New Iced Earth with the Ripper or new Iced Earth with Barlow? This is a two part album review where I intend to find the strong and weak points of the latest two full albums by Iced Earth.

Framing Armageddon
The album has been out for some time now and I think people have a good idea of their own personal opinion on the album. The general

direction of the album is more Power Metal utilizing a lot of choirs to fit the big choruses. It is also filled with interludes to go with the concept of the album. The mixing brings the often much layered vocals to the absolute forefront while letting the guitars lay in the background as opposed to their more thrash-oriented early albums.

- Lack of memorable riffs
- No exceptional lead guitar-work
- Rhythm section lacks punch!!!

Song by song
1.Overture is an intro piece with some cool instrumentation going on. It is a really enjoyable song that sets the mood of the album. Not the best intro I’ve heard but it does what it is supposed to do.
2.Something Wicked (Part. 1) is a cool semi-progressive song with lots of cool guitar- and, above all, drum-work. The vocal melodies really push Tim Owens to the maximum and he delivers. Borrows some melodies from the old SWTWC-trilogy.
3.Invasion + Motivation of Man begins with some cool sound-effects and goes into full metal assault. This song worked really well live because of the chanting-section of the song.
4.Setian Massacre re-uses some vocals melodies from Motivation of Man and brings the tempo up one notch. Some cool lead guitar-work utilizing the pentatonic scale which is not all too common in IE music.
5.A Charge to Keep slows the tempo down. It is saved by a great vocal performance but isn’t all too interesting apart from that.
6.Reflections + Ten Thousand Strong begins with a really atmospheric intro before turning into a really high-tempo song. Really good song overall but you get tired of the chorus after a couple of listens. Awesome drumming and guitar riffs with some brutal screams from the Ripper.
7.Execution + Order of the Rose slows the album down once again. The intro has an incredible climax that leads into a mid-tempo song with some really cool lead-work. The build-up to the chorus works well, still not one of my favorites off the album.
8.Cataclysm + The Clouding starts with sound-effects and continues with one of Schaffer’s best compositions ever. The calm part is just incredible and Owens takes it to the next level. Matt did a great job with the re-recorded version but I will always prefer the original.
9.Infiltrate and Assimilate starts off with some weird riffs and is one of the songs I think would fit better with Matt’s vocals. It has a cool bridge and chorus and ends with some trademark Ripper screams.
10.Retribution Through the Ages sounds really Power Metal to me. The vocal melodies during the verses sound a bit awkward for the first couple of listens. One of the least interesting songs of the album.
11.Something Wicked (Part 2) is an instrumental song and actually a really cool one. No blistering guitar-work just good melodies borrowed from the old Something Wicked trilogy done with tribal instruments.
12.The Domino Decree is easily one of the most interesting pieces and of one my favorites. Incredible melodies, guitar-work, drumming, vocals and a electronic organ makes it one of the best cuts.
13.Framing Armageddon is the most bad-ass song on the album and would really have benefit from a different mixing because the guitar-frenzy is just as important as the vocals in this song. I was surprised when they didn’t play this live because it truly is a classic Iced Earth song. The lead-work is some of the best on the album, although short. Every part of the song is perfect with an incredible climax!
14.When Stars Collide (Born is He) is an odd piece with no ordinary vocals, just choirs. It describes the events that are to come in the concept-story. Very powerful song nonetheless, including some cool riffs.
15.The Awakening is a quite disturbing outro-piece.
