Hollanda’lı, müzik basınının deyimiyle senfonik metal, kendi deyimleriyle atmosferik trip-rock grubu. Bir doom metal grubu olarak başlayan The Gathering, Mandylion albümünde gruba katılan Anneke van Giersbergen ile ideal kadrosunu kurdu ve peşpeşe hepsi müzik eleştirmenlerince övgü toplayan albümler yayımlamaya başladı. Ancak ticari olarak giderek düşen bir satış grafiğine sahiptirler. Kadın vokal kullanımından dolayı çoğu zaman Lacuna Coil, Nightwish ve Evanescence gibi gruplarla karşılaştırılsalar da, aslında bu gruplardan son derece farklı, çok daha minimalist, atmosferik ve progresif bir müzikleri vardır.
Grubun son albümü, Home, AllMusic Guide’dan peşpeşe 5 üzerinden 4,5 yıldız alan 5. stüdyo albümleridir.
5 Haziran 2007’de, solist Anneke van Giersbergen, yeni kurduğu «Agua de Annique» adlı bir gruba yoğunlaşmak üzere Ağustos ayında The Gathering’i terk edeceğini açıkladı. The Gathering, bu haberi takiben yeni erkek ve/veya kadın vokaller aradığını bildiren bir mesajı web sitelerinde yayınladı.

Honestly, I think Anneke really has a huge talent at writing lyrics. I can't even think of a single song where I didn't like the lyrics. She was doing an awesome work with it, and I hope the band will not lose this magic (the lyrics on Always... and Almost A Dance were not bad either, but can't remember who wrote them =/).

LE0- My Souvenirs CD has nothing on it. I have the one with the bonus tracks. Monsters by Zlaya Hadzich (google search) I like almost all of the lyrics she wrote with The Gathering. My favs are Travel and Blacklight District..

Hum, I have a song of them called "Katerinaa - A celtic snowfall" and it really sounds like them (sounds, tuning, arrangements) but as it is an instrumental I'm not totally sure if it's from The Gathering - and if it is, where it comes from (Album?/EP?/...). It's truly a great song and if it's by them it should be in their Top50... Somebody can help me out? Answers over shoutbox/pm preferred :)

I'm with Repro, I don't know why people are obsessed with getting genres right. The Gathering's style doesn't fit in any comfortable boxes... Its for this reason I'm glad they made the tag list less prominent in the site redesign.
