
This is the first time I didn't split the list into two parts (like I did in the previous years, into heavy and light(er) stuff). The reason for this lies behind the fact that I found it impossible to justify why a certain album fit into one category more than the other. Nothing reflects this better than the Crystal Castles and Portishead albums - usually electronica would automatically fit into the light(er) category, but anyone who has heard these two albums knows they are anything but light.
Anyway here they are, 50 of the best albums released in 2008, according to me:
01. Best albums:
1. Portishead - Third
One of the most influential groups of the 90s came out of retirement to scare the shit out of everybody. I was a huge skeptic when it was announced, thinking nothing could surpass their previous work, but they managed to prove me wrong. It's definitely a challenging listen – an attack of dark, noisy and industrial compositions by mastermind Geoff Barrow accompanied by Beth Gibbons sounding like she's on the verge of a nervous breakdown. They definitely weren't holding back when making this one, as there isn't a single second of relief for the listener in between the moments of pure terror. Album of the year? Album of the decade!
2. Meshuggah - obZen
I loved Catch-33, but for the majority it was a difficult listen, even by Meshuggah standards. obZen is more direct and varied than its predecessor, but at the same time still incredibly heavy and technical. They managed to join everything that was great about their previous work and make it even more brutal and complex. This album is the culmination of everything they've done in the last 15 years, it's what they've been working towards throughout their entire career.
3. Mogwai - The Hawk is Howling
Holding the emotional impact and subtlety of their earlier work and the dynamic and complexity of their later albums, The Hawk is Howling combines the best of everything Mogwai have to offer – in their best work since CODY.

02. Disappointments/worst albums:
- Kings of Leon - Only By The Night
One of the most promising names in rock become just another copy of U2. Thanks, but no thanks.
- Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends
If even Brian Eno can't save them, nothing can.
- Cryptopsy - The Unspoken King
Tech death kings now playing predictable deathcore? No thanks. They should've called it quits when Lord Worm left the band.
- The Killers - Day & Age
I've been defending Sam's Town ever since it came out, and I still believe it's better than their debut, but this one just doesn't click with me.
03. Refused to listen:
- Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy
For me, the Guns N' Roses ended with Axl playing a piano and using an orchestra on Use Your Illusion I. They were a completely different band from then on, one I haven't listened to in years, and well... I don't intend to change that now.
- Metallica - Death Magnetic
I listened to The Day That Never Comes and it sounded like a bad cover band trying to recreate the sound of the first four albums.

Someone gave me a ticket for this, so I thought I'd go check out Pain, since I'm a big Tägtgren/Hypocrisy fan. Pain weren't all that bad, something you'd see on MTV, industrial pop rock aimed at teenagers... but I know I'd be pissed off if I actually paid for the ticket. I'm a bit disappointed in Peter, but I'm sure that'll go away when the new Hypocrisy album comes out.
Still, if Pain were mediocre I don't know what to say about Nightwish. They've been going downhill since the Wishmaster album (not that they were that great back then), but they are nothing but complete crap right now. I thought I hated Tarja and her pretentious/exaggerated pronunciation, but nothing prepared me for how bad the new one is. "Bland" isn't the right word, but it's the first word that comes to mind. Tarja at least had some range. I got the hell out of there after three songs cause it made me physically ill - I think this is what they were playing to the prisoners in Guantanamo to break them.
Anyway, if I forget about this painful experience, it was quite a great year, and with everyone from Anathema and Katatonia to Queens of the Stone Age, Franz Ferdinand and The Prodigy recording new albums, it looks like 2009 is gonna be even better.

Top 10 músicas que eu nunca me canso de escutar

Nunca fui de fazer listinha de top isso ou aquilo. Mas olhando para as minhas músicas mais ouvidas no Last.fm eu percebi que eu ouço muita música no pc. Ela reflete bem as músicas que não importa humor, época, local ou companhia eu sempre tenho um desejo incontrolável de ouvir e com certeza vou apreciá-las ao máximo.
Esta lista no entanto não bate necessariamente com as minhas top 10 ouvidas no Last, mas chega perto.
- 10 - Don McLean -
American Pie: Devia ter avisado desde o começo que essa lista terá alguns clichês. Pode me xingar, chamar de antiquado, falar que é óbvio, que eu estou tentando não me arriscar. Tudo isso pode até ser verdade, mas é inegável que esse clássico de mais de oito minutos é nada menos que maravilhoso. Com sua letra indecifrável, mas com muitas possibilidades de interpretações alegóricas. É a música perfeita para enterros, Amazing Grace que me perdoe.
- 09 - Pixies - Monkey Gone to Heaven: Desde que eu me conheço por gente eu sou ateu. Mas isso nunca me impediu de encontrar um certo deleite em conhecer e entender as religiões, monoteístas ou não. Referência religiosa, quando bem usada, pode criar peças maravilhosas de cultura, como esta música.
- 08 - Cat Stevens - Peace Train: Eu gosto de folk, e gosto bastante de Cat Stevens. Mas devo admitir que o motivo maior desta música figurar nesta lista é muito mais memória afetiva que valor qualitativo em si.
- 07 - Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies): Arcade Fire é uma das bandas dos anos 2000 que eu mais gosto. E "Rebellion (Lies)" é uma música que não somente tem uma melodia incrível, mas que a letra é genial. Além de também ter seu valor emocional.
- 06 - Billie Holiday - Solitude: Se não fosse o blues e o jazz nada do mundo da música atual existiria. Eu aprendi isso quando ainda pirralho me apaixonei por música e fui atrás das suas origens. Instantaneamente me apaixonei pelas duas. Uma das vozes mais belas e das personagens mais representativas do espírito do Blues e do Jazz
foié a BIllie Holiday. Por mais que eu quisesse colocar toda sua discografia aqui me limito a sua faixa com a qual mais me identifico.
- 05 - Paulinho Moska - Último dia: Um tanto quanto mela-cueca, sim concordo. Alguns dirão brega, também. Mas qual o problema, é um crime ter um ponto fraco? Essa música é linda e ponto final.
- 04 - Portishead - Glory Box: Se eu realmente preciso explicar o por que desta música estar aqui você não devia estar lendo isto.
- 03 - Semisonic - Secret Smile: one hit wonder, mas que foi o suficiente pra criar uma das letras de maior impacto na minha vida. Essa música tem mais influência sobre mim que qualquer pessoa possa imaginar.
- 02 - The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby: Você não pensou que eu faria uma lista de músicas que eu posso ouvir a qualquer momento que não teria Beatles. Quando se trata do quarteto de Liverpool existem muitas controvérsias sobre qual seria a verdadeira obra-prima deles. Minha opinião é simples, a obra deles é tão extensa e de tanta qualidade que cada individuo cultivara um apreço especial por algo diferente do universo beatleniano. Pessoalmente eu dirijo meu apreço para Eleanor Rigby, e nem tente me convencer que existem outras melhores.
- 01 - Johnny Cash - Hurt: Sim, não tem como fugir. Quando eu disse que o Last reflete com certa verdade meu gosto eu me referia especialmente da faixa que eu mais ouço. Tudo bem, é um cover. Mas tão bem feito que já vi pessoas jurarem de pés juntos ser do velho Cash e não do Nine Inch Nails. Uma lenda como o falecido Sr. Cash só poderia pegar uma música que na minha opinião já é boa, com uma letra magnífica e transformar em algo que não tem como ser descrito. Pode me chamar de masoquista, mas quando ouço essa música fico eufórico. Sem sombra de dúvidas merece o primeiro lugar.

Poucos discos de 2008 me agradaram, fato visivel na minha lista.
01 - The Postmarks – The Postmarks
O melhor disco da banda, apesar de já me soar bem o novo disco: by the numbers.
02 - Nada Surf – Let Go
Nada Surf me foi devidamente apresentado na festa de estréia e despedida do Dj. Mudico(Cesar_Marcio). Esse disco possui uma das melhores tracklists que já ouvi.
03 - Stone Sour – Come What (Ever) May
Projeto paralelo de Corey Taylor e James Root, vocalista e guitarrista do Slipknot. Um disco pesado que animou as minhas tardes de completo ócio no antigo emprego.
04 - Kate Nash – Made of Bricks
Disco animado... conheci depois de ouvirFoundations (Full Explicit Version), música que estava hospedada no servidor de um por fora que fiz no final do ano passado.
05 - The Beatles – White Album
Uma palavra: CLÁSSICO
06 - Feist – The Reminder
Quem não se animou ao ouvir1234. No entanto, as músicas So Sorry e The Limit To Your Love são tesão puro.
07 - Ludov – O Exercício Das Pequenas Coisas
Resquicios de 2007. Ótimo disco.
08 - The Frames – Fitzcarraldo
Conheci o Frames por conta do Burn the Maps. Em seguida ouvi o The Cost que considerei o melhor disco da banda. A verdade é que eu não tinha parado para ouvir os trabalhos mais antigos... Foi então que eu tive aRevelate (ahn? ahn? ahn? sacou????)
09 - Detonatuas Roque Clube – O Retorno de Saturno
O tempo passou e o amadurecimento é visível. A perda do guitarrista Rodrigo Netto é notada por todo o disco. Parabéns a banda por ter superado a tragédia.
10 - Travis – The Invisible Band
Melhor disco do Travis. O disco que a finada Rádio Cidade do Rio de Janeiro me deu na promoção Rock 20.
11 - Coldplay – Parachutes
O DISCO do coldplay. Por mais que eles tenham lançados o Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, nada vai me tirar da cabeça queShiver é a demonstração final de amor, junto com Black do Pearl Jam.
12 - Queens of the Stone Age – Songs for the Deaf
Não adianta. O disco é bom, tem o Dave Grohl e sempre lembro daquele clipe em que o cervo dirige o carro com os caçadores amarrados.
13 - Pearl Jam – Yield
Melhor disco da melhor banda do universo. O que você quer que eu diga mais???
14 - Marianne Faithfull – The Very Best of Marianne Faithfull
Quem disse que Rede Globo não apresenta nada que preste? Na verdade, eu conheci Marianne Faithfull por conta de um programa do Multishow que eu não lembro o nome, apresentado por alguém que eu tb não lembro o nome. Fato é que a músicaAs Tears Go By já vale todo o disco.
15 - Ludov – Disco paralelo
Mais um resquicio de 2007. A verdade é que Ludov é uma das grandes bandas brasileiras da atualidade. Falta apenas vir mais vezes ao Rio de Janeiro. :o)
16 - Beirut – Gulag Orkestar
Maldita novela da Globo. Zach Condon tem grandes discos e não merece ser conhecido apenas por Elephant Gun.
17 - Queens of the Stone Age – Era Vulgaris
Último disco da banda, tão bom quanto o Songs for the Deaf.
18 - James Blunt – All The Lost Souls
O You're Beautiful largou essa vida e foi viver em1973. (Que horrivel!!!). Esse disco é legal. Só é necessário se despir dos preconceitos.
19 - Beirut – The Flying Club Cup
Ótimo disco. Utilize a resenha do Gulag Orkestar para este.
20 - Morrissey – Greatest Hits
O(a) tio(a) indie é foda. Esse cara poderia vir ao Brasil em 2008. -
