Even from a distance you can hear it; the fragile notes from an acoustic guitar slipping through between the creaking of the crickets. As you approach the little house you see the source of these notes sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch, with a guitar on her lap and her faithful watchdog Lasse at her feet. A gentle summer night’s breeze is rustling the leaves on the apple trees in front of the house and brings the scent of freshly baked corn bread and newly cut hay. Welcome home.

Some artists spend most of their careers to find their musical home while others get there early. Sophie Zelmani had already found her home when she released her first album and so far she hasn’t shown any signs of wanting to run away from that home. Ever since the acclaimed debut in 1995 she has stayed true to her vision. Never swayed, never hesitated. With each new album her melancholic, country scented music has taken small steps forward, somewhat shifting in expression but never leaning towards musical trends. When you’re in the business of making timeless music, you don’t have to do that.

On the eighth of September, Sophie Zelmani releases her eighth album, The Ocean and Me. And this time she and her long time associate, Lasse Halapi, decided to try out something new. Instead of recording the songs one by one they choose to record them in a given order several nights in a row, thereby letting the songs influence each other and grow forth in a spontaneous flow. From these sessions the best takes were chosen from a holistic point of view.
