1980’li yıllarda San Fransisco Bay Area bölgesinden yayılan Thrash Metal akımının en ünlü gruplarından biri olan Testament ilk olarak 1983’te vokalist Steve Souza, gitaristler Eric Peterson ve Derrick Ramirez, bas gitarist Greg Christian, ve davulcu Louie Clemente tarafından “Legacy” adıyla kuruldu. Grup, daha sonraları tam bir gitar efsanesine dönüşecek olan Alex Skolnick’in katılımıyla adını Testament olarak değiştirdi. 1986 yılında plak şirketlerinin dikkatini çekmeyi başaran grup, ilk vokalist Souza’nın yine bir diğer Bay Area efsanesi olan Exodus’a katılması ve yerine Chuck Billy’in katılmasıyla ideal kadrosuna ulaştı. Megaforce Records ile bir albüm anlaşması imzalayan grup bir sonraki yıl debut albümü “The Legacy”yi yayınladı. Bugün thrash metal sahnesinde bir klasik olarak kabul edilen albüm içerdiği sert gitar riffleri ve harmonik öğeleriyle Testament’ı Metallica ile karşılaştırılır bir duruma getirdi. Testament daha sonra Anthrax’ın ön grubu olarak Amerika ve Avrupa turnesine çıktı. Bu turne sırasında kaydedilen “Live at Eindhoven” EP’si Testament’in konumunu sağlamlaştırdı.

Testament 1989 yılında Practice What You Preach albümünü yayınladı. Grup bu albümle, sert ve agresif soundundan taviz vermeden melodik anlamda oldukça ileri bir noktaya ulaştı. Savatage ve Wrathchild ile birlikte bir yıl boyunca Amerika’yı turlayan grup MTV tarafından büyük destek gördü.

90’lı yıllarda kadrosunda birçok değişiklik gören grup ilk kaybı gitarist Skolnick’in Savatage’a geçmesiyle yaşadı. Yine yakın dönemde davulcu Clemente’nin yerini bir dönem Slayer ile de çalan ünlü davulcu Paul Bostaph aldı.

I've been a huge thrash binge lately, and these guys are getting a lot of play on this end. Everything pre-'95 is wicked (including Live at the Fillmore). Unfortunately i missed seeing them at Metal Masters since the show started so bloody early, but hopefully they'll be back one day soon. I'll just have to 'settle' for seeing Overkill in October for the time being... heh.

True story motherfuckersI went to see this very band today but I missed them even though I had arrived a mire 15min after the gates had been opened.......That's right....... gates opened at 5:30 and they were done before 6.00, If anyone can think of anything stupider then that I'd sure like to here it...........

I'd agree even with the idea that the songs but souls of black in "the album souls of black" sucks. But i can't understand what's immature in it.

Hey, I just said The New Order is very inconsistent, I don't understand how people can call it a classic. Their debut was a lot better. Souls of Black is still really bad.

And to chime in on the Souls of Black discussion: That album is not as bad as you're saying, GravelessSouls, but it WAS rushed and it shows. They slapped that album together and you can see where they lifted just about every idea, every riff, and every melody from previous albums.

I just seen testament in the Metal Masters tour with Judas Priest, Heaven and Hell and Motorhead and it was just a half hour of Testamen but man they fucking Rock.
