The Mars Volta, Cedric ve Omar ikilisinin eski grupları At the Drive-In’den ayrıldıktan sonra, ses uzmanı Jeremy Micheal Ward ile birlikte çalıştıkları De Facto isimli deneysel dub grubunu, klavyeci Isaiah Owens ve bas gitarist Eva Gardner’ın gelmesiyle beraber yepyeni bir projeye dönüştürmesi sonucu oluştu. Cedric ve Omar’ın amacı yaratıcılıklarını ifade edebilecek yeni bir gruptu ve De Facto’da Cedric davul, Omar da bas çalarken bunu yapamıyorlardı. Grup baterist Blake Hemming ile ilk demolarını oluşturan iki şarkı kaydettikten sonra, baterist Jon Theodore’u tercih etti. Daha sonraları adından çok söz ettirecek olan Jon Theodore ile ilk konserlerine çıkıp üç şarkı kaydeden The Mars Volta, bu üç şarkıyı 2002 yılında Tremulant EP adı altında piyasaya çıkardı.
Tremulant EP’den sonra bas gitarist Eva Gardner ile yollarını ayıran topluluk, bir yandan turneye çıkıp konserlere devam ederken, diğer yandan ilk albümlerinin hazırlıklarına başladı. Albüm kayıtları sırasında bas gitarist sıkıntısı yaşayan gruba Red Hot Chili Peppers’ın (RHCP) bas gitaristi Flea yardım etti. Flea albümdeki 10 şarkının 9’unda bas gitar çaldı. Bir diğer RHCP üyesi ve gitarist Omar Rodriguez’in yakın arkadaşı olan John Frusciante de albümde yer aldı. Son olarak Rick Rubin’in yapımcılığını üstlendiği De Loused in the Comatorium 2003 yılının Haziran ayında, Gold Standard Laboratories ve Universal Studios etiketleriyle raflardaki yerini aldı. Grup, albüm çıkmadan önce başladığı turneyi, ses uzmanı Jeremy Micheal Ward’un aşırı dozda eroin kullanımı sebebiyle ölmesi üzerine yarıda bıraktı. De Loused in the Comatorium grubun en başarılı albümü oldu ve Amerika‘da 500.000’e yakın sattı.

He wasnt calling them pop. They are pop in the sense of the word popular, and they use verse/chorus pop structure (abite with long instrumental sections) But of course the actual sound they make is nothing related to the pop style. Btw there are some pop songs in non 4/4. "All You Need is Love" by The Beatles is in 7/4 and 4/4, "Kiss from a Rose" by Seal if I remember is in 6/8. Even parts of "Hey Ya" by Outcast are arguably close to 11/4.
