i'm doing it like this: all albums i listen to but dont have a real copy of get listed by priority, and every 2 weeks i buy the most important one. i feel quite ok with it, i dont have that much money, and now i got the failure epiphany and sacrament (the remix of endtime was simply delicious)... but when i have 2 or 3 albums of one artist i try to buy other artist's albums first.... so yeah, that's just my way of doing it. but in the end visiting live shows is best anyway

I think we all agree in the end that owning the CD is the best option. And lets call it quits there.
-
xFabby şunu yazdı:
Well, I was just pointing out the other side. I'm not even going to argue that downloading is an acceptable alternative to buying the music. The fact that it's just a digital copy of something for those of us who don't care about the physical CDs makes it seem different from your computer. The fact that you can get an album off iTunes or the exact same album off Limewire for free (not to mention you don't have to deal with Apple's annoying copyright protection) makes it quite appealing, and it's why people see it as not so much a product.

I think Bobby Mesh would be incredibly upset by all of this.
-
catatf şunu yazdı:
I'm not arguing with you, mainly a comment after yours where someone was complaining they can't buy music due to lack of money. I don't have loads of money and there are many things I'd like to buy but I can't. The thing I don't understand about the non-existent value is that these 1s and 0s come from a tangible product that someone, somewhere down the line ripped the 1s and 0s from. If people ordered a CD online or bought at the local store then they'd have the physical object to see and touch. I can't see or touch the software I use to write the majority of my music, but in my eyes it's just as real as the Roland synth I have sitting over here next to me.
-
mickhead şunu yazdı:
Well I have already mentioned that I purchase the albums afterwards. Granted the same cannot be said about everyone else. I think the impression of value, or lack there of is that downloads have nothing physical to them, since they are not an object people can see and touch, its value seems almost non existant. Its just 1s and 0s. I think thats why some people percieve it as ok.
-
catatf şunu yazdı:
Also, what makes music any less valuable than any other product out there? The minute Alfa Matrix presses an Unter Null CD it becomes a product for better or worse.
-
catatf şunu yazdı:
Okay, we can argue semantics... but point is: I want something that costs money, I don't have the money for it... I don't get what I want until I have the money. Downloaders want something that costs, they don't have the money for it... they still get what they want even though they "don't have the money". That is where I call B.S.
-
mickhead şunu yazdı:
Thats a completely irrelevent example. Downloading is not stealing. Its copyright infringement. Stealing removes the original just like your mac example. Downloading produces a copy, and leaves the original source in tact. Your arguement is flawed.
-
catatf şunu yazdı:
I don't really have the money to put into a brand new Mac to replace my old one... so I think I'll just walk into the Apple Store at the mall tomorrow, unhook one of the MacPro towers and walk out of the store with it. Because, you know, I feel I should have that MacPro but I just don't have the money for it right now. I bet I'd MAYBE get to the mall exit before I was arrested... MAYBE. Double-standards are awesome.
-
xFabby şunu yazdı:
In defense of the downloaders, I really don't have the money to put into music. Until someone actually decides they feel like hiring me, what precious little cash I get goes straight into food. As far as I can tell, food > music. I'm not trying to excuse the behaviour, I'm just saying there are reasons other than being lazy and cheap. :\
-
mickhead şunu yazdı:
I agree theres nothing better than having a physcial copy. But I have to hear an entire album first before I purchase it, (except once I know i like the artist, if one album is good, I'll buy the rest without downloading them) the problem with myspace and stuff is artists put their best 4 songs on there, and the rest of the album could be awful. Its happened to me many a time. If a downloaded album is no good, its deleted. If its good, its purchased. Thats how I operate. And how I think p2p and downloading should be. It shouldn't be an excuse not to buy the albums, just a try before you buy. I don't think just a few tracks are enough. I know there alot of people who dont give a shit and just download and download, but I like to think enough people care to operate like I do. I hope they do anyway.

unternull şunu yazdı:
@ mickhead - thanks for going out and purchasing my CD instead of just being lazy and staying with the downloaded version. labels and artists are taking a massive hit in sales because of the downloading problem. even worse, a lot of people don't give a shit, or think they are entitled to a 'free album' when they don't realize how much time and money goes into releasing just a single album. the failure epiphany took me two years to write. some jackass is going to take 30 minutes to download it? nice. i'm not in this for the money... at all - because i'd be in the wrong scene... however that's just disrespectful. downloading WOULD help if it generates more CD sales. however with Myspace and other sites like that - there's no fucking excuse to be using the p2p and downloading full albums. what ever happened to just going to the record store and buying a CD? i loved to do it when i was younger and i still do. there's nothing better than holding the actual physical copy in your hands.
-
isolationtheory şunu yazdı:
Yeah, that is a valid point to bring up indeed. Downloading something to check it out is something you have to do unless you have a ton of cash. Though the three tracks available here was enough for me to decide The Failure Epiphany was worth the money.
-
mickhead şunu yazdı:
I don't think the 3 available are the best. They're all great of course. But I vote for the failure epiphany, you have fallen from grace and scilence, as the quintessential ones. I'm not sure how wise admitting this is, but I downloaded the failure epiphany on a whim, just cause the album title was great. And I loved it! I have since bought the album (Deluxe edition), and the absolution/sarcrament eps, and the stray album (deluxe again). But the point is, sometimes downloading helps cd sales.
