Uniquely soulful and honest, Randi Laubek, first seduced the hearts and ears of the Danish listening public when her debut long-player Ducks & Drakes was awarded the Danish Grammy (now Danish Music Award) for “Best Album” and she was named “Best Female Artist” and “Best Songwriter.”
Like Hans Christian Andersen’s mermaid who journeyed from the sea to pursue her love, Laubek journeyed from the remote northern fishing village of Voerså to the Danish capital of Copenhagen to chase her musical dreams, but unlike the title character in Andersen’s tale, Laubek’s voice made the journey too, and what a voice it is. It is a voice that has won over critics and fans alike; earning her three Danish Music Awards for her debut offering, and another nomination as “Best Female Artist” for her most recent album The Wedding Of All Things.
It has been said of her crystalline, sultry voice that “the only real comparison would be with the legendary Joni Mitchell” (GAFFA Denmark) and that ”live, every one of her songs possesses a beauty that gives you the chills.”(BT Denmark)
Growing up in a small village of just 500 people, with her father being the local school inspector and her mother one of the teachers, her family’s house was a hub of activity: “The grownups would always come around to seek advice from my parents and to talk about politics, society and books…it was all very adult, and the few other kids in town were more interested in playing sports. So I created my own little world where I’d write my own stories, paint my own pictures and just sing - making up melodies in my head and singing to myself for hours and hours…”
It wasn’t long after Randi got her first guitar for her eighth Christmas that she started to write songs to go with the melodies in her head, at the same time absorbing all the music around her: “My sister introduced me to Prince, Tracy Chapman, Pink Floyd and Eurythmics; and my brother to the Dire Straits and Mike Oldfield records in his collection.” But it was on a vacation that the young Laubek discovered a kindred musical spirit: “I found the Kate Bush album Never For Ever when I was digging through a record store on summer vacation in London. I had grown up with my parents sharing fairytales about nature and myths of elf girls and mermaids, and here was this cover… Kate standing in a light summer dress with all those wonderful, strange creatures coming out from underneath. Thematically, it could have been one of my own paintings…the idea that every person contains everything within… all that is magical, all that is beautiful, all that is ugly, and there’s more to life than what first catches your eye. When I came home and played the album I fell in love with this voice and musical world that was even more amazing than the cover. It was unlike anything I had ever heard before, or since”
Her musical education continued at the age of 14 when a new guitar teacher introduced her to jazz, and Randi bought her first electric guitar and four-track recorder.
By the age of 18, Laubek packed up her guitar and left home - moving south to the Danish metropolis of Copenhagen. Soon after her arrival, Laubek was discovered by the legendary Danish record producer Poul Bruun (Hanne Boel, Kim Larsen, Gasolin), but when offered a deal with EMI, Laubek declined: “Poul wanted to sign me after hearing the vocals I had done as a favor on someone else’s demo. It was all happening so fast, and I wanted some time to find my voice.” Laubek continues: “I settled into life in Copenhagen, studying at The Rhythmic Music Conservatory, touring as a backing vocalist for Sanne Salomonsen, and playing in a few cover bands. Some other labels came offering deals, but I turned them down as well. A year later Poul contacted me again; when we met up I pulled out my guitar, played him one of my songs “Fairytales” and he signed me on the spot.”
Encouraged by Bruun to avoid the producer driven pop saturating European radio at the time, Laubek continued her studies at the conservatory (a five year program) and appeared in the (fully clothed) Nansen Theatre production of “Hair” while at the same time writing and recording her debut album Ducks & Drakes. The stunningly heartfelt ten-song collection (including the song that got her signed “Fairytales”) proved to be the musical antidote that audiences were searching for and went on to be named “Best Album” and she hailed as “Best Female Vocalist” and “Best Songwriter.”
Laubek has continued to build upon both her commercial and critical reputation. Her two follow-up albums Almost Gracefully and The Wedding Of All Things have both resided at the top of the Danish album charts and at the same time have garnered praise for their unique artistry and vision. She has toured extensively throughout Scandinavia and has contributed songs to the critically acclaimed soundtracks of the Danish films “I Lysets Hjerte” (“In The Light Of The Heart”) and “Motello” (w/ Tango Orkestret).
Most recently Laubek has been commissioned to write songs for the Copenhagen Theatre Production of Shakespeare's “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” contribute her version of Bob Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay” to a Danish Television production and also participate in Danish Radio’s “Coming Home” project where select Danish vocalists play concerts in their respective home towns and join together for a final group concert to be recorded with the Danish Radio Big Band.
